APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Saturday May 31, 2003 (MJD 52791) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Wimpy & Grumy a.k.a. Mike Harvanek Atsuko Nitta (guess whos is grumpy and who is wimpy) ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Science! ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- Reasonably productive night despite of the clouds and wind shifting directions (hence seeing bouncing around) 5 plate done. 1 plate with good S/N. We ran DIMM without Steph tonight. It was easy to use. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Afternoon: b2 was out of tolerance, so we refocused by moving the ring -12.2. Then all was in-focus. Night: We opened in twilight ---there are nasty clouds in the north and some clouds developing and coming towards us in the south, but for now it looks safe to open. We started up DIMM. Steph taught Mike how to set it up last night and Mike taught Atsuko how to set it up tonight. It is quite easy. Cartridge 2 Plate 1319 ------------------------- We did an fk5 to acquire the field. The offsets were small to get the fk5 centered. We might not have needed it. It is more likely that the clouds and trying to setup in twilight were the cause of us not seeing the guide stars on gotoField. We noticed that sos is reporting preCalib on this plate as plate number 0. The offset and focus entry in the log has the correct plate ID. We found out that in the fits header of the files said PLATEID=0. We used apofix on sos to fix the PLATEID and re-ran sos on those exposures. Lookig at the header of these exposures, the tileID, cartridgeID etc. are all there. Why did PLATE become 0? This was not a problem last night for this plate (this plate was observed last night as well). We had to apofix the plateID for the science and smear exposures as well. We finished this plate in one science exposure (combined with the two exposures from last night) and smear. Cartridge 6 Plate 1315 ------------------------- guide stars on gotoField. The efficiency is so good we are getting good S/N in 10min exposures. During cartChange I noticed that there is very smelly around the Ln2 shed and the cartridge bay. Something must have died close by. Cartridge 9 Plate 1322 -------------------------- guide stars on gotoField. The guider had a hard time bringng in the stras --- rotator offsets seem not to be working. We tried offsetting via SOPGUI and tcc (offset calib command), but the telescope doesn't seem to be moving. We tried offsetting in AZ and ALT using the SOPGUI but did not seem to work. So we tried gotoField again and started the guider again. We changed the scale to see if that will help. After several frames, it looks like guider images show that the guide stars are getting centered. Finally I caught up on spectroQA check... Just as we thought of switching to imaging since the weather has been good and seeing also good, the clouds reappeared in SE and NW horizon in the cloud camera.. We finished this plate in 3 exposures. Cartridge 5 Plate 1344 ------------------------- stars on gotoField. The seeing suddenly blew up to 3-4"! The wind has suddenly changed from west to east. The efficiency dropped too. Focus sweep looked like crap -- no minimum. Since we are pointing around the same part of the sky, we will keep the focus forom the previous plate. We got S/N^2 of 3-4 in 20min exposures. We did not finish this plate (the nominal observing time ended before we could finish), but got decent S/N and almost half way done. The smear was good too. We again almost switched to imaging since the sky was now photometric, but the clouds between us and El Paso is growing and moving towards us. We thought it might be here within an hour or so and decided to stick to spectro. Cartridge 4 Plate 1176 ------------------------- stars on gotoField. Seeing has improved a bit and now is less than 2.5". hHe wind is back to west --- temperature is no longer decreasing and the seeing is improving. The first science exposure requested a postCalib. We finished this plate in 3 exposures. Cartridge 1 Plate 1175 ---------------------------- start on gotoField. The seeing is getting worse again, and the wind is now from the south. Bit of clouds skirting by at the end. We finished this plate in 3 exposures. It is twilight and time to close. DIMM worked all night. endNight ran successfully. ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End Begin End Frame ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3975 00:23Z 00:39Z 100 O -36.02 -31.93 41 ignore ---=== IMAGING RUN DETAILS ===--- ---=== SKIPPY RESULTS ===--- Run Frame nFrames stars muErr muRms nuErr nuRms rot az el --------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== LTMATCH RESULTS ===--- Run Field nFields alt az nGood rowMean rowSig colMean colSig rot ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== SPECTROSCOPY DATA SUMMARY ===--- Summary Checked (y/n):y QA Procedures Done (y/n):y UT Exp Time flavor comment (S/N)^2 totals ========================================== b1 r1 b2 r2 ----- sequence 21191, plate -9999 ------- 00:11 21191 0.0 bias ----- sequence 21192, plate 1319 ------ 10.0 11.6 9.9 10.0 00:56 21192 2.1 arc 10.6 10.2 10.6 10.3 from last night 00:59 21193 2.1 arc ---------------------------- 01:16 21194 2.1 arc 20.6 21.8 20.5 20.3 01:19 21195 2.1 arc 03:19 21196 10.0 flat 03:22 21197 2.0 arc 03:42 21198 900.1 target 03:49 21199 240.0 smear ----- sequence 21200, plate 1315 ------- 17.1 18.0 15.8 18.3 04:04 21200 10.0 flat 04:06 21201 2.0 arc 04:20 21202 600.1 target 04:33 21203 600.1 target 04:46 21204 600.1 target 04:54 21205 240.0 smear ----- sequence 21206, plate 1322 ------- 18.5 19.7 15.2 19.3 05:28 21206 10.0 flat 05:31 21207 2.0 arc 05:45 21208 600.1 target 05:58 21209 600.1 target 06:16 21210 900.1 target 06:24 21211 240.0 smear ----- sequence 21212, plate 1344 ------- 8.5 8.2 7.3 6.5 06:50 21212 10.0 flat 06:52 21213 2.0 arc 07:18 21214 1200.1 target 07:40 21215 1200.1 target 07:51 21216 240.0 smear ----- sequence 21217, plate 1176 ------- 18.0 17.2 17.8 17.5 08:14 21217 10.0 flat 08:16 21218 2.0 arc 08:36 21219 900.1 target 08:49 21220 600.1 target 09:02 21221 600.1 target 09:10 21222 240.0 smear 09:13 21223 10.0 flat 09:16 21224 2.0 arc ----- sequence 21225, plate 1175 ------- 18.9 16.1 19.8 25.9 09:30 21225 10.0 flat 09:33 21226 2.0 arc 09:52 21227 900.1 target 10:10 21228 900.1 target 10:28 21229 900.1 target 10:36 21230 240.0 smear 10:39 21231 10.0 flat 10:41 21232 2.0 arc ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE I ===--- Time Instrument Az Alt Rot Scale pos offset pos offset pos offset ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 03:25Z 2 1319 174.86 0.0053 65.85 0.0027 -7.91 0.0147 1.000080 04:09Z 6 1315 203.57 0.0029 61.40 0.0036 38.80 0.0070 1.000110 05:33Z 9 1322 205.89 0.0061 62.94 0.0047 40.60 -0.0003 1.000140 06:56Z 5 1344 239.54 0.0051 54.11 0.0025 87.69 -0.0192 1.000020 08:24Z 4 1176 269.01 0.0083 76.64 0.0018 97.42 0.0168 1.000150 09:39Z 1 1175 257.92 0.0049 59.97 0.0037 98.10 -0.0052 1.000230 ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE II ===--- ---=== DATA TAPE SUMMARY ===--- Goes: JL6475 Stays: JL6476 ---=== FOCUS LOG ===--- setmir piston Temp Wind Time Inst scale M1 M2 Foc Az Alt (C) MPH Dir filt fwhm ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 00:15Z unknown 1.00020 -1974 -626 -250 121 30.0 21.3 18 220 03:25Z 2 1319 1.00008 -789 160 -325 175 65.9 16.4 12 272 gdr 1.9 04:08Z 6 1315 1.00011 -1085 -75 -325 204 61.4 16.7 8 240 gdr 1.6 05:33Z 9 1322 1.00014 -1381 -374 -375 206 62.9 16.4 4 268 gdr 1.5 06:56Z 5 1344 1.00002 -198 729 -275 240 54.2 12.6 14 75 gdr 4.0 08:24Z 4 1176 1.00015 -1480 -279 -175 269 76.6 15.1 4 267 gdr 2.0 08:40Z 4 1176 1.00015 -1480 -325 -225 267 73.3 15.1 3 266 gdr 1.9 09:38Z 1 1175 1.00023 -2270 -953 -225 258 60.0 14.2 1 154 gdr 2.6 ---=== WEATHER LOG ===--- Wind Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust DIMM Sky 23:45Z 71 32 9 235 (SW) 545 - pcl 00:18Z 71 31 15 227 (SW) 459 - " 00:50Z 65 28 13 255 (WSW) 546 - " 01:22Z 66 28 12 222 (SW) 512 - " 01:54Z 63 23 13 263 (W) 459 - " 02:27Z 62 21 11 255 (WSW) 556 - 02:57Z 62 20 10 262 (W) 689 - 03:31Z 62 16 11 263 (W) 547 - 04:03Z 62 17 9 249 (WSW) 528 - 04:34Z 61 16 2 239 (WSW) 616 - 05:05Z 61 16 9 238 (WSW) 503 - 05:36Z 61 16 2 252 (WSW) 595 - 06:08Z 60 16 2 47 (NE) 518 - 06:40Z 53 29 9 76 (ENE) 611 - 07:13Z 53 34 11 76 (ENE) 486 - 07:45Z 52 34 9 76 (ENE) 505 - 08:17Z 55 30 1 62 (ENE) 761 - 08:49Z 58 23 4 269 (W) 726 - 09:22Z 57 22 5 262 (W) 665 - 09:54Z 57 22 2 167 (SSE) 651 - 10:26Z 57 25 3 77 (ENE) 695 - 10:59Z 59 26 4 271 (W) 771 - ---=== TELESCOPE STATUS ===--- 02:15Z Enclosure open and fans on. 11:00Z Enclosure closed and fans off.
