APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Wednesday July 2, 2003 (MJD 52823) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Swing: Steph Snedden Night: Atsuko Nitta, Pete Newman Support: Howard Brewington ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Science. ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- Two plates completed (1347, 1355) under a partly cloudy sky before a thunderstorm closed us for the rest of the night. We closed in a hurry due to lightning before we could remove cartridge 1, which needs a new plate. Would the day crew please swap it for cartridge 8 when conditions allow? Thanks! ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Swing shift: ------------ Afternoon checkout went without a hitch. Even the spectrograph focus was spot on. Life is good. When we turned on the enclosure extractor fan, we found the HVAC was sounding an alarm. We did not determine the cause. Night: ------ Rain approaching from N before sunset then strong verga kept us closed until 03Z when we vented the enclosure, then opened ~20m before 18deg twilight under a partly-cloudy sky. During opening, we noted the alarm horn announcing the start of eastwards movement of the building did not sound. We also noted that the 45deg altitude fiducial did not register when slewing up. Guide stars found on gotoField unless noted otherwise. Observing sequence: 03:35Z Plate 1347, cartridge 5. Done in 3 exposures totalling 2100s. FK5 star found easily, but then clouds swamped the guide stars before we were focussed, losing ~30m after twilight. We finally got on the field about 04:15Z through thinner clouds, getting good S/N. 05:20Z Plate 1355, cartridge 1. Done in 3 exposures totalling 3000s. Heavier clouds appeared during the second exposure, which was paused for a few minutes. As we were taking postCalib exposures for this plate, there was a lightning strike within 15 miles (seen by the observers on the 2.5m pad and quite unexpected from the density of cloud shownon radar and satellite images) and more cloud rolled in rapidly from the NE, so we closed. At this point, sp2 had (S/N)^2 > 15, but sp1 only had (S/N)^2 > 13, but we used our discretion to declared the plate done. With no break in the weather, we gave up at 09:30Z. endNight completed. ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End Begin End Frame ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4035 23:41Z 23:55Z 100 O -14.90 -11.34 38 ignore ---=== IMAGING RUN DETAILS ===--- ---=== SKIPPY RESULTS ===--- Run Frame nFrames stars muErr muRms nuErr nuRms rot az el --------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== LTMATCH RESULTS ===--- Run Field nFields alt az nGood rowMean rowSig colMean colSig rot ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== SPECTROSCOPY DATA SUMMARY ===--- Summary Checked (y/n): Yes QA Procedures Done (y/n): Yes.
