APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Friday July 4, 2003 (MJD 52825) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Swing: Steph Snedden Night: Howard Brewington, Pete Newman Support: Reverend Mother Constance (by phone) Vistors: Jeff Sudol, National Solar Observatory, GONG Project David Waddill, EMC David Whalen, USTA (all former University of Wyoming astronomy graduate students) ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Science. ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- Three plates done (1178, 1395, 1404) plus more data on a Low-z program plate (1024). Odd behavior from the altitude axis noted tonight (see problems section), but not from the secondary mirror. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Swing shift: ------------ Spectrograph focus was good. No adjustments made. Pete chased thousands of moths into the great outdoors from the support building and cart shed. We have a Scott's oriole around that ought to get very fat on miller moths. The TPM indicated that the M2 positions were stable during the afternoon. The rest of checkout went without problems. Night shift: ------------ Afternoon storm clouds to the W and orographic clouds above kept us closed past sunset and 18deg twilight. We eventually opened about 04:40Z. Moon and an easterly wind dictated we start with spectroscopy. Although the sky cleared later, we repeatedly saw local clouds on the IRSC and satellite images, so did not switch to imaging. During slews to instChange, a new behaviour was noted on the altitude axis. See problem section #1 for details. Guide starts on gotoField unless noted. Observing sequence: 04:45Z Plate 1395, cartridge 5. Done in 3 exposures, 2800s. Mostly clear. 06:13Z Plate 1404, cartridge 7. Done in 3 exposures, 3100s. Variable cloud, poor seeing. 07:40Z Plate 1024, cartridge 4. Not done in 2 exposures, 2100s. The is a low-z program plate, with (S/N)^2 >= 6.9 from MJD 52819, and target (S/N)^2 >= 30. FK5 star required, but soon found. Mostly clear, but cloud seen around edges of IRSC images. We ran to the end of the design time for the plate before moving on. 08:55Z Plate 1178, cartridge 6. Done in 3 exposures, 2900s. At closing, we found the sirrobert laptop at the telescope to have hung with a dark screen, so we had to reboot it. It had been running all night in its oft-seen "cursor 1cm to right of action" state, so it needed it anyway. endNight rejoiced. ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End Begin End Frame ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4037 23:37Z 23:53Z 100 O -14.04 -9.84 42 ignore doghouse bias ---=== IMAGING RUN DETAILS ===--- ---=== SKIPPY RESULTS ===--- Run Frame nFrames stars muErr muRms nuErr nuRms rot az el --------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== LTMATCH RESULTS ===--- Run Field nFields alt az nGood rowMean rowSig colMean colSig rot ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== SPECTROSCOPY DATA SUMMARY ===--- Summary Checked (y/n): y QA Procedures Done (y/n): n UT Exp Time flavor comment (S/N)^2 totals ========================================== b1 r1 b2 r2 ----- sequence 21737, plate 1395 ------- 23:47 21737 10.0 flat 23:50 21738 2.0 arc 23:56 21739 2.1 arc 23:59 21740 2.1 arc ----- sequence 21741, plate -9999 ------- 02:00 21741 0.0 bias ----- sequence 21742, plate 1395 ------- 16.1 15.9 16.7 15.8 DONE 05:01 21742 10.0 flat 05:04 21743 2.0 arc 05:25 21744 1000.1 target 05:43 21745 900.1 target 06:01 21746 900.1 target 06:10 21747 240.0 smear ----- sequence 21748, plate 1404 ------- 17.0 18.5 20.3 22.0 DONE 06:23 21748 10.0 flat 06:26 21749 2.0 arc 06:48 21750 1000.1 target 07:08 21751 1000.1 target 07:29 21752 1100.1 target 07:37 21753 240.0 smear ----- sequence 21754, plate 1024 ------- 13.7 9.9 13.2 11.6 Not done. 07:58 21754 10.0 flat 08:01 21755 2.0 arc 08:25 21756 1200.1 target 08:44 21757 900.1 target 08:52 21758 240.0 smear ----- sequence 21759, plate 1178 ------- 16.0 15.6 17.9 20.7 DONE 09:11 21759 10.0 flat 09:13 21760 2.0 arc 09:35 21761 900.1 target 09:54 21762 900.1 target 10:15 21763 1100.1 target 10:23 21764 240.0 smear ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE I ===--- Time Instrument Az Alt Rot Scale pos offset pos offset pos offset ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 05:13Z 5 1395 240.09 0.0061 58.20 0.0029 84.32 -0.0165 1.000110 (Cartridge 7, plate 1404 not noted, but guide stars found on gotoField) 08:18Z 4 1024 23.51 0.0021 54.89 0.0016 199.52 0.0082 1.000010 09:40Z 6 1178 6.51 0.0030 49.13 0.0031 185.44 -0.0045 1.000480 ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE II ===--- ---=== DATA TAPE SUMMARY ===--- Goes: JL6629 Stays: JL6630 ---=== FOCUS LOG ===--- setmir piston Temp Wind Time Inst scale M1 M2 Foc Az Alt (C) MPH Dir filt fwhm ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 05:12Z 5 1395 1.00011 -1085 58 -200 240 58.2 16.1 10 83 BG38 2.0 (Cart 7, plate 4 - not recorded. Positions: sp1: sp2: A=+242 +507 B=+442 +491 C=-658 +492 Problem 1 - Altitude axis hunting at alt=90deg ---------------------------------------------- When I am on cartridge change duty, I (Pete) routinely watch the altitude axis quadrant to determine when the altitude slew to 90deg is completed, so that I can engage the locking pin. In fact, I rest my fingers on the quadrant for the last degree or so to _feel_ when the slew has ended. Tonight, during the changes between cartridges 5 -> 7 and 7 -> 4, I saw and felt the altitude position hunt for several oscillations before settling. I judge that the outer radius of the drive quadrant moved about 2-3 mm peak-to-peak. I have never noticed this behaviour before (on several hundred? changes) so I think it is new. I checked for similar behaviour on completion of the slew to the next field, and no hunting was noted, nor did we see any indications of this during observations. PR 5460 opened on 2_5m-servo. On the next cartridge change, 4 -> 6, the axis stopped smoothly without oscillation.
