APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Tuesday August 19, 2003 (MJD 52871) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Night: Howard Brewington Dan Long ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Shake! ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- Pointing model PR 4381 Imager Tests PLC Tests M1 temp problems ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Pointing Model -------------- We opened at twilight; there were scattered clouds in the area. We started with the pointing model, but spent a good deal of time setting-up the new engineering camera. It now has an instrument block named "big engcam." After we started collecting the pointing model data, we got about sixty exposures done before clouds caused us to close at 05:40Z. The pointing model was resumed, however, at 06:45Z after the clouds dissipated. This pointing model was successful and applied, having a sky rms of 1.5 arcseconds. The verification pass was not successful because of a tracking error too large to correct in Az, which went unnoticed. The error was over 3300, but a slip was not realized. We had to pause our next verification attempt to clean the telescope's drive surfaces. After we completed the pointing model, we had a standard deviation (RMS) of 2.8" fitting the data set we just took against the earlier applied model. PR 4381 (LN2 pressure readings) -------------------------------- We verified that the TPM does display pressure readings and that these readings are being archived. We also compared the readings displayed via the TPM with the gauges on the 180L LN2 dewars; the readings are comparable. However, we noticed that sometimes the readings in the TPM display seem to fluctuate (rise and fall) over a few seconds of time; whereas, the readings on the dewars' gauges do not. The range of the bounce can be as much as seven to eight psi. Consequently, we did not close this PR. IMAGER Work/Tests ------------------- From run# 4062 (frame 25) of last night's data, we did a checkBias and checkFlat. The outcome was stored/compressed on phoenix in file 52870. We had no problems with this procedure. However, there was one complaint from each check, but on different chips. checkFlat seems to have a problem with the default output directory. It complained that it doesn't exist unless you specify it. im> checkBias 4062 25 . {85 WARN: } {85 FAIL: leftRNComp } im> checkFlat 4066 25 . -outputDir . {42 WARN: leftGain } {42 FAIL: } A look at the vector plots didn't show anything particularly odd about the two chips for which there were complaints, at least to my untrained eye. We also tried the "cc check" and the ION_PUMP_PR via "cc imstat." They also worked well. PLC tests -------------- We tested the slithead doors and latches via the Latch Control Box, MCP, and IOP's instChange. And, we verified that the doors and latches were in the right state every time and that all agree with which state they are in. Problem -------- Watcher complained all night about M1's temp (see problems section). ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End Begin End Frame ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4067 23:16Z 23:36Z 100 O 26.12 31.26 48 ignore 4068 04:50Z 05:09Z 100 O 109.97 114.60 43 bias ---=== IMAGING RUN DETAILS ===--- ---=== SKIPPY RESULTS ===--- Run Frame nFrames stars muErr muRms nuErr nuRms rot az el --------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== LTMATCH RESULTS ===--- Run Field nFields alt az nGood rowMean rowSig colMean colSig rot ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== SPECTROSCOPY DATA SUMMARY ===--- Summary Checked (y/n): QA Procedures Done (y/n): UT Exp Time flavor comment (S/N)^2 totals ========================================== b1 r1 b2 r2 ----- sequence 21994, plate -9999 ------- 22:58 21994 0.0 bias 23:18 21995 0.0 bias ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE I ===--- Time Instrument Az Alt Rot Scale pos offset pos offset pos offset ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE II ===--- ---=== DATA TAPE SUMMARY ===--- Goes: JL cloudy Stays: JL cloudy ---=== FOCUS LOG ===--- setmir piston Temp Wind Time Inst scale M1 M2 Foc Az Alt (C) MPH Dir filt fwhm ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== WEATHER LOG ===--- Wind Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust DIMM Sky 22:45Z 60 43 15 141 (SE) 1254 - scattered clouds 23:16Z 60 42 11 122 (ESE) 1078 - scattered clouds 23:47Z 56 47 12 84 (E) 914 - scattered clouds 00:21Z 64 39 11 129 (SE) 1185 - scattered clouds 00:53Z 65 39 7 152 (SSE) 1499 - scattered clouds 01:29Z 64 36 7 164 (SSE) 1694 - scattered clouds 02:02Z 63 37 13 124 (SE) 1482 - scattered clouds 02:34Z 62 41 10 118 (ESE) 1119 - scattered clouds 03:10Z 63 41 7 153 (SSE) 1305 - scattered clouds 03:42Z 62 42 1 28 (NNE) 990 - scattered clouds 04:15Z 61 42 2 91 (E) 1107 - scattered clouds 04:47Z 62 41 4 169 (S) 1752 - clouds 05:23Z 61 41 4 156 (SSE) 1509 - clouds 05:59Z 61 42 9 170 (S) 1645 - clouds 06:36Z 61 42 10 183 (S) 1092 - scattered clouds 07:12Z 61 42 5 198 (SSW) 1059 - scattered clouds 07:44Z 60 42 7 189 (S) 797 - scattered clouds 08:16Z 59 41 5 180 (S) 876 - scattered clouds 08:49Z 59 41 5 186 (S) 850 - scattered clouds 09:21Z 59 42 9 190 (S) 811 - scattered clouds 09:53Z 58 42 5 180 (S) 1033 - scattered clouds 10:25Z 58 42 2 99 (E) 892 - scattered clouds 10:58Z 59 42 2 114 (ESE) 982 - scattered clouds 11:38Z 59 42 5 138 (SE) 1042 - ---=== TELESCOPE STATUS ===--- 01:04Z Fans on, doors open. 02:10Z Enclosure off 05:40Z Enclosure on 06:40Z Enclosure off 11:30Z Enclosure on, fans off Status at 11:50Z: Telescope stowed at: 121,30,00 deg Instrument mounted: Engcam Counterweights at: 150 Autofill systems: On 180L LN2 dewar scales: Spectro 259 lb, 26 psi Imager 53 lb, 21 psi No interlocks are bypassed. ---=== SOFTWARE USED ===--- IOP/SOP: v3_118_0 Watcher: v2_24_0 MCP: v5_20_0 TPM: tpm_v2_30_0 AstroDa: v14_47 TCC: TCC 2.7.1 July 22 2003 sdssProcedures: v1_73 SoS: v4_9_13 hoggPT: v1_6_9 plate-mapper: v4_3_1 ---=== MIRROR NUMBERS ===--- PRIMARY: -------- Scale: 1.000000 MIGS TONIGHT NOMINAL Axial A 0.0960 0.0790 Axial B 0.8160 0.7970 Axial C 0.8210 0.8240 Trans D -9.1010 -9.0560 Lateral E 1.8570 1.8870 Lateral F 0.0000 1.4300 GALILS Commanded: 5400. -3700. 900. -200. 31550. 30650.
