APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Tuesday September 23, 2003 (MJD 52906) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Jurek Krzesinski and Howard Brewington also staring: French Herculis. ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Science! ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- First two hours of the night lost due to a problem with oscillating secondary and slips in az and alt (moths). The rest of the night we stayed closed due to high humidity. See the log for details. No science were done tonight. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Afternoon checkout: French and his crew were working today on piezo electric boards (nothing serious, they were just checking the boards, then mounted them back). When we came on our shift and checked mirror status we found out that some of secondary mirror axies were not homed. So we homed the mirror. Everything went back to spec (migs were fine). Spectrographs in foucs - no corrections were made. Night: ------ Looks like we can open - nice clear sky with clouds aroud the horizon. So we did and French checked if the wind buffle is doing well why slewing the telescope - there was no problem with the wind buffle. 01:45Z We got mirror oscilations on setting up on the sky. The secondary was homed again. But the collimation process didn't go properly the mirror was oscilating too much and we got an error message: :A=0 :B=0 :C=0 :XQ#HOME : 0363.1, 0363.1, 0363.1, 0000.0, 0000.0 max sec to find reverse limit switch Reverse limit switch not depressed for axes: 1, 1, 1, 0, 0 - trying again 0363.1, 0000.6, 0000.6, 0000.0, 0000.0 max sec to find reverse limit switch ?GORLIM one or more axes did not hit reverse limit: 0, 1, 1, 0, 0 OK Homing again resulted in the same error. We moved the telescope to 6 degrees, so French could touch things at the telescope. But when we got there the oscillations went away and we were able to move the mirror back to normal operation. Meanwhile clouds started to show up. On slewing to the field we got slip in az. Then again secondary mirror oscilation (02:17Z). French decided to reboot the piezo board, but trying to move the telescope down to 6 degrees we got slip in alt - we had to bypass it to clean drives off moths. After rebooting the board, we had to refiducialize axies in az and alt to be able to see stars. Fortunately after that, stars were on slew. 02:55Z cart 2 plt 1424 - stars on slew, well since we lost time for fixing the mirror and axies problems, plate expired. We started however with calibration, but 03:10Z dew point dropped below 3.0 we run to close both 2.5m and PT telescope. Going to stow position we got another slip detection in az, so we reset it and closed the telescope with out problems. Humidity stayed high all the rest of the night. No science exposure were taken. 10:44Z We run endnight. ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End Begin End Frame ------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== IMAGING RUN DETAILS ===--- ---=== SKIPPY RESULTS ===--- Run Frame nFrames stars muErr muRms nuErr nuRms rot az el --------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== LTMATCH RESULTS ===--- Run Field nFields alt az nGood rowMean rowSig colMean colSig rot ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== SPECTROSCOPY DATA SUMMARY ===--- Summary Checked (y/n): yes QA Procedures Done (y/n): no science taken.
