APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Wednesday September 24, 2003 (MJD 52907) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Night: Howard Brewington Atsuko Nitta ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Science! ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- We got some data on two plates (1424 and 1473) before we had to close due to rain/clouds/high humidity. We never reopened. We had one M2 oscillation at the beginning of the night. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Spectro focus was inspec when chekced in the afternoon. No adjustments made. 01:15Z Opened. Maybe we will get something useful for the science plate. Start with Cart 2 Plate 1424: 02:40Z Going to FK5 since we were not sure we can find the guide stars easily with the clouds above. The M2 started to oscillate. We moved the M2 to ALT=70 degrees to home the mirror. During the second homing, the TCC complained that the M2 did not get to the limit and repeated command to home did not complete successfully. We slewed the telescope to 45deg and that stopped the oscillation. We moved the telescope back to 70deg to rehome. If it were not in twilight, we would have unplugged the piezos.... We moved back to 70deg, finished the second homing and went back to field. 02:17Z Back to fk5 which we easily found. 02:57Z The guider seems to sometimes hang. The guider will be taking exposures and then will stop. We had to keep stopping and restarting the guider. It turns out that the TCC is confused in that it responding to about two commands behind the most recent command. This seems to cause the "bad reply" message in the TCC scrolling display. Craig helped us sort this out. The trick is to connect to the controller from the tcc and read out the extra junk: "TALK TCC_GCAM", followed by some newlines. Why did this happen? "No idea" says Craig. We were not able to finish this plate. The last exposure did not make the min. S/N^2 due to clouds and the plate going out of optimal observing time. Our not having the guidre to behave as usual probably did not help either. 03:49Z Cart 9 Plate 1473 We had to clear offsets to get the field. We also had too large to correct AZ fiducial corrections which had to be cleared before acquiring the field. 04:30Z We stopped the guider. The clouds thickened. After reading out the second science exposure, we wait for the clouds to go away before resuming. We cannot even see Mars. 04:40Z Closed. The rain sensor went off. Only few sprinkles came down without warning. Thank you Pete for helping us. While we wait, the humidity rose up to closure condition too. Then it started to rain. 11:00Z We give up and put telescope to bed. endNight rejoiced. ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End Begin End Frame ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4125 22:31Z 23:03Z 100 O 50.36 58.44 64 ignore ---=== IMAGING RUN DETAILS ===--- ---=== SKIPPY RESULTS ===--- Run Frame nFrames stars muErr muRms nuErr nuRms rot az el --------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== LTMATCH RESULTS ===--- Run Field nFields alt az nGood rowMean rowSig colMean colSig rot ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== SPECTROSCOPY DATA SUMMARY ===--- Summary Checked (y/n):y QA Procedures Done (y/n):y UT Exp Time flavor comment (S/N)^2 totals ========================================== b1 r1 b2 r2 ----- sequence 22421, plate -9999 ------- 22:33 22421 0.0 bias ----- sequence 22422, plate 1424 ------- 11.7 13.1 12.7 13.2 23:20 22422 10.0 flat 23:22 22423 2.0 arc 23:27 22424 2.1 arc 23:29 22425 2.1 arc 02:27 22426 10.0 flat 02:30 22427 2.0 arc 02:44 22428 600.1 target 03:01 22429 900.1 target 03:16 22430 720.1 target 03:24 22431 240.0 smear ----- sequence 22432, plate 1473 ------- 10.6 10.9 11.0 9.6 03:48 22432 10.0 flat 03:51 22433 2.0 arc 04:11 22434 900.1 target 04:29 22435 900.1 target ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE I ===--- Time Instrument Az Alt Rot Scale pos offset pos offset pos offset ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 11:15Z 9 1479 121.00 0.0036 30.00 -0.0005 0.00 0.0061 1.000140 ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE II ===--- ---=== DATA TAPE SUMMARY ===--- Goes: JL6732 Stays: JL6733 ---=== FOCUS LOG ===--- setmir piston Temp Wind Time Inst scale M1 M2 Foc Az Alt (C) MPH Dir filt fwhm ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 02:35Z 1424 1.00006 -593 738 50 -88 50.7 13.0 6 176 1.9 04:05Z 1473 1.00014 -1383 68 50 16 56.1 12.2 4 142 2.0 ---=== WEATHER LOG ===--- Wind Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust DIMM Sky 22:14Z 55 43 13 76 (ENE) 247 - 22:47Z 56 44 13 93 (E) 181 - 23:19Z 58 43 8 88 (E) 192 - 23:51Z 58 40 6 122 (ESE) 191 - 00:20Z 57 41 1 176 (S) 190 - 00:52Z 56 42 6 172 (S) 258 - 01:25Z 55 43 9 122 (ESE) 284 - 01:58Z 56 39 9 115 (ESE) 176 - 02:29Z 56 39 9 134 (SE) 265 - 02:59Z 55 41 7 180 (S) 290 - 03:29Z 55 42 6 178 (S) 362 - 04:00Z 53 42 1 179 (S) 338 - 04:34Z 53 41 16 76 (ENE) 391 - 05:06Z 51 39 20 65 (ENE) 1542 - 05:38Z 51 40 20 73 (ENE) 1751 - 06:10Z 49 43 26 73 (ENE) 1258 - 06:42Z 49 46 20 82 (E) 595 - 07:15Z 49 46 18 74 (ENE) 420 - 07:47Z 49 46 18 74 (ENE) 414 - 08:19Z 50 46 14 89 (E) 333 - 08:51Z 52 43 12 82 (E) 326 - 09:23Z 53 41 4 108 (ESE) 212 - 09:56Z 52 43 6 142 (SE) 278 - 10:28Z 51 41 6 109 (ESE) 215 - 11:01Z 50 42 11 137 (SE) 269 - ---=== TELESCOPE STATUS ===--- 01:00Z Doors opened, fans on. 01:15Z Enclosure off. 04:40Z Enclosure on, doors closed. 11:00Z Telescope put to bed.
