APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Saturday October 18, 2003 (MJD 52931) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Mike Harvanek Pete Newman Steph Snedden (swing) ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Science! ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- Imaging: 82 S from lambda 126 to -165. Spectro: Finished 2 plates (1514, 1259) and good data for another one (1492). We did not see any fiducial errors too large to correct so it looks like cleaning the read head solved the problem. Thanks. We got an altitude servo oscillation on closing tonight. See the Problems section for details. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Afternoon: ---------- There appears to be a bug in the new idlspec2d (v4_10_6). See the Problems section for details. The XMIN on sp1 was tweaked 2 pixels in the positive direction. Night: ------ We started with imaging of 82 S. Ramp started at frame 12, lambda 123. Science started at frame 32, lambda 126. Science ended at frame 494, lambda -165. Ramp ended at frame 513, lambda -162. The moon rose around 0645Z and we switched to spectroscopy. Plate 1492 (cartridge 7): After clearing previous offsets, an FK5 star was found on the gotoField. We obtained one 900 s exposure before this plate expired. Plate 1514 (cartridge 4): Guide stars on the gotoField. Although this plate was done in 3 exposures, there were no other plates available at this time. So, 2 additional exposures were obtained while waiting for another plate to become available. Five total exposures (4491 s) gave more than double the required s/n. Note that the 2nd exposure is 891 s. This is because an endStare was mistakenly issued. Plate 1259 (cartridge 1): Guide stars on the gotoField. A large scale change lost the stars and an fk5 was needed to acquire the field again. The guide stars on this plate appeared to be several magnitudes fainter (on the guider) than typical guide stars. SoS refused to reduce most of the data from b1 because there were not enough sky fibers (see the Problems section for details). We had this same problem with r1 on another Taurus plate (1250) on MJD 52929. Although this plate (1259) was done in 3 exposures, the only other plate available at this time was awash in moonlight and twilight was approaching. Thus, we would not have been able to obtain useful data for it and so we took a 4th exposure on this plate. The four exposures totaled 3600 s. SoS did reduce b1 on the 4th exposure and we were able to call this plate done. A smear was taken for this plate because there was some concern that special plates may require one even though survey plates do not. No fiducial errors too large to correct were seen tonight so it appears that the cleaning of the read head solved the problem. The manipulator arm would not slide along its rail when closing. The arm was up against its east end. Manually pushing it several inches to the west away from the end solved the problem. PR 5714 was filed. We had an altitude servo oscillation on closing. See the Problems section for details. endNight is still running. ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End Begin End Frame MJD 52931, about 12:00Z (i.e. 6am MDT). The telescope was slewed to (121, 6, 0) mount, cartridge 2 was on, CW=280, spectro secondaries in need of a fill (they autofilled on being hooked up a few minutes later). As the telescope came to a stop at 6deg, there was a clear ~4Hz oscillation with about 4mm P-P amplitude at the edge of the alt drive disk. Commanding the TCC to 'axis stop' had no effect. Telling the MCP to 'stop' the drive did (and aborted the amp). We had no observational evidence of problems during the night (no bad images, no fiducual errors too large for correction), but were not otherwise closely monitoring the encoders. The next 'axis init' and slew to (121, 30, 0) did not reproduce the problem. That's were we left it stowed. When I went downstairs to power-down the amps, there were a hell of a lot of moths on and in the amp housing, so I think they are seeking warm places now. I laid a hand on each amp backplate; all were warm, but none seemed excessively so. See also, existing PR 5460.
