APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Friday March 26, 2004 (MJD 53091) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Howard Brewington Steph Snedden Support: French Leger (on-site to check for LED light leaks) Dave Woods (by phone) ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Science! ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- Mostly dust and high wind with a smidgen of science. One plate (1464) finished. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Swing: ----- During afternoon checkout, we noted that one of the neon lamps is somewhat misaligned. If you are at the back of the telescope facing the illuminated petal surfaces, it is the lamp that illuminates the upper right quadrant. The lamp is tilted so that there is no illumination at the outer edge of that quadrant. This could explain the lower values for BESTCORR and NLAMPS for r2 in SoS. French was notified, and the lamps will all be aligned. A PR was filed. Night: ----- We delayed opening because of a combination of moon-illuminated clouds and rising dust counts. We had to be cautious about the dust counts. The counter mounted at the PT worked for a brief time during the afternoon, and was reading approx. 500 particles/0.1ft^3 above the 3.5-m counter (this was while the 3.5-m was ventilating, so should be comparable). The PT particle counter stopped working at the end of the afternoon. We called Dave Woods to see if there was a spare portable unit somewhere. He pointed us to a unit that occasionally works. We also tried power-cycling the unit at the PT. We could hear it drawing air, but no values showed up on the weather page. Perhaps this is a communications issue, Craig? We filed a site PR. 02:26Z Dust counts climb to the 3000 particles/0.1ft^3 limit based on the portable unit and the 3.5-m unit. We close the doors and turn off ventilation. Portable particle counter readings: (read at 2.5-m enclosure apron) 02:49Z 3981 particles/01.ft^3. 03:02Z 4224 " " 03:30Z 3578 " " 04:02Z 2000 " " 04:32Z 1712 " " 04:55Z 2000 " " 05:12Z 1750 " " lower counts, but high wind 05:36Z 1887 " " 06:07Z 2000 " " 06:35Z 2764 " " 07:11Z 2800 " " 07:31Z 2234 " " 08:13Z 2000 " " 08:36Z 1722 " " 09:04Z 1850 " " After opening... 10:18Z 1553 " " 11:25Z 1415 " " 09:32Z Finally, the dust and wind let us open. The seeing is poor, but there is not enough time for Apache Wheel, so we go with spectroscopy. 09:46Z Cartridge 9, plate 1464 Guide stars on gotoField. Finished with a total exposure of 3000 s. 11:27Z Cartridge 2, plate 1385 Needed an FK5 to find the field. One exposure of 720 s, but WSIGMA went out of spec, so it isn't useful. It was declared bad in SoS. DIMM: DIMM was never opened because of bad weather, but note that the DIMM computer did not reboot itself today. It looks likely that the cause of the reboots is the VNC server. The VNC server was shut down at the end of last night. ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End Begin End Frame ------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== IMAGING RUN DETAILS ===--- ---=== SKIPPY RESULTS ===--- Run Frame nFrames stars muErr muRms nuErr nuRms rot az el --------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== LTMATCH RESULTS ===--- Run Field nFields alt az nGood rowMean rowSig colMean colSig rot ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== SPECTROSCOPY DATA SUMMARY ===--- Summary Checked (y/n):y QA Procedures Done (y/n):y UT Exp Time flavor comment (S/N)^2 totals ========================================== b1 r1 b2 r2 ----- sequence 25889, plate 1382 ------- 00:34 25889 10.0 flat 00:36 25890 2.0 arc ----- sequence 25891, plate 1464 ------- 10:11 25891 10.0 flat 10:14 25892 2.0 arc 10:38 25893 1200.1 target 10:56 25894 900.1 target 11:15 25895 900.1 target 11:17 25896 10.0 flat 11:20 25897 2.0 arc ----- sequence 25898, plate 1385 ------- 11:48 25898 720.1 target 11:51 25899 10.0 flat 11:54 25900 2.0 arc ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE I ===--- Time Instrument Az Alt Rot Scale pos offset pos offset pos offset ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 10:19Z 9 1464 242.83 0.0028 64.26 0.0080 81.48 0.0101 1.000650 11:38Z 2 1385 259.21 0.0017 67.74 0.0045 94.01 0.0160 1.000080 ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE II ===--- ---=== DATA TAPE SUMMARY ===--- Goes: JL7362 Stays: JL7363 ---=== FOCUS LOG ===--- setmir piston Temp Wind Time Inst scale M1 M2 Foc Az Alt (C) MPH Dir filt fwhm ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 10:19Z 9 1464 1.00065 -6417 -3471 700 243 64.3 3.9 14 267 - 1.9 11:38Z 2 1385 1.00008 -790 806 325 259 67.8 3.1 9 283 - 2.0 ---=== WEATHER LOG ===--- Wind Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust DIMM Sky 00:29Z 53 17 25 228 (SW) 1353 - mcloudy 01:01Z 51 16 21 220 (SW) 1430 - " 01:31Z 49 16 15 219 (SW) 0 - " 02:01Z 49 14 18 209 (SSW) 0 - pcl 02:31Z 50 12 18 220 (SW) 0 - " 03:02Z 49 10 15 221 (SW) 0 - " 03:32Z 49 11 14 254 (WSW) 0 - " 04:02Z 48 10 22 237 (WSW) 0 - " 04:32Z 47 11 21 227 (SW) 0 - " 05:02Z 47 11 20 247 (WSW) 0 - " 05:33Z 46 12 27 252 (WSW) 0 - mclear 06:03Z 45 12 17 267 (W) 0 - " 06:33Z 44 12 15 274 (W) 0 - " 07:03Z 43 13 14 267 (W) 0 - clear 07:33Z 42 14 16 269 (W) 0 - " 08:04Z 42 16 7 279 (W) 0 - " 08:34Z 41 17 21 269 (W) 0 - " 09:04Z 40 15 22 285 (WNW) 0 - " 09:36Z 40 14 13 269 (W) 0 - " 10:08Z 39 16 14 264 (W) 0 - " 10:39Z 38 17 11 269 (W) 0 - " 11:10Z 37 15 10 274 (W) 0 - " 11:41Z 37 16 7 285 (WNW) 0 - " 12:13Z 36 15 13 302 (WNW) 0 - " ---=== TELESCOPE STATUS ===--- 00:50Z Doors open, fans & blowers on. 02:25Z Doors closed. fans & blowers off. 09:30Z Enclosure opened.
