APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Saturday June 5, 2004 (MJD 53162) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Atsuko Nitta Support: Steve Bastian ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Spectro monthly checkout ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- Spectro monthly checkout completed without any problem. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Upon arrival I turned on the lava lamp and asked the Qball if the spectro monthly checkout will go smoothly. Qball replied "the stars say yes". :) 01:57Z After checking the spectro did a fill at 23:00Z, I moved it to 121,30,45 for the spectro monthly checkout. At thie time, the enclosure is 16C and dropping. Looking at the plot of tpm_TM_TelairAvg.VALA, the AC seems to turned on around 11 AM APO time when it peaked at 19C -- is this correct? The night time temperature at APO for the past few nights has been around 60F or around 15C. PMSS and enclosure air reports the following: tpm_TM_PMSSAvg 17.0086 tpm_TM_TelairAvg.VALA 15.835 which I decided is close enough to the night time air temp and proceeded with the spectro monthly checkout. Note that the dust was too high for me to ventilate at this time and the air temp outside was around 19C. Motor numbers at the beginning of the night: ------------------------------------------------- sp1 Coll_motor_A 0 Coll_motor_B 0 Coll_motor_C 0 sp2 Coll_motor_A 3 Coll_motor_B -1 Coll_motor_C 0 02:38Z Steve came in to change the dewar and check on the set screws on the FF petals. My dinner became just ready so I ate while waiting for Steve to do his work. Checking Xmin,Xmax ====================== Flat exposure showed r2 XMAX in red and NGOODFIBER in yellow. sp2 Coll_motor_A 1700 Coll_motor_B 1698 Coll_motor_C -1701 03:27Z Steve gave me back the telescope to me. Thank you Steve for taking care of the dewars. The above move made sp2 in spec. Checking Wavelength coverage =============================== The WAVEMAX values for both b2 and r2 are in red. sp2> mechMoveColl 6000 -6000 0 sp2 after moving 6000 steps Coll_motor_A 7700 Coll_motor_B -4300 Coll_motor_C -1701 Opps. This was too much. Now WAVEMIN values are in red. mechMoveColl -4000 4000 0 sp2 Coll_motor_A 3700 Coll_motor_B -301 Coll_motor_C -1701 Ack. sp2's WAVEMAX values are back in red. :( :( sp2> mechMoveColl 2200 -2200 0 sp2 Coll_motor_A 5900 Coll_motor_B -2501 Coll_motor_C -1701 sp2's WAVEMIN values are in yellow. I am getting there.... sp2> mechMoveColl -1000 1000 0 sp2 Coll_motor_A 4900 Coll_motor_B -1501 Coll_motor_C -1701 Yeahh! SoS is happy now. Let's check the XMIN, XMAX just to make sure we are still in spec in positin as well. Yes all is well indeed. Focus check ==================== I forgot to turn off the FF lamp after taking the flat. So I took two sets goSpecFocus sequence. sp1 r1 is slightly out of tolerance. sp2 is not, but I will refine it since I will have to rerun goSpecFocus after I change sp1 motor positions. sp1> mechPiston 2959 sp1 Coll_motor_A 2959 Coll_motor_B 2959 Coll_motor_C 2958 sp2> mechPiston 1872 sp2 Coll_motor_A 6772 Coll_motor_B 370 Coll_motor_C 172 The above movement made both sp1 and sp2 to be in focus. Dithered flats ================= Successfully took 7 flats and 2 arc frames. The motor positions returned to where they should be after taking all exposures. 25 Bias frames ================= Visual inspection of frame 27034 did not show anything unusual. apo_plotbias reported: Filename 02% 05% 10% 50% 90% 95% 98% ------------------- ------ ------ ------ ------ ------ ------ ------ sdR-b1-00027034.fit -5.9 -4.2 -3.1 2.0 7.6 9.3 11.0 sdR-b1-00027034.fit -5.9 -4.2 -3.1 2.0 7.6 9.3 11.0 sdR-b2-00027034.fit -8.5 -6.6 -5.3 1.3 7.3 9.2 11.3 sdR-b2-00027034.fit -8.5 -6.6 -5.3 1.3 7.3 9.2 11.3 sdR-r1-00027034.fit -7.4 -5.1 -3.9 1.1 7.1 8.7 10.1 sdR-r1-00027034.fit -7.4 -5.1 -3.9 1.1 7.1 8.7 10.1 sdR-r2-00027034.fit -9.7 -6.7 -4.7 1.1 6.3 8.4 11.6 sdR-r2-00027034.fit -9.7 -6.7 -4.7 1.1 6.3 8.4 11.6 Plot is saved in the our Spectro Monthly Checkout folder as usual. 3 Dark exposures =================== Visual inspectin of frame 27059 did not show anything unusual. The only difference between biases seem to be the number of cosmi rays. apo_plotbias showed higher number of pixels with 2-4ADU counts than the bias showed and reported: Filename 02% 05% 10% 50% 90% 95% 98% ------------------- ------ ------ ------ ------ ------ ------ ------ sdR-b1-00027059.fit -3.0 -1.5 0.4 7.2 13.1 15.1 17.7 sdR-b1-00027059.fit -3.0 -1.5 0.4 7.2 13.1 15.1 17.7 sdR-b2-00027059.fit -5.3 -2.6 -1.3 5.3 13.2 14.5 18.5 sdR-b2-00027059.fit -5.3 -2.6 -1.3 5.3 13.2 14.5 18.5 sdR-r1-00027059.fit -5.4 -3.1 -0.8 5.0 11.5 13.5 16.5 sdR-r1-00027059.fit -5.4 -3.1 -0.8 5.0 11.5 13.5 16.5 sdR-r2-00027059.fit -6.8 -3.8 -2.4 4.2 11.2 13.2 17.2 sdR-r2-00027059.fit -6.8 -3.8 -2.4 4.2 11.2 13.2 17.2 Plot is saved in our Spectro Monthly Checkout folder as usual. All exposures except for the biases and darks are called test. Since the dust was high tonight, I never opened or turned on the fans. The enclosre temperature was kept from 15-16C and the outside temperature ranged from 19C at sunset to 15C by the time I finished the last dark exposure. Done with spectro checkout! I will leave the telescope with cartridge mounted. I will mount the engCam tomorrow afternoon since it is 09:00Z and I want to go home before twilight starts. ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End Begin End Frame ------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== IMAGING RUN DETAILS ===--- ---=== SKIPPY RESULTS ===--- Run Frame nFrames stars muErr muRms nuErr nuRms rot az el --------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== LTMATCH RESULTS ===--- Run Field nFields alt az nGood rowMean rowSig colMean colSig rot ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== SPECTROSCOPY DATA SUMMARY ===--- Summary Checked (y/n):y QA Procedures Done (y/n): UT Exp Time flavor comment (S/N)^2 totals ========================================== b1 r1 b2 r2 ----- sequence 27010, plate -9999 ------- 01:47 27010 0.0 bias ----- sequence 27011, plate 1615 ------- 02:33 27011 10.0 flat CCD positon check 03:25 27012 10.0 flat " 03:36 27013 2.0 arc Wavelength coverage check 04:02 27014 2.0 arc " 04:18 27015 2.0 arc " 04:38 27016 2.0 arc " 04:52 27017 2.0 arc " 05:02 27018 10.0 flat CCD position check 05:10 27019 2.1 arc collimation check 05:12 27020 2.1 arc " 05:18 27021 2.1 arc " 05:21 27022 2.1 arc " 05:32 27023 2.1 arc " 05:35 27024 2.1 arc " 05:45 27025 10.0 flat Dithered flats 05:49 27026 10.0 flat " 05:53 27027 10.0 flat " 05:57 27028 10.0 flat " 06:01 27029 10.0 flat " 06:05 27030 10.0 flat " 06:08 27031 10.0 flat " 06:12 27032 2.0 arc " 06:15 27033 2.0 arc " 06:19 27034 0.0 bias Bias series starts here 06:21 27035 0.0 bias 06:23 27036 0.0 bias 06:26 27037 0.0 bias 06:28 27038 0.0 bias 06:30 27039 0.0 bias 06:32 27040 0.0 bias 06:34 27041 0.0 bias 06:36 27042 0.0 bias 06:38 27043 0.0 bias 06:40 27044 0.0 bias 06:42 27045 0.0 bias 06:45 27046 0.0 bias 06:47 27047 0.0 bias 06:49 27048 0.0 bias 06:51 27049 0.0 bias 06:53 27050 0.0 bias 06:55 27051 0.0 bias 06:57 27052 0.0 bias 06:59 27053 0.0 bias 07:01 27054 0.0 bias 07:03 27055 0.0 bias 07:05 27056 0.0 bias 07:08 27057 0.0 bias 07:10 27058 0.0 bias 07:55 27059 0.0 dark Dark series starts here. 08:18 27060 0.0 dark 08:36 27061 0.0 dark ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE I ===--- Time Instrument Az Alt Rot Scale pos offset pos offset pos offset ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE II ===--- ---=== DATA TAPE SUMMARY ===--- Goes: JL Stays: JL ---=== FOCUS LOG ===--- setmir piston Temp Wind Time Inst scale M1 M2 Foc Az Alt (C) MPH Dir filt fwhm ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== WEATHER LOG ===--- Wind Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust DIMM Sky 00:04Z 74 27 13 266 (W) 4314 - 00:36Z 70 25 6 316 (NW) 3892 - 01:08Z 70 26 10 268 (W) 3752 - 01:40Z 68 25 6 251 (WSW) 3742 - 02:12Z 65 24 2 194 (SSW) 3391 - 02:45Z 65 24 4 188 (S) 3278 - 03:17Z 66 24 6 215 (SW) 2852 - 03:48Z 64 24 5 182 (S) 2677 - 04:20Z 63 23 7 191 (S) 2664 - 04:53Z 62 24 13 154 (SSE) 2809 - 05:24Z 62 27 14 153 (SSE) 3334 - 05:58Z 62 27 15 151 (SSE) 3348 - 06:30Z 60 28 11 150 (SSE) 3735 - 07:02Z 60 27 18 148 (SSE) 3475 - 07:34Z 59 30 17 172 (S) 6436 - 08:07Z 59 31 18 174 (S) 8031 - 08:39Z 59 31 15 166 (SSE) 9081 - ---=== TELESCOPE STATUS ===--- Telescope at stow with cart 5 mounted and spectro auto-fill connected.
