APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Thursday June 10, 2004 (MJD 53167) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Atsuko Nitta (swing) John Barentine Mike Harvanek ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Science! ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- Dust delayed opening. Photometric but seeing varied between 1.5 and 2.0" so we did spectroscopy. Finished 2 plates (1423, 1821). Good signal on 2 other plates (1680, 1569). ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Afternoon ========= There was a backup take in the gang1 drive when I arrived this afternoon. But the drive had the "operate with handle" light on. And the system operator running the backup job has been idle for over an hour. So I put the backup tape out of the drive and it is sitting on the table. I then found the gang1 tape was in the PT drive and PT tape was on the table. If Jurek was around, I would have suspected him doing this to confuse me. Note that the collimation check was done with the enclosure temp at 14C (the outside temp at this time was 17C) and at 121,30,45. sp2 red camera had Mean offset = 0.30 pix, right at the edge of the allowable tolerance. So I moved the motors. Detail numbers in the PROBLEM section. sp1 did not need any adjustments. Everything else checked out fine. Night ===== High dust at sunset. Opened doors and turned on fans at 0435Z but waited to make sure the dust counts had stabilized before removing the enclosure. The enclosure was removed about 30 minutes later. altitude (Windscreen touched in altitude: UP (2004-06-11 05:09:22Z sdssmcp): 2004-06-11 05:09:44Z) We began with spectroscopy. Plate 1423 (cartridge 7): Guide stars on the gotoField. When combined with data from a previous night (53166), this plate was finished in 2 exposures (1800 sec total). Got the following warning from SoS: sdR-r2-00027117.fit: WARNING: Max sky-residual chi2 = 79.1365 at 8922.17 Ang (ignoring 5577) but neither visual inspection nor apoplotsky showed an obvious problem. Seeing variable (between 1.5" and 2.0") so we stay with spectroscopy. Plate 1821 (cartridge 1): Guide stars after previous offset was cleared. This plate was finished in 3 exposures (3300 sec total). Got another SoS warning: sdR-r2-00027123.fit: WARNING: Max sky-residual chi2 = 113.497 at 8917.82 Ang (ignoring 5577) but again, no obvious problem was seen. SoS also called for a postCal but we had already moved on. The seeing has improved but the moon will rise soon so we stay with spectroscopy. Plate 1680 (cartridge 3): Guide stars after previous offset was cleared. Cals were taken after the science frames. We obtained two 900 sec exposures before this plate expired. Got another sdR-r2-00027125.fit: WARNING: Max sky-residual chi2 = 64.0832 at 8916.90 Ang (ignoring 5577) but no obvious problem was seen. Plate 1569 (cartridge 8): Guide stars after previous offset was cleared. We obtained a single 900 sec exposure before this plate expired. Another SoS warning: sdR-r1-00027130.fit: WARNING: Max sky-residual chi2 = 87.1041 at 8921.67 Ang (ignoring 5577) but no obvious problem was seen. No plates were available after 0944Z so we stopped at this time (approximately 30 minutes before twilight). endNight rejoiced. ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End Begin End Frame ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4667 22:49Z 23:23Z 100 O -48.90 -40.30 71 ignore ---=== IMAGING RUN DETAILS ===--- ---=== SKIPPY RESULTS ===--- Run Frame nFrames stars muErr muRms nuErr nuRms rot az el --------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== LTMATCH RESULTS ===--- Run Field nFields alt az nGood rowMean rowSig colMean colSig rot ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== SPECTROSCOPY DATA SUMMARY ===--- Summary Checked (y/n): YES QA Procedures Done (y/n): YES UT Exp Time flavor comment (S/N)^2 totals ========================================== b1 r1 b2 r2 ----- sequence 27105, plate -9999 ------- 22:58 27105 0.0 bias ----- sequence 27106, plate 1423 ------- 23:05 27106 10.0 flat collimation 23:07 27107 2.0 arc " 23:14 27108 2.1 arc " 23:16 27109 2.1 arc " 23:33 27110 2.1 arc " 23:35 27111 2.1 arc " ----- sequence 27112, plate -9999 ------- 00:27 27112 0.0 bias ----- sequence 27113, plate -9999 ------- 02:02 27113 0.0 bias ----- sequence 27114, plate 1423 ------- 14.2 11.2 14.1 13.7 tonight 05:57 27114 0.0 bias 2.7 3.6 2.9 3.9 53166 06:03 27115 10.0 flat ------------------- 06:05 27116 2.0 arc 16.9 14.8 17.0 17.6 DONE 06:24 27117 900.1 target r2 Max sky-residual warning - see log 06:42 27118 900.1 target ----- sequence 27119, plate 1821 ------- 20.0 15.6 27.0 20.4 DONE 07:00 27119 10.0 flat 07:02 27120 2.0 arc 07:22 27121 900.1 target 07:39 27122 900.1 target 08:08 27123 1500.1 target r2 Max sky-residual warning - see log ----- sequence 27124, plate 1680 ------- 13.0 13.8 13.2 14.4 08:38 27124 900.1 target r2 Max sky-residual warning - see log 08:55 27125 900.1 target 08:58 27126 10.0 flat 09:01 27127 2.0 arc ----- sequence 27128, plate 1569 ------- 4.7 5.1 5.3 5.1 09:18 27128 10.0 flat 09:20 27129 2.0 arc 09:40 27130 900.2 target r1 Max sky-residual warning - see log ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE I ===--- Time Instrument Az Alt Rot Scale pos offset pos offset pos offset ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 06:09Z 7 1423 27.49 -0.0111 81.59 0.0005 205.31 -0.0281 1.000140 07:06Z 1 1821 -46.31 0.0011 54.98 0.0000 142.18 -0.0246 1.000220 08:43Z 3 1680 245.74 0.0000 50.07 0.0000 96.04 0.0000 1.000340 09:18Z 8 1569 276.99 0.0002 50.92 0.0007 116.63 -0.0041 1.000100 ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE II ===--- ---=== DATA TAPE SUMMARY ===--- Goes: JL7598 Stays: JL7599 ---=== FOCUS LOG ===--- setmir piston Temp Wind Time Inst scale M1 M2 Foc Az Alt (C) MPH Dir filt fwhm ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 06:08Z 7 1423 1.00014 -1383 108 135 29 81.5 11.9 19 290 ---- 1.5" 07:06Z 1 1821 1.00022 -2173 -553 80 -46 55.1 11.8 16 300 ---- 1.8" 08:43Z 3 1680 1.00034 -3356 -1548 50 246 50.0 11.1 18 290 ---- 1.3" 09:17Z 8 1569 1.00010 -988 410 50 277 51.1 10.6 20 295 ---- 1.6" ---=== WEATHER LOG ===--- Wind Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust DIMM Sky 22:37Z 64 16 28 258 (WSW) 2856 - 23:08Z 65 17 28 253 (WSW) 2658 - 23:38Z 61 14 22 265 (W) 2131 - 00:10Z 62 15 32 252 (WSW) 2230 - 00:42Z 61 13 24 267 (W) 1531 - 01:14Z 59 12 25 263 (W) 1835 - 01:47Z 57 10 22 263 (W) 1582 - 02:05Z 56 8 19 268 (W) 4682 - dust 02:35Z 54 7 24 271 (W) 4570 - dust 03:05Z 53 6 17 265 (W) 3761 - dust 03:35Z 53 6 15 267 (W) 2565 - dust 04:05Z 54 7 19 287 (WNW) 2268 - dust 04:36Z 54 6 16 265 (W) 2138 - clear 05:08Z 53 5 12 268 (W) 2056 - clear 05:38Z 54 5 17 277 (W) 1852 - clear 06:09Z 53 5 10 307 (NW) 1708 - clear 06:41Z 53 5 15 286 (WNW) 1587 - clear 07:11Z 53 5 14 293 (WNW) 1497 - clear 07:43Z 52 5 19 293 (WNW) 1478 - clear 08:14Z 52 5 17 301 (WNW) 1497 - clear 08:46Z 52 5 16 281 (W) 1642 - clear 09:17Z 51 4 19 295 (WNW) 1487 - clear 09:47Z 50 4 17 299 (WNW) 1609 - clear 10:18Z 50 4 11 323 (NW) 1542 - clear ---=== TELESCOPE STATUS ===--- High dust prevented ventilation and delayed opening. 04:35Z Enclosure doors opened, fans and blowers on, louvers opened. 05:10Z Enclosure off. 10:20Z Enclosure on, doors closed, fans and blowers off, louvers closed.
