APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Friday August 13, 2004 (MJD 53231) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- swing: Jurek Krzesinski night: Mike Harvanek, John Barentine support: Jon Brinkmann (by phone) ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Science! ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- Thunderstorms in the area during the first half of the night gave way to overcast skies and fog during the latter half. We did not open. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Afternoon: ---------- Telescope ok., DAs/imager - ok. While taking bias on spectrographs I've got again message: missing pixels (see problem section), Craig investigated the problem again, and sent his thoughts to Connie. More Ne lamps tests: -------------------- using a command: goStare 3 -flavor arc -comment test We collected a series of Ne lamp arc exposures. Series 1: Ne 1 on (rest off), frame 27868, Ne 2 on (rest off), frame 27869, Ne 3 on , frame 27870, Ne 4 on , frame 27871. Series 2: Ne 1 on , frame 27872, Ne 2 on , frame 27873, Ne 3 on , frame 27874, Ne 4 on , frame 27875. Series 3: Ne 1 on , frame 27876, Ne 2 on , frame 27877, Ne 3 on , frame 27878, Ne 4 on , frame 27879. Connie suggested that it might be a problem with optics above the Ne lamps, which directs the light into ff screen. If lenses are loose, Ne higher or lower light intensity might depend on telescope positon. On the last arc exposrue missing pixel problem happened again (see problem section). Night: ------ Persistent clouds and high humidity after thunderstorms ended late. Conditions never permitted opening, and we gave up at 1000Z. We did TPM archiving only to the cloudy night tapes. endNight rejoiced. ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End Begin End Frame ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4769 22:36Z 23:32Z 100 O 10.84 24.88 108 ignore 4770 03:16Z 03:22Z 100 O 81.04 82.74 8 bias 4770 03:16Z 03:22Z 100 O 81.04 82.74 8 bias 4770 03:16Z 03:28Z 100 O 81.04 84.04 8 ignore 4771 04:12Z 04:19Z 100 O 95.14 96.84 19 ignore 4772 04:31Z 04:33Z 100 O 99.85 100.50 16 ignore 4773 04:37Z 05:06Z 100 O 101.34 108.63 63 ignore ---=== IMAGING RUN DETAILS ===--- ---=== SKIPPY RESULTS ===--- Run Frame nFrames stars muErr muRms nuErr nuRms rot az el --------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== LTMATCH RESULTS ===--- Run Field nFields alt az nGood rowMean rowSig colMean colSig rot ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== SPECTROSCOPY DATA SUMMARY ===--- Summary Checked (y/n): QA Procedures Done (y/n): UT Exp Time flavor comment (S/N)^2 totals ========================================== b1 r1 b2 r2 ----- sequence 27863, plate -9999 ------- 22:33 27863 0.0 bias ----- sequence 27864, plate 1144 ------- 22:41 27864 0.0 bias 22:46 27865 10.0 flat 23:06 27866 0.0 bias 23:39 27867 2.0 arc 23:41 27868 3.0 arc 23:49 27869 3.0 arc 23:54 27870 3.0 arc 00:00 27871 3.0 arc 00:17 27872 3.0 arc 00:22 27873 3.0 arc 00:27 27874 3.0 arc 00:32 27875 3.0 arc 00:51 27876 3.0 arc 01:23 27877 3.0 arc 01:29 27878 3.0 arc 01:36 27879 3.0 arc ----- sequence 27880, plate -9999 ------- 02:47 27880 0.0 bias ----- sequence 27881, plate 1144 ------- 03:18 27881 10.0 flat 03:20 27882 2.0 arc 03:29 27883 2.1 arc 03:33 27884 2.1 arc 05:13 27885 0.0 bias 05:34 27886 2.0 arc 05:42 27887 2.0 arc ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE I ===--- Time Instrument Az Alt Rot Scale pos offset pos offset pos offset ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE II ===--- ---=== DATA TAPE SUMMARY ===--- TPM data written to cloudy night tapes ---=== FOCUS LOG ===--- setmir piston Temp Wind Time Inst scale M1 M2 Foc Az Alt (C) MPH Dir filt fwhm ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 02:50Z 9 1144 1.00000 0 1257 0 121 30.0 14.9 4 157 ---=== WEATHER LOG ===--- Wind Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust DIMM Sky 22:16Z 64 46 17 221 (SW) 196212 - MstlyCldy 22:47Z 64 47 10 204 (SSW) 200457 - MstlyCldy 23:18Z 66 47 9 248 (WSW) 206018 - MstlyCldy 23:49Z 59 45 3 351 (NNW) 220612 - MstlyCldy 00:22Z 58 37 9 65 (ENE) 2 - Overcast 00:54Z 54 41 7 73 (ENE) 256037 - Overcast 01:26Z 55 44 9 171 (S) 293095 - Overcast 02:11Z 55 41 5 107 (ESE) 285536 - Overcast 02:43Z 58 40 6 133 (SE) 263985 - Overcast 03:16Z 57 36 8 106 (ESE) 266526 - Overcast 03:48Z 50 48 3 287 (WNW) 280982 - Overcast 04:20Z 50 47 13 9 (N) 309401 - Overcast 05:25Z 48 47 24 74 (ENE) 361754 - Overcast 05:57Z 47 46 17 71 (ENE) 342771 - Overcast 06:30Z 46 45 21 71 (ENE) 313792 - Overcast 07:02Z 46 44 16 85 (E) 294445 - Overcast 07:34Z 46 44 12 105 (ESE) 297486 - Overcast 08:06Z 51 43 11 182 (S) 286625 - Overcast 08:40Z 46 46 3 244 (WSW) 285525 - Overcast 09:11Z 47 48 11 222 (SW) 415824 - Overcast 09:43Z 47 47 10 209 (SSW) 358290 - Overcast 10:16Z 46 46 7 185 (S) 398802 - Overcast ---=== TELESCOPE STATUS ===--- Never opened. At the same time, the imager appeared to be in a very confused state; watcher reported errors on nearly all the voltages as well as the imager LN2 temp. It's worth noting that there was a significant electrical storm going on in the region (but not immediately near the site) during this time. A goDrift came back with the reply that the connection to the imager was busy (likely the VME problem). We rebooted the crates but the same errors in watcher came back; called Jon Brinkmann who suggested trying an "iack" and that the problem was likely related to lightning. At 0340Z, after issuing the iacks, the alarms all returned along with alarms from the imager micros. Another call to Brinkmann; he had us check the displays on the imager power supplies, which revealed one significantly out of spec. By the time this was verified, it had come back to the nominal values and we were advised to keep an eye on what could be a recurring problem. After what appeared to be a successful goDrift command initially to start an imager bias, the VME errors returned at 0413Z. We did another iack and ejected the tapes; just as we were about to reboot the crates again, images from the goDrift command that appeared at first not to work started showing up on the monitors. An endDrift issued at this time worked and stopped the sequence, but we now had on our hands unarchived frames (the VME problems resolved themselves by this point). Checking the pool revealed that the frames did indeed get archived properly. At this point, we decided to try another imager bias. As soon as Mike issued the goDrift command, it immediately returned with the same error message about the amplifier voltages not being set correctly. Watcher subsequently returned the same VME errors as before, then the archiver complained of no gangs. We took the software-recommended steps of resetting the DA, resetting the amplifier voltages (done automatically), the trying another bias. This time, it worked. Exposure time problem in sop: ----------------------------- We found an apparent bug in sop when attempting to take a 1-second arc with the spectrographs. This command was issued: sp1> goStare 1 -flavor arc -comment test which resulted in the following output: sp1 cameraNag {} t-g-sdss-2.apo.nmsu.edu 2200 sp2 cameraNag {} t-g-sdss-2.apo.nmsu.edu 2200 Flushing charge for 15 sec mcpPut: SYSTEM.STATUS 2004-08-14 05:36:36Z: Original command was !e1! 2004-08-14 05:36:36Z: expected reply was !e1 OK! Error: Mechanicals did not respond correctly; response was e1 However, when we upped the exposure time to 2 seconds, we did not get this error message. This was repeated in four attempts at a 1-second exposure, but consistently did not appear with any other exposure time.
