APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Monday August 16, 2004 (MJD 53234) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- swing: Jurek Krzesinski night: Steph Snedden, Pete Newman ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Science. ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- Wet all night, we did not open. We did, however, conduct extended tests on the HgCd lamps. NB: We are leaving is a space-heater running inside the enclosure, as the inside humidity climbed high during the night. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Afternoon: ---------- Telescope ok., MIGs - in spec, DAs - ok. imager ok., spectrographs in spec - nothing was changed (see problem section). Since there were few pople working on host this afternoon, I didn't reboot the host. More tests on HgCd lamps done, with the _old_ HgCd lamps installed: Test 1): Frames: 27926 - 27935 each taken 10 seconds after switching HgCd lamps on, then after goStare was done, lamps were off for 30 seconds, followed by the next frame. Test 2): Frames: 27936 - 27945 each frame taken after waiting 2 more seconds for HgCd lamps to warm up than previous frame. Lamps were off between frames for 30 seconds. However, due to a problem with communications to the spectrographs, this test halted prematurely. See problem section #1 for the scripts used during tests and details of the more extensive tests conducted during the night. Night: ------ Overcast sky, high humidity, patchy rain and lightning kept use closed until 10:00Z (an hour before twilight) when we gave up. We noted a possible problem with LN2 dewar #16. See problems section #2 for details. Email sent to Norm Blythe and APO Day log. We had a slough of TPM messages in wtcher tonight that look like something may be disconnected. See problems section #3 for details. About 05:30Z, we noted the humidity in the enclosure had reached 83%, so we turned on the HVAC heater (although the HVAC fans were not running because outside humidity was too high, convection brought heat into the upper enclosure). We also placed a space heater inside the door. endNight was run onto the cloudy-night tapes. ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End Begin End Frame ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4777 23:06Z 23:38Z 100 O 21.31 29.39 52 ignore ---=== IMAGING RUN DETAILS ===--- ---=== SKIPPY RESULTS ===--- Run Frame nFrames stars muErr muRms nuErr nuRms rot az el --------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== LTMATCH RESULTS ===--- Run Field nFields alt az nGood rowMean rowSig colMean colSig rot ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== SPECTROSCOPY DATA SUMMARY ===--- Summary Checked (y/n): n QA Procedures Done (y/n): n NB: See problem section #2 for details. See the log of TPM channel tpm_LN2press_spectro between 18:45 MDT and 20:20 MDT. Visual inspection showed the pressure relief valve to be gentle leaking with the same period. We used the pressure relief lever on the fill lines to briefly vent gas and rapped on the valve to clear any sticking. The TPM plot showed this disturbed the pattern for ~15 mins, but it then returned. No significant loss of LN2, so we left the dewar connected. At this time, the dewar contained about 270lb net of LN2, and the enclosure temperature was ~ +14 C. A GIF image of the plot is at http://galileo.apo.nmsu.edu/~prn/dewar#16_pressure.gif The red line is the pressure, and the Y axis scale correspond to it. ================================== Problem #3 - TPM errors in watcher ---------------------------------- The following errors were seen once, at about the same time a spectro exposure seemed to hang. Did we lose communications with a common terminal server or other piece of comms hardware in the lower enclosure? The problem did not recur. dewar (Imager Dewar Low Weight:Spectro Dewar Low Weight:Imager Dewar Scale Communications Fault:Spectro Dewar Scale Communications Fault: 2004-08-17 02:15:19Z ) m1 temp (Excessive M1 - PMSS Difference:Excessive Telescope - Ambient Difference:Excessive Radial Gradient:Excessive Front-Back Difference (Entire Mirror):Excessive Front-Back Difference (Left Half):Excessive Front-Back Difference (Right Half):Excessive Front-Back Difference (Lower Half):Excessive Front-Back Difference (Upper Half): 2004-08-17 02:15:19Z ) env temp (Excessive Lower - Ambient Difference:Excessive Return - Ambient Difference:Excessive Floor - Ambient Difference: 2004-08-17 02:15:19Z ) m1 mig (Communications Fault: 2004-08-17 02:15:19Z) tmicro (Disconnected Sensor in M2B7:Disconnected Sensor in M2B6:Disconnected Sensor in M2B5:Disconnected Sensor in M2B4:Disconnected Sensor in M2B3:Disconnected Sensor in M2B2:Disconnected Sensor in M2B1:Disconnected Sensor in M2B0:Disconnected Sensor in M1B7:Disconnected Sensor in M1B6:Disconnected Sensor in M1B5:Disconnected Sensor in M1B4:Disconnected Sensor in M1B3:Disconnected Sensor in M1B2:Disconnected Sensor in M1B1:Disconnected Sensor in M1B0:Disconnected Sensor in M0B7:Disconnected Sensor in M0B6:Disconnected Sensor in M0B5:Disconnected Sensor in M0B4:Disconnected Sensor in M0B3:Disconnected Sensor in M0B2:Disconnected Sensor in M0B1:Disconnected Sensor in M0B0:Communications Fault: 2004-08-17 02:15:19Z ) m2 galil (Communications Fault: 2004-08-17 02:15:19Z) m1 galil (Communications Fault: 2004-08-17 02:15:19Z) m2 temp (Excessive Radial Gradient:Excessive Front-Back Differential (Entire Mirror):Excessive Front-Back Difference (Left Half):Excessive Front-Back Difference (Right Half):Excessive Front-Back Difference (Lower Half):Excessive Front-Back Difference (Upper Half): 2004-08-17 02:15:19Z ) m2 mig (Communications Fault: 2004-08-17 02:15:19Z)
