APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Wednesday August 25, 2004 (MJD 53243) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- swing: Jurek Krzesinski night: Mike Harvanek, Scot Kleinman With Special guest star: Rich Kron the Science Guy co-starring: French Leger as Hercules and Russell Owen as the Mirror Man with guest appearances by: Steph Snedden as Tireless Soldier Atsuko Nitta as the Little Humble Japanese Girl Joerg Rehmsmeier as the Parasailing German and Peter Falk as Colombo ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Shake and Bake! ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- Primary mirror problems at the start of the night (axials E and F) were out of position. French and Russell helped investigate, but the end fix was LOTS of relaxing. We should discuss this and re-think the relaxing process. We tried to finish plate 1687, but didn't. We got a moony, but otherwise good run on 82N, and a completely good run on SEGUE strip 1260N. Wo0t! We tested Eric's work on PR 6067 and found it worked, but we made some modifications (checked into the mainline) to the output format and would like a couple more modifications made before we close the PR. We could not adjust the PR because GNATS was apparently down. We tested the new merged IOP and most things worked. Some commands failed on some SEGUE stripes- we suspect this is because the parameters for these stripes have not been included wherever they are supposed to be included. We propose that someone take responsibility for testing at least calcStripeParams whenever new SEGUE stripes are derived or put into the science plan. Some PRs would have been filed had GNATS been up. We had varied bouts of trouble with lost TCC connections, the PTVME link, and operator error, but all after Rich went to bed. We therefore propose the Director be in the control room for all future imaging. checkBias complained only about chip 61 (leftRNComp). biasCheck results are in the Problems section (for the lack of any better place to put them). checkFlat reported a failure and warning with chip 42. flatCheck passed perfectly as always. We took donuts and put them on phoenix in /data/photo/optics/mjd - relevant frame #s are in the log. We declared the test iop (v3_140_0) current, despite its remaining problems. Can a reduction type please let us know if (or not) plate 1687 with a S/N of 12.4 can be declared done and thus unplugged? Thank you. We took an imager on-telescope flat at the end of the night, but could not wait for the results of checkFlat. (Data are in /data/photo/optics/mjd/imagerTest on phoenix.) Are you still here? Cool - congratulations, you made if farther than I did. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Afternoon: ---------- Lost connection to sp1 while testing spectrographs with arc exposures. From the display it looked like DA got frozen at the beginning of sp1 reading out. I ended up rebooting sp crate and then restarting servers (host was rebooted as a routine of afternoon checkout, not because of the problem). SOP and the DA frame numbers were fixed and spectrographs seems to be ready for tonight. Jim's request to take arc exposures till lines become saturated done: frames 28365, 28366, 28367, 28368, 28369 are frames taken with only HgCd lamps on, with long warming up time (~5 minutes). Integration times for those frames were 2, 4, 8, 16 and 32 seconds. Similar test was done with Ne lamps on only, see frames: 28370 (2s), 28371 (4s), 28372 (8s), 28373 (16s), 28374 (32s). Spectrographs in spec, ok. DA -ok. Imager - BAD news: Dewar 1 filter g - showed in purple while scrolling on display. It didn't change color on the display after 24 frames. One hour later I took bias again and didn't see bad g bias, but I've seen low frequency bias variations instead in all dewar 1 chips almost on every 2-3-rd frame! (see frames 15, 16, 17 in run 4793). Drift ended shortly after that and new one was started, but dewar 1 bias variations were still visible, however they seemed to me less intense. Telescope ok., MIGs: - E,F axials had to homed, but after homing, they didn't go to spec - can it be connected with the work with galils done today? Guider - test images that Jim requested taken. Warning: French had to manually start the guider fan today. Watcher - couldn't connect to servers, from the other hand my sop window got server connection without any problem. Servers and watcher were restarted connection established after that. While checking the mirrors, Jurek noted that E&F Mig readings for the primary mirror were out of spec. His usual homing/relaxing did not help. Russell and French looked around and could not figure out what was wrong. Sigh. Many, many many relax cycles seemed to put things right. Night: ------ Once the primary was back, we decided to try to sneak in the one remaining needed exposure on plate 1687 even though we could only start the exposure just as the plate's optimal viewing time was expiring (OK, 3 minutes past). 04:24Z cart 3 plate 1687 - no GSOTGTF. An fk5 star was easily found. The 15m exposure, however, did not give enough useful S/N. Seeing blew up (confirmed by the DIMM) right after we started the exposure. 05:23Z The imager is mounted, moon is up and skies slightly non-photometric. We start with an imager bias. This is run 4795. The plan is to do 82 N (in moony conditions for a SN test and an IOP test) next, then a SEGUE stripe - all with the new merged super-IOP. We saw the recent noise patterns in the bias. We stopped this run at frame 34. We called this bias, unknown. 05:42Z We opened the shutters for run 4796 and saw light. We accidentally called it science - it IS NOT! (We forgot to do a scanStripe.) 05:57Z Run 4797 - 82N starting at 121. In focus by frame 18, lambda=123. Seeing also good. Cloud camera reports we're photometric with a SDev of 6.0. Seeing bad from frame 20, lambda=123. but by frame 58, lambda=129, seeing went from bad to good. scanStripe, stripeAxisRates, calcStripeParams, skippy, astrom's skippy, ltMatch, seeingRun, etc. work for the sample Northern, equatorial, and SEGUE stripes we test it for. (We later found failures for some SEGUE stripes. No PR was filed since GNATS was down.) We also tested Eric's new commands as represented by PR 6067. stripeAxisPositions and bestStartWrap seemed to work, but we thought the output very obscure. We checked in some changes that make it a bit better, but would really prefer to see one command that has both the last line of output from bestStartWrap and the new output from stripeAxisPositions. We tried to adjust the PR but GNATS was down. Eric has permission to implement the remaining request above. We tested on 82, a North stripe and a SEGUE stripe. 07:50Z frame 200 lambda=150 - stop drift- called science, good. Still photometric. It was moony, of course - we hope these data will be useful for the SN folk- good seeing, photometric, but moony. 07:56Z Thursday morning's donut run (we got it covered, Madonna). Frame 8-22 in focus at -273. 08:05Z frame 25 - focus moved to -573 - there by frame 28. Donuts look good enough to proceed to try to take science when the moon goes down (but not good enough to eat, unlike the nice leftover Mexican food on site). Donuts are stored on Phoenix (see summary section). 08:07Z frame 29- moving focus to +27 = there by frame 32. 08:11Z we noticed the spectro session complained about the relay server not working. Sure enough, all servers had died and a subsequent attempt to end the drift also resulted in errors (see Problems), throwing us out of IOP. We did a ptvmeReset and since we were close to being able to get SCIENCE IMAGING, we soldiered onward through the fog. We could not get to 72N- IOP gave the following error - GNATS is down, but this MUST get fixed!!!! (How many other SEGUE stripes is this true for?) im> calcStripeParams 72 N -startMu 347 Error: can't read "startNu": no such variable im> tb can't read "startNu": no such variable while executing "GCToSurvey $startMu $startNu..." invoked from within "set startSurvey [GCToSurvey $startMu $startNu..." invoked from within "if {$startMu != ""} { set limits [stripeLimits $stripe] if {[catch {keylget limits nu startNu}] != 0} { errorLog "Cannot specify a M ..." The new goDrift failed because it claimed it could not take control of the camera. We did a: im>ftelnetLogoutPort im but this tried to logout port 8 (the mcpResetPort)not port 18. We logged out port 18 the old fashioned way (A PR should be filed about this!). A new goDrift worked, but by this time we had drifted past our desired startMu, so we re-issued the scanStripe command while drifting. scanStripe was done by frame 11, run 4799. and tried another goDrift and it still failed the same way. seeingRun initially failed: im> schedule seeingRun 4799 60 Reading data ... Seeing is good from the start as is the sky and focus. skippy worked and we are in spec! Something went right! There's not much else to do and things are not loudly complaining, so we bravely proceed. (at frames 100-105, thetaf is -0.0598). For details, see the skippy section, of course. 10:41Z Meanwhile, we ran checkBias and got the following output: im> checkBias 4795 30 . {61 WARN: } {61 FAIL: leftRNComp } The relevant frames are in /data/photo/optics/53243/imagerTest The output of biasCheck is in the Problems section. We had a slight deviation from pure photometricity around 09:45-10:15Z- still below 10, but a bit above 6- maybe 8 or so? 11:10Z endDrift frame 226, mu=61.5. Twilight. 11:30Z we started an in-enclosure (but darkened) imager flat - run 4801. checkFlat reported: im> checkFlat 4801 30 . {42 WARN: leftGain } {42 FAIL: } endNight still running - we'll check it
