APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Friday September 10, 2004 (MJD 53259) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Steph Snedden (swing) Jurek Krzesinski Howard Brewington French Leger and Jon Brinkmann (phone) Steve Bastian (on site) ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Shake, possibly science, too. ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- We completed a 35-star pointing model, collimated the scope, and did another 35-star pointing model. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Swing: ===== An uneventful set-up. No spectro focus check, since engineering camera was mounted. Homed & relaxed the mirrors prior to opening. The primary axials A, B, C set themselves to zero after relaxing. They were re-homed and the NEWRELAX script run again, and this time, everything was fine. Night: ====== While testing the top and bottom balance on the 2.5m telescope at the end of twilight, we noticed an atypical sound coming from the southside of the wind baffle. It happened during up and down movements around 45 degrees. The noise was medium frequency clunk-type sound. We called French, and he asked Steve to come in to investigate. As we waited for Steve to arrive, the Engineering Camera Axis Position procedure was performed since this mainly moved the rotator. See the following results: Degrees x-axis y-axis 00 377 364 90 272 254 180 388 151 270 489 260 ----------------------- 282 257 The nominal values are 384 256. 04:00Z When Steve arrived, we were unable to duplicate the problem for him. However, he discovered a 120-volt junction box on the rotator that was was not properly mounted and which made a similar clunk-like sound when moved. He put some tape on the box to hold it in place unitl Monday. French asked Steve to also check the chain drive on the wind baffle. Fortunately, the chain looked okay. At this point, French thought it was safe to operate the scope. About one hour of time was lost because of this hardware problem. 04:30Z We started the pointing model; a 35-point procedure was done to check the az-tilt adjustments from last night. The results are displayed below and the AN and AW values have improved (AN = 3.0873, AW = -3.0608) as compared to the previous numbers (AN = 10 arcsec, AW = -26 arcsec). show block telmod TCC Telescope Model ! First we looked at the out-of-focus stars during a parked scan; see phoenix:/data/photo/optics/53259 for frame 85. The stars are bottom heavy. Next we adjusted the tilt; see phoenix:/data/photo/optics/53259/145 (frame 145) for donuts after tilt adjustments but before translation was performed. Then phoenix:data/photo/optics/53259/250 (frame 250) was after we did the translation and newRelax. We saved the mirror numbers in a jk1default.dat file. The donuts have greatly improved with respect to symmetry but are still very slightly right-bottom heavy, so we made another try. Our second attempt is stored in jk2default.dat, and the donuts are in phoenix:data/photo/optics/53259/355. We did not think the second collimation results were as good as the first; dewar six was not as good as the others. Consequently, we went with the values in jk1default.dat. See the Problems Section for all the details of collimation. 09:54Z We moved the scope to 70 degrees Alt to home/relax M1. Then we moved to 30 degrees Alt to get the new mirror numbers in log. Finally, we issued the command: saveNominalMigValuesForLog. 10:51Z We mounted the engCam to complete another pointing model; see the following results. The AW and NW have improved as compared to the first pointin model, but not by much. show block telmod TCC Telescope Model ! Method (T=adjust tel. pos.), # active obs. We decided to do another collimation: So we start with: P0 Tx0 Ty0 Dx0 Dy0 PriDesOrient: 0.00 -5.30 1.00 57.00 -288.80 Final tilt Tx', Ty': 0.00 15.00 15.00 57.00 -288.80 20.3" and 14" more dTx=20.3 dTy=14.0 Dx1=57-42.7*14.0 = -540.8 Dy1=-288.8+42.7*20.3 = 578.0 Ty1=-10 Tx1=-11 P0, Tx1, Ty1, Dx1, Dy1 0., -11., -10., -540.8, 578.0 default.dat file copied into jk2default.dat Well after that we've got worse donuts and lateral axiex at -28000, so we went back to the previous collimation step (jk1default.dat) --== misc watcher errors ==-- SecDesMountOutOfRange="FFFTF":: (2004-09-11 10:59:46Z) dewar (Spectro Dewar Scale Communications Fault: 2004-09-11 00:58:54Z) m1 temp (Excessive M1 - PMSS Difference:Excessive Telescope - Ambient Difference:Excessive Radial Gradient:Excessive Front-Back Difference (Entire Mirror):Excessive Front-Back Difference (Left Half):Excessive Front-Back Difference (Right Half):Excessive Front-Back Difference (Lower Half):Excessive Front-Back Difference (Upper Half): 2004-09-11 01:15:54Z ) env temp (Excessive Lower - Ambient Difference:Excessive Return - Ambient Difference:Excessive Floor - Ambient Difference: 2004-09-11 01:15:54Z ) m1 mig (Communications Fault: 2004-09-11 01:15:54Z) tmicro (Disconnected Sensor in M2B7:Disconnected Sensor in M2B6:Disconnected Sensor in M2B5:Disconnected Sensor in M2B4:Disconnected Sensor in M2B3:Disconnected Sensor in M2B2:Disconnected Sensor in M2B1:Disconnected Sensor in M2B0:Disconnected Sensor in M1B7:Disconnected Sensor in M1B6:Disconnected Sensor in M1B5:Disconnected Sensor in M1B4:Disconnected Sensor in M1B3:Disconnected Sensor in M1B2:Disconnected Sensor in M1B1:Disconnected Sensor in M1B0:Disconnected Sensor in M0B7:Disconnected Sensor in M0B6:Disconnected Sensor in M0B5:Disconnected Sensor in M0B4:Disconnected Sensor in M0B3:Disconnected Sensor in M0B2:Disconnected Sensor in M0B1:Disconnected Sensor in M0B0:Communications Fault: 2004-09-11 01:15:54Z ) m2 galil (Communications Fault: 2004-09-11 01:15:54Z) tracking (Excessive Az Tracking Error:: 2004-09-11 02:41:06Z) 1 galil (Communications Fault: 2004-09-11 01:15:54Z) ca (Channel Access Failure: TPM Down?: 2004-09-11 01:15:54Z) m2 temp (Excessive Radial Gradient:Excessive Front-Back Differential (Entire Mirror):Excessive Front-Back Difference (Left Half):Excessive Front-Back Difference (Right Half):Excessive Front-Back Difference (Lower Half):Excessive Front-Back Difference (Upper Half): 2004-09-11 01:15:54Z) dewar (Imager Dewar Scale Communications Fault:: 2004-09-11 04:50:54Z) m2 mig (Communications Fault: 2004-09-11 00:54:16Z) altitude (Windscreen touched in altitude: DOWN (2004-09-11 01:49:59Z sdssmcp): 2004-09-11 01:50:03Z) Text="doread failed":: (2004-09-11 02:05:53Z) Modu="cam o SetCamera" (2004-09-11 00:53:01Z) Text="failed to move one or more axes":AxisNoTrack:"TTT" (2004-09-11 01:53:22Z) Modu="prt Read" (2004-09-11 01:20:28Z) GCamReply=":ppk error: Error code : 116 Modu="axe i SchMove" (2004-09-11 01:53:46Z) Modu="axe o Init" (2004-09-11 01:53:46Z) Text="new position rejected":AxisNoSlew:"FFT" (2004-09-11 04:07:20Z) Modu="exe Track" (2004-09-11 01:53:46Z) SecDesMountOutOfRange="FFFTF":: (2004-09-11 02:15:22Z) Modu="prt ReadReplySet" (2004-09-11 01:53:22Z) Modu="prt Init Forth" (2004-09-11 00:53:01Z)
