Our new pointing model got Sky RMS = 2.94 and SD = 3.29. Steph traced the problem to alt errors beeing too large. Also we got again too-large-to-correct errors while we were fiducializing the telescope. Most of them showed at high alt. Night: ------ We decided to take more fiducial data to see if we are getting consistent fiducial readings, and to see if we get the same high errors as in the checked-in alt fiducial table, and then take a short pointing model. We will have to punch through some altocirrus, so don't think we'll be wasting science time. The new fiducial sweeps showed similar errors to the already checked-in tables, so we did not implement them. The larger than usual errors (and the more frequent too-large-to-correct errors in alt) look more and more like a mechanical problem, possibly with the read head. We saved a plot of the errors vs. fiducial id on galileo in ~snedden/alterrors.ps Note that the upward & downward crossings for fiducials 2 - 5 are offset, especially for fiducial 5. A comparison of the errors pre and post read-head engineering work are in the problems section. The errors have increased by about a factor of 4. While setting up for the pointing model, we had a minor problem with the engcam. We still anticipated scatter in altitude, but hoped other errors would be reduced, since the weather conditions were better tonight. The model came out similar to last night's, but since PSFs were better, and the results were about 0.2 asec better in FWHM, we implemented tonight's model. We still saw many alt too large to correct errors, not surprising given the fiducial read errors. We may want to relax the no-correct limit for this dark run if it proves to be problematic for pointing. The errors are listed in the problems section. 04:31Z We set up for SN Imaging. A quick collimation check with the imager indicated that collimation is okay, though we decided to check donuts again at the end of the night. Early night donuts saved to /data/photo/optics/53286. The donuts were slightly right-heavy as viewed in the monitors. The necessary tilt to correct for this was small...just 10 asec in the +x direction. The old values were saved to default_before_sj.dat. Jurek has written some code to do the optical collimation tilt & translation calculations so that sleepy minds will be less apt to err. The code is at the end of the log. Run 4870 Bias on the telescope. During the bias, Jurek's iop gave a ptvme shared access error on ad4.
