APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Monday October 11, 2004 (MJD 53290) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Swing: Pete Newman Night: Mike Harvanek, Scot Kleinman Support: Jon Brinkmann (by phone), Carlos Gonzales (FNAL), French Leger (FNAL, by phone) Visitors: John Marriner, Jen Adelman-McCarthy (FNAL), Ben Dilday (U. Chicago) ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- SN Science. ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- No data. A new telescope problem - cannot move more than 15 degrees or so in az without triggering a slip/abort. Carlos worked on it; French will continue tomorrow. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Swing shift =========== Thunderstorms in early afternoon seem to be receeding to the east. When I issued start_servers -K after rebooting sdsshost, only a main server window remained on monx1 a few minutes later (not sure if the sub-servers started then failed, or simply never started). I issued the command again and all was well. Spectrograph focus was checked (tpm_TM_PMSSAvg = 8.2). b1 was marginal (Mean offset = -0.15 pix), but since tonight is scheduled as a supernovae imaging night, no adjustment was made. Xmin, Xmax, Wmin, Wmax all within tolerance. During physical checkout of the telescope we found a serious problem with the azimuth servo. Attempts to slew counterclockwise were aborting with apparent slips on encoder az#2 every 12-15 degrees, while slews clockwise were almost all succeeding. Wit some effort, three of us managed to clean the azimuth encoder wheels, which were caked in moth to either side of the contact surface. This did not solve the problem. We also found one 1.5-in long Allen-headed bolt, a large spring washer, and 2" x 0.5" metal bar in the space between the rotating floor and the forks. Removing those also did not solve the problem. After consulting with Jon Brinkmann, he spoke to Carlos Gonzales who came in to make a judgement as to whether we can operate with the az#2 encoder disabled for slip detection, as further work would require major dissaembly of the enocder unit and tests revealed no real problems with the drive system.
