APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Tuesday November 9, 2004 (MJD 53319) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- John Barentine Howard Brewington Mike Harvanek (swing) Dan Long (phone support) Visitor: Douglas Tucker (FNAL) ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Supernova science (early) and regular survey science (late) ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- Battled clouds for a good part of the night, then highly variable seeing later on. We managed to image the supernova stripe over -167 < Lambda < -125. We then switched to spectro and finished one survey plate, 1923. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Afternoon: ---------- Spectro collimation adjusted. Details in the Problems section. Windscreen touch during checkout: altitude (Windscreen touched in altitude: UP (2004-11-09 23:16:53Z sdssmcp): 2004-11-09 23:17:07Z) No other problems to report. Night: ------ There was a windscreen touch in altitude during instrument change, one of several we experienced tonight. See Problems section. In order to hit the beginning of 82 N right at the starting window for the stripe, we slewed the telescope to lambda=123 about 40 minutes prior to the end of twilight at 00:53Z. As luck would have it, the few clouds overhead at sunset thickened substantially as the deep low pressure center, parked over Four Corners earlier in the day, began moving southeastwardly rather than on the forecast eastward track. Run 4947: On-telescope bias while we waited for twilight to end. The sky was sufficiently dark, but we closed the mirror cover petals as a precaution. Temperatures dropping after sunset made orographic cloud formation favorable and by 01:15Z the sky was opaque. At 01:40Z, fearing the potential for rain, we put the enclosure back on. We had another windscreen touch in altitudeduring closure. Clouds cleared rapidly after 04:30Z. Once we felt assured that humidity was not going to spike, we re-opened at 04:55Z and then force-filled the spectrographs given that they had suffered a lot of spillover of LN2 with all the up-down-up-down so far tonight. Bringing the scope up, we got another windscreen touch in altitude. Wind gusts topped 35MPH shortly after 03:05Z. We lowered the garage doors further but left fans and blowers on. Humidity spiked after 04:00Z but by 04:30 we were confident enough that the spikes had ended, and we opened at 04:55Z. Run 4948 (Stripe 82 N, startLambda=-167): The run began ordinarily enough, but focus at first appeared to be WAY off, despite our use of the usual association between focus and air temperature. The monitors in the control room showed long, bright streaks that looked like trailed, out-of-focus donuts. The trails persisted for a frame or so before disappearing, supplanted by new streaks. We tried moving focus both directions by several hundred steps, suspecting a serious discrepancy between predicted and actual focus. We started to worry that something was seriously wrong, and got Dan on the phone. He went through a couple of troubleshooting steps before pointing out what we'd missed: setting the instrument to imager. Problem solved. Ramp begam at frame 53. In focus by frame 45, skippy was happy by frame 40 and position errors on the axes were in limits (nuErr=2.4, thetaF=0.077). The ramp began at frame 53 for 13 frames, with the first science frame at 66. The run progressed quietly though we were never in spec for survey-quality imaging in terms of seeing. Science ended at frame 347, lambda=-125. The ramp ended at frame 360. (Note: I missed focus and offsets for the imaging run in the log. Sorry. -jcb) Seeing was still bad at the end of the SN stripe, so we switched to spectro. We had an altitude slip on the way up to 70 degrees from 30, at about altitude 47 degrees. Balance, however, seemed to be okay based on voltages read in the MCP. 09:05Z Loaded Cart 4, Plate 1923 (tile 1410, chunk99). Stars on gotoField. The focus sweep done on this plate suggested varying best focus values for different fibers, as if the plate were tilted or warped, but seeing was varying pretty significantly during this time. This rendered the efficiency low (about 50%) so we began with a 1200 s science exposure. SoS didn't reduce the flat and the arc taken during the preCalib in a timely fashion, so we did an sosRedo to force it. After waiting more than ten minutes, the results came in for the flat: bad focus of both the spectrographs. We aborted the science exposure at 09:38Z and stopped to re-focus the spectrographs (results of goSpecFocus are in the Problems section). Satisfied with the results, we started science again with 1200 s exposures due to persistent bad seeing. Efficiency was typically low, giving (S/N)^2 no better than ~2.5 on some exposures. Finished the plate in five exposures, which took us right up to and past twilight a little, though we did get a whopping fiber warning in SoS on the last exposure: sdR-r1-00029301.fit: WARNING: Whopping fiber # 106 (may have adverse affect on S/N) Did a postCalib even though none was called for. Put the telescope and associated complications to bed at 12:35Z. Servers died on us at 13:03Z while we waited for the completion of endNight and twilight flats on the PT. We restarted them. endNight rejoiced ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End Begin End Frame
