APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Sunday March 6, 2005 (MJD 53436) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Swing: Howard Brewington Night: Mike Harvanek John Barentine Special guest star: Craig Loomis (phone support) ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Science! ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- Fretted over unsettled weather for the first couple of hours of the night, then as the sky cleared, proceeded to finish six survey plates. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Swing: ============= Had no problems with the afternoon checkout. The spectro focus was checked but not adjusted because of inside/outside temp difference; see Problems Section for focus numbers. Although I noticed no water in the lower enclosure, water was on the floor (west side) of the upper enclosure, so I put down a few of the absorbent mats. Night: ============= There were thunderstorms over most of New Mexico and Arizona during the early evening. It was sufficiently clear to open but we didn't want any surprises and so remained closed. Around 04:00Z the mcp crashed and did not come back to life on repeated reboots. Eventually it came back. With threats on radar diminishing after 04:00Z, we opened half an hour later. 04:40Z Cart 1, Plate 1950 (tile 1405, chunk99). Guide stars on gotoField. Finished this plate in three exposures of 900, 700 and 600 seconds, respectively. 06:05Z Cart 4, Plate 1996 (tile 1452, chunk100). No guide stars on gotoField. fk5InFiber and additional offsets of A=+4 D=-2 found our stars. Finished the plate in three exposures of 700 s each. Though the sky was photometric throughout this period, we noted that the humidity was slowly but steadily rising and decided NOT to mount the imager. 07:15Z Cart 5, Plate 2035 (tile 1491, chunk 100). Mike's SOP session died during the setup for this plate (see Problems section for details), so I briefly took over while he brought SOP back up. Guide stars on gotoField. Guide fiber 11 didn't seem to show a guide star while all the others did, so we disabled fiber 11 for this plate. Finished this plate in three exposures of 700, 700 and 900 s, respectively. 08:25Z Cart 2, Plate 1982 (tile 1438, chunk100). No stars on gotoField. Neither did an fk5 InFiber get us anywhere. Clearing the accumulated offsets, however, did. Finished this plate in three exposures of 700, 800 and 600 s, respectively. 09:40Z Cart 7, Plate 1767 (tile 1272, chunk92). Stars on gotoField. Seeing wasn't so hot during this plate so we exposed longer than prerviously, finishing the plate in three exposures of 1000, 1000 and 600 s, respectively. 10:50Z Cart 9, Plate 1683 (tile 1188, chunk85). No stars on gotoField. fk5InFiber gave us nothing, and spiralPattern died before completion (see Problems section). Second iteration of spiralPattern found it, although it was way far from center. Finished this plate in three exposures of 1100, 1000 and 900 s. endNight rejoiced. ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End Begin End Frame ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5177 22:35Z 22:51Z 100 O -147.29 -143.36 40 ignore ---=== IMAGING RUN DETAILS ===--- ---=== SKIPPY RESULTS ===--- Run Frame nFrames stars muErr muRms nuErr nuRms rot az el --------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== LTMATCH RESULTS ===--- Run Field nFields alt az nGood rowMean rowSig colMean colSig rot ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== SPECTROSCOPY DATA SUMMARY ===--- Summary Checked (y/n): yes QA Procedures Done (y/n): yes UT Exp Time flavor comment (S/N)^2 totals ========================================== b1 r1 b2 r2 ----- sequence 31211, plate -9999 ------- 22:32 31211 0.0 bias ----- sequence 31212, plate 1670 ------- 23:27 31212 10.0 flat 23:29 31213 2.0 arc 23:35 31214 2.1 arc 23:38 31215 2.1 arc ----- sequence 31216, plate -9999 ------- 01:17 31216 0.0 bias ----- sequence 31217, plate 1950 ------- 16.7 15.9 19.6 19.5 DONE 04:54 31217 0.0 bias 05:10 31218 10.0 flat 05:13 31219 2.0 arc 05:32 31220 900.1 target 05:47 31221 700.1 target 06:00 31222 600.1 target ----- sequence 31223, plate 1996 ------- 15.5 17.1 18.2 17.6 DONE 06:20 31223 10.0 flat 06:22 31224 2.0 arc 06:39 31225 700.1 target 06:54 31226 700.1 target 07:08 31227 700.1 target ----- sequence 31228, plate -9999 ------- 07:19 31228 0.0 bias ----- sequence 31229, plate 2035 ------- 16.5 16.1 20.0 17.9 DONE 07:29 31229 10.0 flat 07:32 31230 2.0 arc 07:49 31231 700.1 target 08:04 31232 700.1 target 08:22 31233 900.2 target ----- sequence 31234, plate 1982 ------- 14.4 16.2 16.3 17.5 DONE 08:44 31234 10.0 flat 08:47 31235 2.0 arc 09:04 31236 700.1 target 09:20 31237 800.1 target 09:33 31238 600.2 target ----- sequence 31239, plate 1767 ------- 15.2 17.1 15.6 16.0 DONE 09:46 31239 10.0 flat 09:48 31240 2.0 arc 10:09 31241 1000.1 target 10:29 31242 1000.1 target 10:42 31243 600.1 target ----- sequence 31244, plate 1683 ------- 21.1 15.2 25.6 18.3 DONE 11:20 31244 10.0 flat 11:22 31245 2.0 arc 11:45 31246 1100.1 target 12:04 31247 1000.1 target 12:22 31248 900.1 target ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE I ===--- Time Instrument Az Alt Rot Scale pos offset pos offset pos offset ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 05:17Z 1 1950 76.01 -0.0061 79.79 0.0023 250.00 0.0358 1.000240 06:26Z 4 1996 123.40 -0.0023 75.30 0.0036 -66.21 0.0168 1.000210 07:35Z 5 2035 132.20 -0.0134 84.90 0.0036 -50.51 0.0778 1.000120 08:51Z 2 1982 259.87 -0.0002 62.06 -0.0001 98.38 0.0118 1.000080 09:50Z 7 1767 -52.04 -0.0007 63.80 -0.0004 136.57 -0.0097 1.000050 11:38Z 9 1683 104.84 -0.0093 81.99 0.0034 -80.48 0.0524 1.000120 ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE II ===--- ---=== DATA TAPE SUMMARY ===--- Goes: JL8350 Stays: JL8351 ---=== FOCUS LOG ===--- setmir piston Temp Wind Time Inst scale M1 M2 Foc Az Alt (C) MPH Dir filt fwhm ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 01:20Z 8 1670 1.00000 0 1257 0 121 30.2 -0.7 12 306 05:17Z 1 1950 1.00024 -2369 -543 300 76 79.7 -0.7 11 294 -- 1.3 06:26Z 4 1996 1.00021 -2073 -343 250 124 75.4 -1.3 17 307 -- 1.3 07:35Z 5 2035 1.00012 -1184 359 225 132 84.9 -1.6 18 305 -- 1.2 08:52Z 2 1982 1.00008 -790 668 175 260 62.0 -1.5 19 308 -- 1.5 09:51Z 7 1767 1.00005 -494 910 175 -52 63.8 -1.4 12 323 -- 1.9 11:38Z 9 1683 1.00012 -1185 261 125 105 82.1 -1.1 5 321 -- 1.8 ---=== WEATHER LOG ===--- Wind Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust DIMM Sky 22:25Z 31 21 4 258 (WSW) 288 - He reissued the command and it appeared to work. The gotoField moved the telescope to a new position but then Mike's sop window started asking if he was connected to the tcc and complaining that it couldn't follow the progress of the track command. Then, after complaining that the guider flat was too faint, sop dumped core. John took over from his sop session while Mike restarted his sop. We lost about 15 minutes due to this problem.
