APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Monday March 7, 2005 (MJD 53437) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Swing: Howard Brewington Night: Mike Harvanek John Barentine ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Science! ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- Finished 3 plates (2074, 1956, 614). Photometric all night but a large portion was lost to high humidity. There was an ion pump pressure event. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Swing: ============== Had no problems with the afternoon checkout. Spectro focus was checked but not adjusted; see Problems Section for focus numbers. Night: ============== Clear at sunset but rising humidity kept us closed until about 02:25Z. Photometric but wind speed and direction may not be favorable for imaging so we begin with spectroscopy. Plate 2074 (cartridge 3): Segue faint. Guide stars were difficult to obtain. John had to clear offsets and then hunt for the FK5. When combined with previous data (53432, 53433), this plate was finished in 2 exposures (2100 s total). SoS warned of a whopping fiber. We had an ion pump pressure critcal error: ion pump pr (1.58 : 2005-03-08 03:20:21Z) There is a list of pressure readings and corresponding times for about 23 minutes (until the pressure got down to about 1) after the alert. These are probably unnecessary with the new data logger in operation but we collected the information anyway. Conditions are photometric with good seeing but the humidity is hovering around the closure limit and we are not yet confident that the humidity will allow us to remain open long enough to get a usable amount of imaging data. So, we stay with spectroscopy. Plate 1956 (cartridge 1): Survey. Guide stars were difficult to obtain. Again, no guide stars on gotoField and no FK5. John cleared offsets but still nothing. John then applied the offsets from the previous plate and found the FK5. These previous offsets had been "stickied" (verifed from the sopGUI command murmur log window) so why didn't we get guide stars or an FK5 on the gotoField? Note, however, that the offsets recorded for the 2 plates in the Offsets section are differnet. Weird. This plate was finished in 3 exposures (2200 s total). We closed for humidity around 05:23Z. We started ventilating again around 10:23Z and opened again about 10:54Z. Plate 614 (cartridge 9): Survey. Guide stars on the gotoField. The first guider focus attempt died because the guider image did not arrive promptly (gimg1281 was the last one that came up). A second attempt was successful. This plate was finished in 3 exposures (2700 s total). endNight rejoiced. ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End Begin End Frame ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5178 22:32Z 22:48Z 100 O -147.12 -143.13 40 ignore ---=== IMAGING RUN DETAILS ===--- ---=== SKIPPY RESULTS ===--- Run Frame nFrames stars muErr muRms nuErr nuRms rot az el --------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== LTMATCH RESULTS ===--- Run Field nFields alt az nGood rowMean rowSig colMean colSig rot ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== SPECTROSCOPY DATA SUMMARY ===--- Summary Checked (y/n): YES QA Procedures Done (y/n): YES UT Exp Time flavor comment (S/N)^2 totals ========================================== b1 r1 b2 r2 ----- sequence 31249, plate -9999 ------- 22:31 31249 0.0 bias ----- sequence 31250, plate 2074 ------- 23:07 31250 10.0 flat test 23:09 31251 2.0 arc test 23:32 31252 2.2 arc test 23:34 31253 2.1 arc test ----- sequence 31254, plate -9999 ------- 23:54 31254 0.0 bias 01:01 31255 0.0 bias ----- sequence 31256, plate 2074 ------- 23.8 17.1 24.9 21.5 tonight 03:08 31256 10.0 flat 27.3 19.2 31.8 23.6 53433 03:10 31257 2.0 arc 22.4 13.8 25.5 17.6 53432 03:33 31258 900.1 target ------------------- 03:56 31259 1200.1 target 73.5 50.1 82.2 62.7 DONE ----- sequence 31260, plate 1956 ------- 04:23 31260 10.0 flat 04:25 31261 2.0 arc 16.6 16.6 20.7 18.9 DONE 04:46 31262 900.1 target 05:00 31263 700.1 target 05:13 31264 600.1 target ----- sequence 31265, plate 614 ------- 21.1 16.0 16.9 14.7 DONE 11:21 31265 10.0 flat 11:23 31266 2.0 arc 11:43 31267 900.1 target 12:01 31268 900.1 target 12:19 31269 900.2 target ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE I ===--- Time Instrument Az Alt Rot Scale pos offset pos offset pos offset ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 03:28Z 3 2074 13.96 -0.0031 74.97 0.0020 192.27 0.0000 1.000060 04:30Z 1 1956 93.30 0.0005 67.00 0.0041 258.68 0.0051 1.000250 11:27Z 9 614 181.10 0.0028 67.04 0.0028 1.53 0.0083 0.999980 ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE II ===--- ---=== DATA TAPE SUMMARY ===--- Goes: JL8352 Stays: JL8353 ---=== FOCUS LOG ===--- setmir piston Temp Wind Time Inst scale M1 M2 Foc Az Alt (C) MPH Dir filt fwhm ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 03:28Z 3 2074 1.00006 -593 823 190 15 74.9 1.0 12 318 ---- 1.1" 04:29Z 1 1956 1.00025 -2468 -706 200 93 66.8 0.8 6 290 ---- 1.4" 11:27Z 9 614 0.99998 198 1385 85 181 67.0 0.6 6 353 ---- 1.4" ---=== WEATHER LOG ===--- Wind Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust DIMM Sky 22:25Z 37 28 10 270 (W) 340 - 22:57Z 39 30 6 249 (WSW) 277 - 23:27Z 38 26 7 269 (W) 247 - 23:57Z 37 27 7 318 (NW) 243 - 00:30Z 37 27 5 279 (W) 228 - 01:02Z 35 27 6 269 (W) 211 - clear 01:58Z 33 24 13 305 (NW) 247 - clear 02:30Z 33 24 12 328 (NNW) 242 - clear 03:03Z 33 28 7 324 (NW) 230 - clear 03:33Z 33 28 10 334 (NNW) 204 - clear 04:03Z 33 27 9 305 (NW) 221 - clear 04:34Z 33 26 5 283 (WNW) 227 - clear 05:07Z 32 27 6 287 (WNW) 251 - clear 05:37Z 32 27 6 296 (WNW) 295 - clear 06:08Z 33 25 7 315 (NW) 235 - clear 06:40Z 32 27 9 303 (WNW) 340 - clear 07:12Z 32 26 8 308 (NW) 513 - clear 07:45Z 32 25 12 307 (NW) 404 - clear 08:17Z 32 24 7 334 (NNW) 341 - clear 08:49Z 32 24 8 337 (NNW) 324 - clear 09:21Z 32 25 9 352 (NNW) 344 - clear 09:53Z 32 24 13 342 (NNW) 281 - clear 10:26Z 32 24 11 344 (NNW) 301 - clear 10:58Z 32 23 2 353 (NNW) 290 - clear 11:28Z 33 24 5 333 (NNW) 275 - clear 11:58Z 33 24 7 349 (NNW) 267 - clear 12:30Z 33 25 5 349 (NNW) 247 - clear ---=== TELESCOPE STATUS ===--- 23:49Z Enclosure doors opened, fans and blowers on, louvers opened. 02:25Z Enclosure off. 05:23Z Enclosure on, doors closed, fans and blowers off, louvers closed (humidity). 10:23Z Enclosure doors opened, fans and blowers on, louvers opened. 10:54Z Enclosure off. 12:28Z Enclosure on, doors closed, fans and blowers off, louvers closed.
