APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Monday March 28, 2005 (MJD 53458) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Jurek Krzesinski John Barentine Mike Harvanek (swing) Eric Neilsen (by phone). ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Shakedown. ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- New fiducial tables were not installed because the older tables had much smaller errors. Mirrors were homed and relaxed - no problems here. No pointing model tonight (clouds). We've done Eric's PR 5862 test, which seems to work as adviced. Also we menaged to get on sky with the engcamera and find that it's optical axis position is good. Soon, clouds made us to close the telescope. PROBLEMS: --------- While closed we tried to test Mamoru calibration aliveness- and found out, that it's endcoder display is not working as well as stageX (more details in the log). Jon, could you please take care about it during the day so we could do calibration tomorrow night - thanks. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Afternoon: ---------- The DA was upset and it took 2 reboots of all 3 crates and a few new tapes to finally make it happy. The servers died during the DA unhappiness and had to be restarted. Mirror numbers were obtained before homing and relaxing. M1 E and F were slightly out of spec (0.06 off nominal where 0.05 is the spec limit). Hopefully, homing and relaxing will bring them back into agreement. A spectro collimation check was not performed because the engineering camera was mounted. The new PT flat field lamp was installed on 03-25. New fiducial tables were created but were found to have much larger errors when compared to the current tables (v1_38). So, the current tables were left in place and no new tables were installed. Note that fiducial tables are supposed to be found in /p/mcp/current mcp version #/fiducial-tables/ However, there are no tables in any of these directories since v5_14_0 (Nov 2002). Is this a problem? Fortunately, fiducial tables can be found in /p/mcp_fiducials. Over the last 2 days, all daytime shakedown duties were performed. Night: ------ Mirrors were homed and relaxed, and new mig values were put in the mirrors section. MIGs are in spec. We run iop v3_143_1 (test iop tonight) and tested Eric's shake request PR 5862: goDrift (with imager in the doghouse), run 5213. im>teamster 100 im>getFrameNumberOnDisk -> frame: 12 (on astrometric screens 15) waited 0.5 s im>getFrameNumberOnDisk -> frame: 40 screens: 43, waited 0.5 s im>getFrameNumberOnDisk -> frame: 76 screens: 78, waited 0.5 s im>teamster 1 im>getFrameNumberOnDisk -> frame: 79 screens:82, waited 2 s im>teamster 500 im>getFrameNumberOnDisk -> frame: 84 screens:86, waited 2 s im>teamster 1 im>getFrameNumberOnDisk -> frame: 98 screens:102,waited 2 s new iop session started within 2 minutes. im>teamster 1 -force im>getFrameNumberOnDisk -> frame: 112, screens: 114, watied 2 s new iop session started within 2 minutes. im>teamster 500 -force im>getFrameNumberOnDisk -> frame: 132, screens: 142, waited 1 s new iop session started within 2 minutes. Looks like there was no noticable change in the speed the getFrameNumberOnDisk returned the results regardles on the teamster beeing on or off. All IOP sessions also behaved the same way when started, with teamster on and off. The weather is too bad for the pointing model at the moment, but we'll try to get on brightest stars in the sky and check the engcam optical axis center and rough collimation. 05:35 Telescope opened. Collimation looks fine as far as we can tell by donut images on eng camera, but the seeing is bad. The best focus for engcam found at 370 (seeing: 4.8 pixels) The optical axis center (binned) was: 383, 257 - which is very close to where it suppose to be. 06:25Z The clouds became to thick to see the stars. Since it looks like it will be hours before the sky will clear, we decided to close the dome and do the aliveness of Mamoru calibrator. MAMORU CALIBTRATOR ALIVNESS: ----------------------------- 07:29Z Good that we check on the calibrator - it's not working. What we found out is that the black encoder display is not working - when we switched it on we saw number 3 on the dispalay (but it should be rather some thousands). We zeroed it, but turning the crank on the dog house did not change the number displayed on the encoder display (still zero and it didn't matter which direction we turned the crank). Also we noticed that we couldn't change the stage (dewar position). All power supplies were on and displays showed what they suppose to show. 11:29Z Twilight begins just when the half of the sky got clear... too late to do any on sky observations. endNight finished ok. ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End Begin End Frame ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5212 03:33Z 03:43Z 100 O -50.99 -48.32 30 ignore 5213 03:45Z 05:53Z 100 O -47.79 -15.67 180 engineering ---=== IMAGING RUN DETAILS ===--- ---=== SKIPPY RESULTS ===--- Run Frame nFrames stars muErr muRms nuErr nuRms rot az el --------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== LTMATCH RESULTS ===--- Run Field nFields alt az nGood rowMean rowSig colMean colSig rot ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== SPECTROSCOPY DATA SUMMARY ===--- Summary Checked (y/n): shake QA Procedures Done (y/n): shake UT Exp Time flavor comment (S/N)^2 totals ========================================== b1 r1 b2 r2 ----- sequence 31569, plate -9999 ------- 23:54 31569 0.0 bias 01:38 31570 0.0 bias 01:55 31571 0.0 bias ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE I ===--- Time Instrument Az Alt Rot Scale pos offset pos offset pos offset ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE II ===--- ---=== DATA TAPE SUMMARY ===--- Goes: JL none Stays: JL none ---=== FOCUS LOG ===--- setmir piston Temp Wind Time Inst scale M1 M2 Foc Az Alt (C) MPH Dir filt fwhm ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== WEATHER LOG ===--- Wind Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust DIMM Sky 23:05Z 52 4 25 231 (SW) 234 - 23:38Z 49 8 17 212 (SSW) 326 - 00:10Z 46 8 9 213 (SSW) 368 - 00:40Z 43 11 19 204 (SSW) 478 - 01:13Z 44 10 15 227 (SW) 485 - cloudy 01:45Z 43 10 12 238 (WSW) 465 - cloudy 02:17Z 44 11 15 256 (WSW) 429 - cloudy 03:14Z 43 12 19 250 (WSW) 520 - 03:46Z 43 13 20 227 (SW) 716 - 04:18Z 42 13 20 223 (SW) 833 - 04:51Z 42 12 18 241 (WSW) 654 - 05:27Z 43 11 16 249 (WSW) 804 - 05:59Z 42 11 18 252 (WSW) 570 - 06:31Z 42 11 17 252 (WSW) 537 - 07:04Z 42 11 21 260 (W) 536 - 07:40Z 41 11 25 261 (W) 507 - 08:12Z 39 11 23 257 (WSW) 585 - 08:45Z 39 11 16 256 (WSW) 530 - 09:17Z 38 10 24 252 (WSW) 540 - 09:53Z 38 11 20 251 (WSW) 578 - 10:26Z 38 11 29 266 (W) 683 - 10:58Z 36 12 21 262 (W) 707 - ---=== TELESCOPE STATUS ===--- 01:20Z Enclosure doors opened, fans and blowers on, louvers opened. 05:35Z Enclosure off the telescope. ---=== SOFTWARE USED ===--- IOP/SOP: v3_143_1 Watcher: v2_30_0 MCP: v5_26_0 TPM: tpm_v2_47_0 AstroDa: v14_47 TCC: TCC 2.7.2.1 August 6 2004 sdssProcedures: v1_98 SoS: v4_10_7 hoggPT: v1_6_9 plate-mapper: v4_3_1 ---=== MIRROR NUMBERS ===--- Before homing/relaxing: PRIMARY: -------- Scale: 1.000000 MIGS TONIGHT NOMINAL Axial A 0.5810 0.5770 Axial B 0.5950 0.5880 Axial C 0.9460 0.9460 Trans D -8.1950 -8.1960 Lateral E 9.9695 10.0330 Lateral F 11.5316 11.5951 GALILS Commanded: 4300. -1900. 2850. -13300. -7600. -7650.
