APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Saturday April 9, 2005 (MJD 53470) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- John Barentine Steph Snedden Mike Harvanek (swing) ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Science! ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- Cloudy, windy and dusty most of the night. Finished one plate (1400). ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Afternoon: ---------- Based on the temperatures forecast for tonight, no adjustments to the spectro collimation were made. Numbers are in the Problems section. During checkout, all the rotator corrections were too large to apply. Forcing a fiducial solved the problem. High wind and dust prevented early ventilation. The building was pressurized to help keep the dust out. Night: ------ High winds, dust and clouds for all but the last 1-1.5 hours of the night. While waiting to open, around 08:30Z, we took a flat and arc with the dome closed to check the spectro focus. XSIGMA values on the flat were fine so we think we are near where we need to be given the outside airTemp. 10:17Z Opened once skies finally cleared. 10:27Z Cart 9 Plate 1400 (tile 1070, chunk70). We begin with a (S/N)^2 of 13.4 on this plate, so one exposure should do it. No guide stars on gotoField (but using last night's offsets). We cleared those offsets and had guide stars. On the preCal we had bad numbers for XSIGMA, as high as 1.10; then again, the spectrograph focus had been earlier set for +7.5 C, and by now the airTemp was -5.5 C. We issued mechPiston commands of sp1=3000 and sp2=2500 to compensate. On this move we got a SOP error complaining that actuator C on sp1 didn't move, and the move actually done on B was only 1000 out of the requested 3000 (actuator A seemed to have moved the full distance). To fix it, we sent moves to the actuators individually and that seemed to work. The resulting preCalib flat gave yellow XSIGMAs in SoS but nothing in red; in the interest of finishing this plate tonight, we carried on rather than trying to further refine the focus. The move we did in focus was conservative relative to the temperature difference, for we were trying to avoid the very effect -- actuators not moving in lockstep -- that happened anyway. :-( Easily finished this plate in one 1200 s exposure. 11:45Z Closed up shop for the night. endNight rejoiced... ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End Begin End Frame ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5241 23:52Z 23:58Z 100 O -94.43 -92.90 22 ignore 5242 00:12Z 01:08Z 100 O -89.38 -75.47 101 ignore 5243 01:28Z 02:13Z 100 O -70.38 -59.20 89 ignore ---=== IMAGING RUN DETAILS ===--- ---=== SKIPPY RESULTS ===--- Run Frame nFrames stars muErr muRms nuErr nuRms rot az el --------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== LTMATCH RESULTS ===--- Run Field nFields alt az nGood rowMean rowSig colMean colSig rot ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== SPECTROSCOPY DATA SUMMARY ===--- Summary Checked (y/n): yes QA Procedures Done (y/n): yes UT Exp Time flavor comment (S/N)^2 totals ========================================== b1 r1 b2 r2 ----- sequence 31886, plate -9999 ------- 23:48 31886 0.0 bias 00:04 31887 0.0 bias 00:09 31888 0.0 bias ----- sequence 31888, plate 1400 ------- 00:18 31889 10.0 flat collimation check 00:20 31890 2.0 arc collimation check 00:23 31891 2.1 arc collimation check 00:25 31892 2.1 arc collimation check 08:28 31893 10.0 flat 08:30 31894 2.0 arc 10:41 31895 10.0 flat 10:44 31896 2.0 arc 11:02 31897 10.0 flat 11:05 31898 2.0 arc 11:33 31899 1200.2 target 7.9 7.3 8.8 8.3 DONE (w/ previous signal) ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE I ===--- Time Instrument Az Alt Rot Scale pos offset pos offset pos offset ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 11:11Z 9 1400 251.49 0.0001 65.24 -0.0015 88.75 0.0091 0.999900 ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE II ===--- ---=== DATA TAPE SUMMARY ===--- Goes: JL8452 Stays: JL8453 ---=== FOCUS LOG ===--- setmir piston Temp Wind Time Inst scale M1 M2 Foc Az Alt (C) MPH Dir filt fwhm ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 11:13Z 9 1400 0.99990 988 2359 400 252 64.8 -5.5 12 276 -- 1.8 ---=== WEATHER LOG ===--- Wind Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust DIMM Sky 23:43Z 47 12 37 270 (W) 5740 - 00:14Z 47 13 34 251 (WSW) 4317 - 00:44Z 45 13 22 271 (W) 4763 - 01:15Z 41 14 33 255 (WSW) 5986 - partly cloudy 01:45Z 40 14 24 265 (W) 5656 - 02:03Z 39 15 18 268 (W) 5872 - 02:33Z 37 16 22 267 (W) 11575 - 03:03Z 34 18 28 271 (W) 25767 - MstlyCldy 03:33Z 32 20 17 273 (W) 11868 - 04:04Z 31 21 18 293 (WNW) 14932 - 04:34Z 30 20 22 293 (WNW) 9198 - Overcast 05:04Z 30 19 19 284 (WNW) 4575 - 05:36Z 30 18 19 291 (WNW) 5259 - 06:07Z 29 17 17 295 (WNW) 5223 - 06:39Z 28 14 11 271 (W) 1805 - 07:11Z 28 14 23 284 (WNW) 1818 - 07:44Z 27 10 22 255 (WSW) 1477 - 08:16Z 27 2 20 264 (W) 927 - PtlyCldy 08:47Z 26 4 19 263 (W) 952 - 09:19Z 25 5 24 289 (WNW) 1002 - 09:51Z 25 4 18 266 (W) 844 - 10:24Z 23 6 19 298 (WNW) 899 - MstlyClr 10:57Z 22 7 17 307 (NW) 758 - 11:28Z 21 7 14 288 (WNW) 865 - Clear 11:58Z 21 8 14 295 (WNW) 962 - ---=== TELESCOPE STATUS ===--- 06:50Z Fans on, louvers open 07:25Z Doors open, spectro dewars force-filled 10:17Z Enclosure off 11:45Z Enclosure on, fans off, spectro dewars force-filled Telescope parked at 121,30 with Cart 2 (Plate 2105) mounted Counterweights at 270 No interlocks bypassed Spectro autofill reconnected Dewar weights at 12:15Z Imager: 273lbs 25psi Spectro: 161lbs 27psi ---=== SOFTWARE USED ===--- IOP/SOP: v3_143_1 Watcher: v2_30_0 MCP: v5_26_0 TPM: tpm_v2_47_0 AstroDa: v14_47 TCC: TCC 2.7.2.1 August 6 2004 sdssProcedures: v1_98 SoS: v4_10_7 hoggPT: v1_6_9 plate-mapper: v4_3_1 ---=== MIRROR NUMBERS ===--- PRIMARY: -------- Scale: 1.000000 MIGS TONIGHT NOMINAL Axial A 0.5750 0.5770 Axial B 0.5840 0.5880 Axial C 0.9430 0.9460 Trans D -8.2000 -8.1960 Lateral E 10.0457 10.0330 Lateral F 11.6078 11.5951 GALILS Commanded: 4300. -1900. 2850. -13300. -7600. -7650.
