APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Saturday May 14, 2005 (MJD 53505) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Swing: Dan Long Night: Jurek Krzesinski Atsuko Nitta Phone: Wendell Jordan Jon Brinkmann Hercules Support: Extra Fancy Kona Coffee from Sugai Farm ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Shake shake shake ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- Shake up Imager monthly bias and flat data taken and checked. All is well. Attempt to get Staring imager calibration (Mamoru calibration), but goStare failed after successfully taking 4 frames. It then took 1.5 hrs to recover. The moral of our experience is: No data obtained due to bad weather. If ever in doubt, reboot reboot reboot. This was Atsuko's last shake night. :) ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Afternoon: ---------- The / partition on host filled, with the symptom being that I was unable to open a window on host, and if I ssh'd from another machine host didn't recognize "setup". Craig cleared some space and all was well after a second reboot. No other problems with the afternoon check save increasingly large cumulus clouds building nearby. Spectrograph focus checked but not changed. Still set for about 11 C. Details in the problems section. Night: ------ We start with imager bias and flats. Cart 6 Plate 1827 ------------------- guide stars on gotoField. It is getting cloudier. If we cannot get science, we will have to close for Mamoru's calib data. Our efficiency was very low (in teens) and therefore we decided to close and do Mamoru's calibrations. 04:20Z Closed. NOTE: On 53459 March 29, 2005, Jurek and JCB got the QE r1 data. The science plan for this dark run says to take data for r1, but we will not do QE r1 since we got the data in March and start with QE u2 data taking. Or was the data Jurek and JCB got not good? We tried to setup and do imager calibration, but digital encoder display for the stage position is not working. 05:15Z We called Wendell. And then JB. And then French. Jurek and Wendell and JB talked over the phone. JB remembered a power switch for the encoder that is on the upper right corner of the power supply. Although the power supply is on, it goes into stand-by mode. Then we have to press this button to bring it back to life. French has a plan to replace the flaky encoder and will do so very soon (like this bright time). 05:30Z Fans off due to high humidity. 07:08Z iop which was taking the calibration data hung. We waited for about 10min, but no message, nothing. Control-C did not have any effect. We had to kill the iop. we resume from different iop window. It looks like goStare no longer works. It hangs without any messages. We kill the iop session running goStare again. We can do "cc imstat" to make sure we are able to talk to the camera. Yes we can. We relabelled the tapes and tried to do a drift bias (which is what are suppose to do after we finish with calibration data taking to go back to normal operation), but the drift never started. goDrift also hangs after the message below. im> goDrift -bias camera not setup for drifting, performing an initData We kill the iop again and decided to reboot the DAs. We make sure that DA is happy via watcher and archReadSense. We then started another bias drift which hung again. At this point, we decided to switch off the calibration lamp. We know the shutters has been closed via imstat. So there should have been no danger. We then decided to re-reboot the DA. After all, it took 2 reboots yesterday to get the sp1 mechanicals happy. Maybe the DA like more than one reboot. No. :( We still cannot drift. 08:35Z In desperation, we rebooted host. Guess what -- it worked. We can drift again!!!!! Maybe it was the servers that were confused? Or was it host? At any rate, it took us an hour and a half to "recover". "If ever in doubt, reboot reboot reboot." We have less than 2 hours before twilight starts. We give up on getting any more calibration data. Hail started to come down around 09:45Z. endNight ran happily on cloudy tapes. ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End Begin End Frame ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5334 21:18Z 22:05Z 100 O -98.58 -86.87 92 ignore 5335 02:01Z 02:32Z 100 O -27.68 -19.71 67 bias 5336 02:37Z 02:56Z 100 O -18.61 -13.88 45 calibration 5339 08:45Z 09:01Z 100 O 73.63 77.78 42 ignore ---=== IMAGING RUN DETAILS ===--- ---=== SKIPPY RESULTS ===--- Run Frame nFrames stars muErr muRms nuErr nuRms rot az el --------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== LTMATCH RESULTS ===--- Run Field nFields alt az nGood rowMean rowSig colMean colSig rot ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== SPECTROSCOPY DATA SUMMARY ===--- Summary Checked (y/n): QA Procedures Done (y/n): UT Exp Time flavor comment (S/N)^2 totals ========================================== b1 r1 b2 r2 ----- sequence 32764, plate -9999 ------- 00:18 32764 0.0 bias 01:32 32765 0.0 bias ----- sequence 32766, plate 1827 ------- 04:11 32766 10.0 flat 04:14 32767 2.0 arc ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE I ===--- Time Instrument Az Alt Rot Scale pos offset pos offset pos offset ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE II ===--- ---=== DATA TAPE SUMMARY ===--- Goes: JL Stays: JL ---=== FOCUS LOG ===--- setmir piston Temp Wind Time Inst scale M1 M2 Foc Az Alt (C) MPH Dir filt fwhm ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== WEATHER LOG ===--- Wind Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust DIMM Sky 21:58Z 60 31 10 223 (SW) 1010 - Partly Cloudy 22:30Z 57 31 8 243 (WSW) 1076 - 23:03Z 57 31 11 196 (SSW) 1159 - 23:35Z 58 31 13 242 (WSW) 1064 - 00:07Z 60 28 6 252 (WSW) 1071 - 00:55Z 58 29 11 233 (SW) 1025 - 01:28Z 55 29 2 241 (WSW) 1028 - 02:00Z 51 31 8 84 (E) 1217 - 02:32Z 49 27 8 90 (E) 1287 - 03:04Z 49 31 9 82 (E) 1331 - 03:35Z 50 31 4 92 (E) 1320 - 04:05Z 53 31 0 258 (WSW) 1167 - 04:37Z 54 30 4 264 (W) 1284 - 05:07Z 47 31 11 77 (ENE) 1362 - 05:37Z 45 41 11 77 (ENE) 1474 - 06:07Z 45 42 13 78 (ENE) 1659 - 06:37Z 45 42 13 75 (ENE) 1699 - 07:09Z 45 42 9 91 (E) 1767 - 07:39Z 44 42 11 109 (ESE) 1485 - 08:09Z 46 42 13 117 (ESE) 1646 - 09:15Z 46 45 17 151 (SSE) 1639 - 09:47Z 47 45 12 126 (SE) 1402 - ---=== TELESCOPE STATUS ===--- 01:00Z Fans on and imager mounted. 03:20Z Open 04:20Z Closed Telescope is at stow with cart on.
