APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Thursday May 26, 2005 (MJD 53517) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Steph Snedden (swing) Mike Harvanek Howard Brewington Scot Kleinman (by phone) ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Shakedown - night 1 ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- Threatening clouds, humidity and lightning kept us closed all night. All non-sky shake items were attempted. All non-sky shake items except imager calibrations were completed. Regarding imager calibrations: 1) How does one obtain current instructions for the procedure? 2) There were various discrepancies in settings/readings of the hardware and the instructions. See the log for details. 3) Jon Brinkmann: The stage encoder does not appear to be working (although operator error may be involved). Could you please check it (and also check that we returned the entire calibration system to its proper state). We have a new test version of iop/sop (v3_149_0) to correct a typo. It was not declared current because it was not tested on the sky (although the non-sky test was a seccess). The humidity readings on the tower and on the PT stairs were off by nearly a factor of 2 tonight (that on the PT stairs was about half that on the tower). Perhaps someone should have look. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Swing shift: ------------ A windbaffle amplifier was replaced today, which appears to have fixed the altitude motion problem noted in last night's log. The engineering camera is mounted, so there was no spectro focus check. The rest of afternoon checkout was trouble-free. Night: ------ Threatening clouds, humidity and lightning prevented us from opening so we did non-sky shake items. Changes to Procedures were verified. We verified that the PT flat field lamp had been changed. The scaleChange in the new iop/sop was tested. The scale change was applied and the new message appeared but an error window popped up each of the 5 times we tested it. The traceback is in the Problems section. We called Scot Kleinman. He fixed it (v3_149_0) and we tested it again. The new messages appeared, the scale change was applied correctly and no error windows popped up. The new iop/sop appears to work. French called and wanted us to test telescope altitude motion. We went down to 6 degrees and back up to 90 twice without incident. We also slewed in azimuth from 180 to 75 without trouble. We attempted imager calibrations but had many problems. For starters, why is it so difficult to get a current set of instructions? Howard and Mike both followed the procedure in "Using sdssTests" and got 2 different sets of instructions. After attempting to use the instructions, we found that neither set was correct. After talking to John Barentine, he loaned us his instructions but could not remember how/where he had obtained them. Could someone please remind us how to obtain the most recent set of instructions for this procedure? Following John's instructions we determined that there were indeed problems with the system. We suspected there were problems when using the previous sets of instructions but when we found those instructions to be blatantly wrong, we were unsure. We found no obvious errors in John's instructions but the problems remained. When we powered up the QTH supply, it was set to 10 V, 4 A. The instructions said to "set the voltage per the table below" but we found no table. The instructions also recommended 20 V for most observations but the note on the QTH supply said 22 V. We set it to 22 V (6 A) and proceeded. Next we checked the linear supply. It was reading .18 A and 4 V but the values taped on the supply were 0.02 A and 4 V (and another current associated with 15 V). Since there was a factor of 9 discrepancy in the current reading and no mention of how to adjust it (not to mention we had no way of knowing which was correct), we left it as it was and proceeded. Next, we put the battery in the encoder and reset it. We then moved the hand-cranked stage but the encoder continued to read zero. We moved the stage all the way forward and backward but the encoder still read zero. We were unsure if the problem was with the encoder or the operators so we continued on anyway. We got the monochro scanner set up and the wavelength set correctly but we were unsure how to read or set the micrometers for the slit widths. At this point we realized we could not continue without help. However, it was 08:30Z and even if we called Jon Brinkmann and he could answer our questions and solve our problems immediately, it would still be too late to obtain QE data for u2 (the shake/science plan needs to be updated). We believe we returned the system to its original state. endNight was run onto cloudy night tapes. The humidity reading on the PT stairs was about half that of the tower for much of the night. Perhaps someone should have a look. ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End Begin End Frame ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5341 22:56Z 23:13Z 100 O -62.28 -57.94 42 ignore ---=== IMAGING RUN DETAILS ===--- ---=== SKIPPY RESULTS ===--- Run Frame nFrames stars muErr muRms nuErr nuRms rot az el --------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== LTMATCH RESULTS ===--- Run Field nFields alt az nGood rowMean rowSig colMean colSig rot ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== SPECTROSCOPY DATA SUMMARY ===--- Summary Checked (y/n): YES QA Procedures Done (y/n): NO UT Exp Time flavor comment (S/N)^2 totals ========================================== b1 r1 b2 r2 ----- sequence 32842, plate -9999 ------- 23:27 32842 0.0 bias 23:31 32843 0.0 bias 23:34 32844 0.0 bias 02:47 32845 0.0 bias ----- sequence 32846, plate -9999 ------- 04:59 32846 0.0 bias 05:03 32847 0.0 bias 05:05 32848 0.0 bias ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE I ===--- Time Instrument Az Alt Rot Scale pos offset pos offset pos offset ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE II ===--- ---=== DATA TAPE SUMMARY ===--- Goes: None Stays: None ---=== FOCUS LOG ===--- setmir piston Temp Wind Time Inst scale M1 M2 Foc Az Alt (C) MPH Dir filt fwhm ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== WEATHER LOG ===--- Wind Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust DIMM Sky 22:39Z 65 31 9 265 (W) 666 - 23:11Z 62 44 4 203 (SSW) 515 - 23:44Z 62 49 6 215 (SW) 549 - 00:16Z 60 48 2 258 (WSW) 562 - 00:48Z 57 47 6 263 (W) 606 - 02:29Z 48 45 11 352 (NNW) 3179 - cloudy 03:01Z 48 45 18 33 (NNE) 1705 - cloudy 03:45Z 49 36 21 24 (NNE) 728 - cloudy 04:17Z 50 37 20 25 (NNE) 354 - cloudy 05:13Z 49 37 6 7 (N) 292 - cloudy 05:43Z 50 22 11 305 (NW) 332 - cloudy 06:13Z 49 28 3 211 (SSW) 362 - cloudy 06:43Z 48 35 7 106 (ESE) 503 - cloudy 07:15Z 49 38 12 161 (SSE) 1003 - cloudy 07:45Z 47 44 16 128 (SE) 834 - cloudy 08:16Z 48 41 1 76 (ENE) 778 - cloudy 08:46Z 48 41 13 139 (SE) 715 - cloudy 09:16Z 47 43 14 121 (ESE) 693 - cloudy 09:46Z 47 42 17 126 (SE) 736 - cloudy ---=== TELESCOPE STATUS ===--- 01:15Z Enclosure doors opened, fans and blowers on, louvers opened. 02:00Z Doors closed, fans and blowers off, louvers closed (due to threatening clouds, high humidity and lightning).
