Problems: --------- skippy didn't want to run from iop for Jurek (who was a co-pilot on sdsscommish), because of the permission problem (see the log). Stripe 290 N - something is going wrong with this stripe (or or perhaps with us ?). The telescope was commanded to go to mu=306, but instead it went to mu=288. We ruled out bad pointing. Maybe some parameters for that stripe are wrong - could someone look at the problem please? (see the log for details). Half of our imaging runs (5381,5382,5384,5385) did not appear automatically in the Imaging Run Summary in the log. We filled in some of the details in this section by hand. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Swing shift: ----------- No problems with afternoon checkout. Az brakes cleared normally. DIMM: Based on last night's log, I guessed we had a VNC server failure at the DIMM laptop. That turned out to be the case, and I restarted the VNC server. This seems to be happening more frequently, and Craig should no doubt be consulted. A second DIMM problem reported last night sounds like the telescope connection was lost for some unknown reason. I reseated all the relevant connections between telescope and computer. We'll see if it helps. Spectro tilt adjusted. Focus adjusted to my best guess at what night time temperatures will be. Details at the end of the log. Night: ------ We mounted imager at the evening and took bias on the telescope 35 minutes after the sun set. run 5380 - bias on the telescope. run 5381 Stripe 17 N. The ramp begins at lambda -24, frame: 45, 6 minutes before the twilight end. Skippy is happy, we are in focus, seeing is good. 04:15Z Watcher error: no gang transfer (77: 2005-06-05 04:13:27Z) id:3,4,5 The teamster was forced, which fixed the problem. Frame 207, lambda 0 end of the science, frame 219, lambda 2 end of the ramp. 05:29Z Run 5382 Stripe 17 S, in focus scince the beginning, seeing good, skippy ok. Lambda -2, frame 15 beginning of the ramp. lambda 18, frame 150 end of the ramp. 06:55Z Stripe 290 N, we sent the telescope to: scanStripe 290 N -mu 306. But the telescope moved to mu 288 !!! We reissued the scanstripe command, but the telescope wants to stay at 288 (according to tccmon). We goDrifted to see what skippy will say. Skippy did not run on this stripe (see the problem section for the murmur error messages). Then we noticed that we tried to scan that stripe 1 hour too early, as for mu 306, so we ended the drift and tried stripe 290 N from mu 278. Again, the telescope was moved 8 degrees short (270). Something wrong with the pointing? Mike (who still was on the site) suggested to move the telescope on one of the stripes with which we did not have problems on the previous night. We did. The telescope was moved where it was commanded to. SOMETHING IS GOING WRONG with the stripe 290 N. Since we couldn't figure out what it might be and we did not know were we are pointing we decided to move on but on the stripe we knew, that all will work (unfortunately we lost 30 minutes of the science time just trying to set on 290 N). Run 5383 - ignore. 07:23Z Run 5384 stripe 1020 S. In focus since the beginning, seeing good. skippy ok. Start of the ramp at mu 249, frame 14. Science ends at mu 277 and the ramp ends at mu 279, frame: 214. When we finished the altitude was 33.7 deg. 08:31Z It seems, that our night planning did not went very well tonight when we got into the problem with the stripe 290 N and we ended up having 45 minutes left till twilight at this point. Since that is too short for main stripe scanning, we decided to fill up the holes in SDSS imaging: 09:34Z Run 5385, the hole in the stripe 36 S, lambda 22, frame 15 beginning of the ramp. Skippy happy, in focus, good seeing. 2 deg hole done, lambda 27, frame 48 the end of the ramp. 10:01Z We setup for another hole: run 5386, stripe 37 N. When the telescope got there we started goDrift, and at the same time we pushed the telscope 0.5 closer to the ramp (just to save a couple minutes of the dark time, which we desperately needed) then we saw the folowing error message: 2005-06-05 10:00:52Z: idReport: problem in calcStripeParams, setting many params to NaN. Error was: Syntax Error: expected floating-point positional parameter for "" but got "NaN" USAGE: eqToGC -node -inclination -help continuing with idReport anyway So maybe reslewing the telescope while starting the goDrift wasn't good idea after all. Could someone confirm that what we done got us into the problem please? We ended the drift run 5386 - ignore. 10:10Z Next hole in the SDSS data: run 5387 stripe 37 N, in focus, skippy happy, seeing good. Lambda 31, frame 9 beginning of the ramp. Lambda 33.5 frame 26, twilight begins. Lambda 34, frame 29 (2 minutes after twilight) the end of science.
