APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Saturday July 9, 2005 (MJD 53561) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Scot Kleinman Atsuko Nitta Kleinman Visitors: Jon Brinkmann and his family. ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- SDSS-II Science! ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- The Weather God seems to think we need to get more calibration data. We got QE data for r1, u2, uLeak u4 completed while we wathced the clouds pass overhead. We hope the Weather God will let us image tomorrow night. Dan -- can you ask your Weather God Father for a photometric, subarcsec seeing night? Sir Robert -- surely you know how to perform miracles. Would you get us a imaging quality sky tomorrow night? We are prepared to change the imager dewar once we awaken tomorrow. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Since the weather did not look like we can open usefully right after sunset, Scot decided to start taking imager calibration data. We start with r1 QE measurements. 04:20Z r1 QE completed. We cannot decide if the weather will improve or not. So we started taking data on u2 QE. 05:00Z Opened the cloud camera. 06:25Z Finished u2. On to uLeak4 since it is still cloudy. 07:20Z The sky is clearing. We have no pri3 plates and we are in the middle of taking the uleak data. This is the first time we are gettin uleak data since we replaced the diode brought by JPG last month. It is important to gather the uleak data to compare with the data we gathered with the old diode. So we decided to finish taking the uleak data. 08:00Z Clouds are starting to come back again. While taking uleak data, we got: critical errors on "archiver, id4, pullFullFrame" and "archiver, id4, pollFullGang". We did nothing and the error did not return. 08:20Z We are very clouded again. 08:45Z We finished uLeak4. We do not have enough time to do another set of calibration. So we put the imager back to normal operation mode. 09:40Z We gave up and put the telescope to bed. endNight had a minor problem. We first issued endNight without any options. When we were asked which runs to archive, we answered [] which we thought will be taken as no runs to archive. But this made endNight create files called [].astro.astrolog and [].photo.astrolog instead of .astro.astrolog and .photo.astrolog. This caused endNight to fail. We next tried, endNight -doTpm and got the error message, Error: /astrolog/53561/.astro.archlog - No such file or directory So we created one with nothing in it and reran endNight. This time, endNight wanted a .photo.archlog. So we created one and all was almot well -- it wanted us about ioptape.archlog. Since we have no data that needs to be saved tonight, it does not matter if ioptape.archlog is not quite right. Looking at ioptape.archlog, we could not see anything that was obviously wrong. imager dewar has 180lb left. This will allow us to do 2 fills before the dewar weight drops below 100lb. Since the last fill was at 09:30Z, we should be up to replace the dewar so that it will not do a fill from a dewar with less than 100lb. Here are the details on the calibration data. A copy of the following has been sent to the calibration mailing list. tbars unlatched Wavelength set on the negative side First bias attempt I forgot the Msp suffix and just did a goStare- it failed with: Error: Syntax Error: unprocessed command line parameters remain (check for extra parameters or invalid options) ftclParseArg: Error parsing the command USAGE: endStare [imageName] -abort -pause -read -force -daqWait -noIncrSeq -timeout -timing -dropCameraConnection -dropMechConnection -help Proper goStareMSP next worked fine. r1 Run 5439 ------- Frame: Type 1 -init bias 2 bias 3 dark 4 dark 5 dark START getQeCCD r 1 6 bias - noted odd-even effect 7 5s dark - ditto 8 600nm 5s: 16300 ADU 9 594 5: 15700 10 588 5: 15200 11 582 5: 14400 12 576 5: 13400 13 570 5: 11700 14 564 5: 8700 15 558 5: 5400 16 558 5s dark: 1800 17 552 80s dark: 1800 18 552 36: 7900 19 546 36: 2300 20 543 80: 2250 21 549 60: 4800 22 555 30: 13300 23 555 80s dark: 1800 24 561 5 dark: 1800 25 561 5: 7000 26 567 5: 10000 02:55: JB enters enclosure and turns on indirect lights (with permission, of course) 27 573 5: 12600 28 579 5: failed- looks like a dark 29 610 5: 16500 30 620 5: 16800 31 630 5: 17300 32 640 5: 17600 33 650 5: 17800 34 656 5: 17700 35 662 5: 17700 36 668 5: 17000 37 674 5: 14000 - slightly different illumination pattern , perhaps 38 674 5s dark: 1800 39 680 100s dark: 1800 40 680 10: 14800 - similar illumination pattern as frame 37 41 686 50: 22500 - ditto 03:32 the crew exists the enclosure - lights back off 42 701 100: 5200 - slightly different illumination pattern again 43 695 80: 8000 - similar to above 44 689 60: 15000 - ditto 45 683 30: 23500 - ditto 46 683 100s dark: 1800 47 677 5s dark: 1800 48 677 5: 11000 49 671 5: 16000 50 665 5: 17500 51 665 5s dark: 1800 52 665 0s bias: 1800 All Done!
