APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Wednesday September 7, 2005 (MJD 53621) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- swing: Jurek Krzesinski night: Howard Brewington, Mike Harvanek Kaike Pan sn: Rick Kessler support: Eric Neilsen visitors: Tanya Van Bergen (AMNH - American Museum of Natural History) Len Siegfried (AMNH) Jason Lelchuk (AMNH) ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Supernova science! ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- High humidity or clouds all night. We never opened. We trained Kaike on the removal of a spectro cartridge and corrector and on the mounting of the imager. We tested the DA by taking 25 spectro biases while running a 222 frame imager bias. There were a few watcher errors (see the log) but everything seemed to work normally. The tpm dewpoint DP and humidity were vastly different from that reported by the 3.5 m catwalk sensor. PR 6604 was filed against the tpm. We found compressor #2 to be offline at around 07:55Z and we restarted it. We checked out DIMM. It worked but there were a few minor problems (see the log for details). We switched the grade 5 N2 over to the other bottle so now there is one empty bottle and one in-use bottle. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Afternoon checkout: ------------------- imager checked with a bias drift, spectrographs were fine (in focus), guider ok. There was a problem with mirrors values not checking in the night log. Eric was called and he solved the problem by recompiling iop. The problem was with Kurt's new DA code passing information into the murmurlog and interfering with the way logTool was getting the information from the murmur. After recompiling the iop and cleaning the murmur, everything was working again. Telescope ready. night: ------ High humidity stopped ventilation at 01:30Z and delayed opening. While waiting for the conditions to improve we mounted the imager and took an on-telescope bias. We trained Kaike on dismounting the cartridge and corrector and mounting the imager. During the on-telescope bias we got the following archiver errors in watcher: (sorry, missed which id number these errors were for) dsc E archWrFail Error archiving frame 5576 5.24: Failed to close file 13 (dsc_E_archWrFail Error archiving frame 5576 5.24: Failed to close file 13 : 2005-09-08 03:36:23Z ) TEXTONLY *** FATAL *** dscArch: While writing frames - 1 (TEXTONLY *** FATAL *** dscArch: While writing frames - 1 : 2005-09-08 03:36:23Z ) and again id3's archiver and tape drives TEXTONLY *** FATAL *** dscArch: While writing frames - 1 (TEXTONLY *** FATAL *** dscArch: While writing frames - 1 : 2005-09-08 04:36:04Z ) dsc E archWrFail Error archiving frame 5576 105.23: Failed to close file 13 (dsc_E_archWrFail Error archiving frame 5576 105.23: Failed to close file 13 : 2005-09-08 04:36:04Z ) To test the new DA code, we let the on-telescope bias run for 222 frames. While the imager bias was running we also took 25 spectro biases. There were no problems other than the watcher errors noted above. There was a significant discrepancy in the dew point DP and the humidity reported by the tpm vs. that reported by the sensor on the 3.5 m catwalk. The PT sensor was reporting 46% humidity and an 11 degree split while the 3.5 m catwalk was reporting 85% humidity and a 2 degree split. We walked around outside and inspected cars, railings, doors, etc. and found the cars and the DIMM dome to be dripping while everything else was dry. The air smelled wet and felt wet compared the air in the enclosure which was at 71% humidity. Thus, we believed the 3.5 m catwalk reading to be correct. Although we aren't sure if this is a hardware or software problem, a PR (6604) was filed against the tpm. Since the tpm software was changed today, we figured this was a logical place to start. Also note that there was a discrepancy in the windspeed and direction (1 mph, 108 degrees - tpm vs. 12 mph, 121 degrees - tower) but this could be caused by the enclosure partially sheltering the tpm wind sensor. We checked compressor #2 around 07:55Z and found it to be offline. We restarted it as per Mark's instructions. The humidity started dropping and around 08:40Z we considered opening. However, a check of the sky showed most of the southern half to be covered in a fair amount of clouds. We started ventilating and while we waited for the sky to improve we checked out the DIMM. DIMM appeared to work normally but we noted the following problems: the cover opened slowly and the air pressure seemed low; the laser pointer had been left on and the batteries are dead; we could not open a VNC window on monx3. However, we were able to obtain seeing measurements and the data were being accepted by the web page. The DIMM cover closed at a normal speed. The clouds continued to be a problem in the southern part of the sky. We could not see El Paso at all and were concerned that the clouds contained virga. Stars were coming and going overhead and often we could not see even 1st magnitude stars. So, we decided against opening. We switched the grade 5 N2 over to the other bottle so now there is one empty bottle and one in-use bottle rather than one full bottle and one in-use bottle. endNight finished. ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End Begin End Frame ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5576 03:33Z 05:42Z 100 O 109.84 142.25 223 bias on-telescope ---=== IMAGING RUN DETAILS ===--- ---=== SKIPPY RESULTS ===--- Run Frame nFrames stars muErr muRms nuErr nuRms rot az el --------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== LTMATCH RESULTS ===--- Run Field nFields alt az nGood rowMean rowSig colMean colSig rot ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== SPECTROSCOPY DATA SUMMARY ===--- Summary Checked (y/n): YES QA Procedures Done (y/n): NO UT Exp Time flavor comment (S/N)^2 totals ========================================== b1 r1 b2 r2 ----- sequence 33893, plate -9999 ------- 01:52 33893 0.0 bias ----- sequence 33894, plate 2256 ------- 04:49 33894 0.0 bias DA testing 04:51 33895 0.0 bias 04:53 33896 0.0 bias 04:55 33897 0.0 bias 04:57 33898 0.0 bias 05:00 33899 0.0 bias 05:02 33900 0.0 bias 05:04 33901 0.0 bias 05:06 33902 0.0 bias 05:08 33903 0.0 bias 05:10 33904 0.0 bias 05:12 33905 0.0 bias 05:14 33906 0.0 bias 05:16 33907 0.0 bias 05:18 33908 0.0 bias 05:20 33909 0.0 bias 05:22 33910 0.0 bias 05:24 33911 0.0 bias 05:26 33912 0.0 bias 05:28 33913 0.0 bias 05:30 33914 0.0 bias 05:32 33915 0.0 bias 05:34 33916 0.0 bias 05:36 33917 0.0 bias 05:38 33918 0.0 bias ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE I ===--- Time Instrument Az Alt Rot Scale pos offset pos offset pos offset ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE II ===--- ---=== DATA TAPE SUMMARY ===--- Goes: JL Stays: JL ---=== FOCUS LOG ===--- setmir piston Temp Wind Time Inst scale M1 M2 Foc Az Alt (C) MPH Dir filt fwhm ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== WEATHER LOG ===--- Wind Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust DIMM Sky 00:41Z 55 46 13 111 (ESE) -9999 - high cirrus 01:48Z 52 46 14 83 (E) -9999 - high cirrus 02:21Z 51 46 14 85 (E) -9999 - high cirrus 02:53Z 51 44 16 86 (E) -9999 - high cirrus 03:25Z 51 43 14 79 (E) -9999 - high cirrus 03:57Z 50 45 14 81 (E) -9999 - high cirrus 04:29Z 50 46 20 109 (ESE) -9999 - high cirrus 05:02Z 49 46 14 109 (ESE) -9999 - high cirrus 05:34Z 49 46 17 112 (ESE) -9999 - high cirrus 06:06Z 49 46 13 103 (ESE) -9999 - high cirrus 06:38Z 49 46 17 113 (ESE) -9999 - high cirrus 07:10Z 49 45 7 114 (ESE) -9999 - high cirrus 07:42Z 49 43 7 101 (E) -9999 - high cirrus 08:15Z 50 43 7 115 (ESE) -9999 - some clouds 08:47Z 51 42 1 87 (E) -9999 - clouds 09:19Z 52 42 3 218 (SW) -9999 - clouds 09:51Z 53 43 5 205 (SSW) -9999 - clouds 10:23Z 52 43 2 211 (SSW) -9999 - clouds 10:56Z 53 44 0 260 (W) -9999 - clouds 11:28Z 52 43 0 229 (SW) -9999 - clouds ---=== TELESCOPE STATUS ===--- 00:30Z Enclosure doors opened, fans and blowers on, louvers opened. 01:30Z Doors closed, fans and blowers off, louvers closed (humidity). 08:40Z Enclosure doors opened, fans and blowers on, louvers opened. 11:15Z Doors closed, fans and blowers off, louvers closed.
