APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Tuesday September 27, 2005 (MJD 53641) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Swing: John Barentine Night: Dan Long Howard Brewington Support: Steph Snedden Jon Brinkmann Fritz Stauffer French Leger Eric Neilsen (phone) ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Science! ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- 82N, 115 to 123 (superNova) 79S, 126 to 160 79S, 176 to -164 Oblique scan, TRACK 32.5000, -7.0000 FK5 /SCANVELOCITY=(0.00000000,0.00417807) 82N, -167 to -131 (superNova) Seeing imagingDetails for more information. We had a problem with files not being transfered from the pool to files1; see log for more information. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Afternoon --------- We started the day with 26% free space (28 GB) on sdsshost2:/home and 20% free space (275 GB) on sdssfiles1:/data1/data. Removed frames in MJD53620- There was a problem starting a doghouse bias related to file permissions. See Problems section. Also an apparent archiver problem wasn't actually a problem, and grabInst failed on spectro focus check. See said Problems section. Night ----- 00:50Z Mounted the imager at sunset and did an on-telescope bias in dark enclosure; run was #5653. 01:41Z Started Run #5654 superNova, 82N -startLambda 115 03:02Z At frame 163 on superNova Run #5654, we had a problem with id4. The scrolling display stop, and id4 seemed to reboot itself. So, we ended the drift and rebooted the photo-2 crate. 03:18Z Since conditions were now photometric, we moved to a Segue stripe, viz., 79S. See imagingDetails for more information. 05:50Z We finished 79S, -startMu 126 -endMu 160. 05:55Z We moved to 79S, -startMu 176 -endMu -164 07:40Z We did the oblique scan; the last few minutes of data were taken as the moon was rising. Yet, we think the data is probably okay. TRACK 32.5000, -7.0000 FK5 /SCANVELOCITY=(0.00000000,0.00417807) 08:30Z We went back to 82N for more superNova data. During the last frames of this run, watcher let us know that no files were being transfered from the pool to files1. As we investigated, we discovered that this transfer problem had existed from the start of the night. However, watcher did not complain until the pool was full. We tried the copyUnstoredFilesInIdReport command, but it did not work either. It was photo-one data that was not being transfered. We called Eric Neilsen, and he suggested that we create the directories on files1 for the photo files, which worked. We estimated that the transfer will take about six-hours to complete. So, we left it running and went to bed. And, by the way, we could not run endNight becuase of this problem. When we mailed the runLogs, we discovered that there was no information in the file: runlog-5654.txt Although we tried the makeRunLog [mjd4Gang] 5654 command, we were unsuccessful. We mentioned this in the runLog email. ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End Begin End Frame ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5652 22:18Z 00:46Z 100 O 50.63 87.71 262 ignore 5653 00:48Z 01:10Z 100 O 88.14 93.77 51 bias 5654 01:41Z 03:03Z 82 N 104.02 124.58 150 science 5655 03:12Z 05:52Z 79 S 122.34 162.42 281 science 5656 05:54Z 07:37Z 79 S 173.34 -160.85 186 science 5657 07:39Z 08:31Z 206 O -152.50 -152.50 99 calibration 5658 08:34Z 11:16Z 82 N -169.81 -128.97 286 science ---=== IMAGING RUN DETAILS ===--- Run 5653: Bias, T-bars unlatched, on telescope, in darkened enclosure ++++++++++++++++++++++++ Run 5654: Science, 82N, Supernova -startLambda 115 -endLambda 123 There was a at least two-lambda ramps on each end of scan Started the run ~40 min before 18 deg twilight to get set up and hit the ramp at 18 deg twilight. Only "observer" may do this as permissions are currently set as such and observer owns nearly every directory off /data. Fritz changed the group permissions on /data to enable individual users to create /data/astro/MJD, etc., directories. We will wait a day to test whether a user other than observer can now create the subdirectories, since /data/astro/53641 now contains data (the bias Run 5652 started as observer) and we don't want to delete that. But we think the problem is both understood and solved. Archiver Hijacked By endNight? ------------------------------ During the problem of trying to get a doghouse bias up and running, before any data were taken, we found that the archiver state read "Busy" with the position listed as "890" for each node in watcher. Status information in iop with a "iccExec [photoList] statusDump archState" read e.g.: NAME ACCESS TYPE VALUE LOW HIGH DESCRIPTION ------------------ ------------- ----- -------- -------- -------- ------------------------- archState pub r mur Archiver writing Current state 1 Status entries found We think this relates to the trouble with endNight last night (MJD 53640), particularly the nightlog comment "The queue was left as is in case someone wants to try and figure out why archiving didn't resume when the archiver claimed to be writing." In any case, the queue shows nothing now, and gangs for Run 5652 (the doghouse bias) are turning up on disk so we presume all is well....
