APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Saturday October 8, 2005 (MJD 53652) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Swing: John Barentine Night: Steph Snedden Kaike Pan ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Science! ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- Weather. Clouds, rain, lightning, humidity. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Afternoon --------- Right off the bat, the parent process of the spectro teamster appeared to have died ungracefully, and I had to kill it to get the teamster started again. see Problems section. No other trouble during checkout today. Night ----- The storm that was supposed to show up tomorrow night decided to arrive a day early. We started ventilating the building at sundown, but that was just to keep our spirits up. We closed back up during twilight as the rain approached. We never reopened. We mopped up water in both the upper and lower enclosures, especially along the west walls. Since there is more rain coming, no doubt there will be more water in the enclosure to greet the day crew. Because of the rain, we left the cart in the enclosure, opting to not get it wet by putting it back in the shed. ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End Begin End Frame ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5705 20:09Z 20:34Z 100 O 28.93 35.22 55 ignore ---=== IMAGING RUN DETAILS ===--- ---=== SKIPPY RESULTS ===--- Run Frame nFrames stars muErr muRms nuErr nuRms rot az el --------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== LTMATCH RESULTS ===--- Run Field nFields alt az nGood rowMean rowSig colMean colSig rot ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== SPECTROSCOPY DATA SUMMARY ===--- Summary Checked (y/n):n QA Procedures Done (y/n):n UT Exp Time flavor comment (S/N)^2 totals ========================================== b1 r1 b2 r2 ----- sequence 34200, plate -9999 ------- 20:19 34200 0.0 bias 20:28 34201 0.0 bias ----- sequence 34202, plate 2060 ------- spectro focus check 22:29 34202 10.0 flat 22:32 34203 2.0 arc 22:38 34204 2.1 arc 22:40 34205 2.1 arc 22:55 34206 2.1 arc 22:57 34207 2.1 arc ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE I ===--- Time Instrument Az Alt Rot Scale pos offset pos offset pos offset ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE II ===--- ---=== DATA TAPE SUMMARY ===--- Goes: JL Stays: JL ---=== FOCUS LOG ===--- setmir piston Temp Wind Time Inst scale M1 M2 Foc Az Alt (C) MPH Dir filt fwhm ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== WEATHER LOG ===--- Wind Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust DIMM Sky 20:04Z 57 32 12 276 (W) -9999 - cloudy 20:36Z 54 30 12 302 (WNW) -9999 - ' 21:07Z 56 34 14 301 (WNW) -9999 - ' 21:37Z 57 34 7 283 (WNW) -9999 - ' 22:09Z 58 35 11 269 (W) -9999 - ' 22:41Z 58 38 7 270 (W) -9999 - ' 01:42Z 49 41 11 215 (SW) -9999 - ' 02:14Z 48 43 13 222 (SW) -9999 - ' 02:46Z 48 44 13 212 (SSW) -9999 - ' 03:18Z 48 45 12 280 (W) -9999 - ' 03:50Z 46 42 16 266 (W) -9999 - ' 04:23Z 46 41 13 257 (WSW) -9999 - ' 04:55Z 44 43 24 229 (SW) -9999 - ' 05:27Z 42 43 22 228 (SW) -9999 - ' 05:59Z 42 42 21 188 (S) -9999 - ' 06:31Z 42 42 22 207 (SSW) -9999 - ' 07:03Z 43 42 13 183 (S) -9999 - ' 07:36Z 44 42 17 213 (SSW) -9999 - ' 08:08Z 44 41 9 151 (SSE) -9999 - ' 08:40Z 45 40 19 248 (WSW) -9999 - ' 09:12Z 44 42 16 228 (SW) -9999 - ' 09:44Z 41 41 15 235 (SW) -9999 - ' 10:16Z 43 41 17 234 (SW) -9999 - ' 10:49Z 43 42 16 242 (WSW) -9999 - ---=== TELESCOPE STATUS ===--- 00:08Z - Started ventilation. Attempting to restart Starting a new teamster; moving old one to the Meadowlands 2005-10-08 20:04:28Z: beginData has failed: Failed to kill old teamster, 3849 Error I tried issuing a "teamster 60 spectro -force" manually and got the same message about failing to kill the old teamster (poor Jimmy...), so I tried killing the evidently zombie teamster process, pid 3849. At that point the process was declared in a ps -a on 'host2. kill -9's didn't work to get rid of the process. So then I did a ps -ef to get both the PID and PPID, finding the latter to be 4488. Killed that, restarted my sop session, and was able to take a bias. It appears that in this case, killing the parent process was necessary to start a new teamster. Not predicted to be as cold tonight as it has been lately; lows are expected around 5 deg C, so I will focus for about 10 deg C. Everything would have been correct for the first go-round of goSpecFocus. That is, if I'd been paying attention.
