It looks as bad as it did four nights ago. Proceeded with M71 plates as there were questions regarding exposure times and the sp2 data might be useable. As suspected, some guide fibers have multiple stars Curiously guiding was most improved by disabling fiber 7 which was offset but not doubled. Exposure times of 1 minute for 2333 and 5 minutes for 2338 yielded peak counts of around 25000 to 30000 counts in the brightest fibers. Observed plates 2333 and 2338 under clear dark skies with good seeing. Unfortunately b1 fogging keeps this from being very useful. Switched to imaging (as clouds appear of course) so supernova imaging is done under nearly clear skies Run 5807 82 S 128 to -126 (includes ramps) Run 5808 82 N -136 to -126 (includes ramps) Gourmet Night: We were a bit busy during the festivities so I'm not sure exactly who attended and who made what but it was all very tasty once we got a chance to dine. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Afternoon: ----------- The afternoon checkout was uneventful; except, we had to restart the servers since we could not do a spectro grabInst. Because of this problem, there was not enough time to complete the spceFlats 15. However, we did check the spectro focus. It was in spec, so we made no adjustment. See Problems Section for focus numbers. Also see Problems Section for misc Watcher Messages. The SDSS camera bellows pressure was at 44-psi today. Night: ----------- plugMap files for 2333 not on host or host2. Copied them over from plate-mapper plugMapP files live in /home/plates plugMapM files live in /home/mapper/scan 00:30Z Opening 00:52Z Cartridge 4 2333 segcluster130 ( This is the extra bright M71 plate. FK5 at the edge of the fiber. Fiber 5 clearly has two stars but it seems to pick the bright one Fiber 7 has only one star but is way off center when 7 is disabled, neighboring fibers line up better so maybe 7 is a high proper motion star? 34478 was 2 second test exposure. Highest counts about 600 over bias 79 will be a one minute exposure. b1 flats showing fewer counts than b2 flats, by nearly a factor of 2 The b1 flat also looks "fuzzier" than b2. I don't know if this is a severe as the problem seen the other day, but there clearly is a difference between b1 and b2. One of the fibers on sp1 has counts of 33000 in one minute. Don't want to risk going into non-linear territory so going with 1 minute exposures. Note that b1 has about 400 counts over bias between fibers when b2 has less than 80 counts over bias between fibers. No pattern noise noticed in spectro biases with new switching power supply in the spectro autofill system asked for postCals 12 1 minute science exposures in total 02:32Z instChange 02:37Z Cartridge 8 2338 segcluster130 This is the regular bright M71 plate guide stars on slew Disabling 7 and 3 ( 7 is off center and 3 is extremely faint). 03:45Z Switching to imager since the high priority plates are past observability, and the current condition of b1 makes spectroscopy questionable at best. Some clouds starting to arrive --- looks like supernova imaging 04:05Z Run 5807 82 S between 128 and -126 (includes ramps) skippy happy from the start In focus by frame 18. Start of ramp frame 18 lambda 128, RA 313 Start of science frame 31, lambda 130, RA 315 Fantastic seeing, consistently around .8 in i' Occasional wisps of cirrus are keeping conditions just non-photometric but only just. Seeing excursion between frames 563 and 597 (lambda 210 - 215) end of science lambda -128 11:16Z ending the drift at frame 726. Still have cirrus, so SEGUE/Legacy out. 11:17Z Filling in the last 45 minutes with a bit of the end of 82 N as the only other choice is to take a bias and close for the night. Note that the elevation for this run is 27.2 Run 5808 82 N -136 to -126 skippy and focus good from the start. Despite the 2+ airmasses, seeing is in spec So if differential refraction doesn't missalign things too badly with the templates, this might be useable. end of science lambda -128 12:01Z ending drift
