APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Thursday December 8, 2005 (MJD 53713) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Kaike Pan Steph Snedden Mike Harvanek (swing) Viktor Malanushenko Olena Malanushenko Craig Loomis (support) ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Science! ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- Kaike, Viktor and Olena did all the work and Steph was watching. Evening - clear sky, after that the light cirruses were during all night. There were several technical MCP & tcc problems at the beginning and during the night. We were doing only spectroscopy: 4 plates are done and 2 plates are in progress. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Afternoon: ---------- Spectro collimation was checked but no adjustment was made. A postCal showed all the x/wsigma values to be in the black. Got the following error when ending the doghouse bias: im> endDrift 2005-12-08 22:40:26Z: Error stopping focus loop: couldn't open "/astrolog/53713/focus-53713.par": Permission denied However, the bias appeared to end normally. We couldn't talk to the spectro mechanicals starting around 23:35Z. Everything was okay earlier in the afternoon. Steph reset the sp1 mechanicals and this appeared to solve the problem. Note that the collimator positions for sp1 were reset as a result of this. There was no ventilation this afternoon because the enclosure was colder than the outside temperature. Nothing else to report. Night: ------ Some problems are happened at the start of the night. We had to reboot sp1 mechanicals and MCP and had some problems with TPM GUI and iop connections after that. See detailed description in "problem session". At 01:37Z we started spectro observations with Connies cookies. Cart 4, Plate 2314 - SEGUE bright. Needed an FK5 star (with last night's offsets). SCIENCE-00035372,81 are declared as bad because too bright sky. SCIENCE-00035373-80 data did not have good result by SoS. We have continied the plate until its time was expired. "NOT DONE" after two days of observations. Exposure yesterday was 8900 sec and today 5700 sec. 05:01Z Cartridge 8, plate 2334 - SEGUE Bright - NOT DONE Guide stars on go-to-fiel. Exposure was 6600 sec. 07:52Z Cartridge 1, plate 2267 - Legacy Plate - DONE Guide stars on edges of fibers 10 & 11 with cleared offsets. the plate is done. Exposure time is 3300 sec. 09:18Z Cartridge 9, Plate 2292. DONE. Guider starts with 2 starts. Exposure is 3000. 10:37Z Cartridge 6, Plate 2100. Done. 11:28Z Cartridge 5, Plate 2272 Keike made an educated guess about offset to find guide stars. DONE. Exposure time is 3600. endNight finished without problems. ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End Begin End Frame ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5939 22:24Z 22:41Z 100 O 122.90 127.18 43 ignore 5940 00:14Z 00:56Z 100 O 150.58 -65.73 79 ignore ---=== IMAGING RUN DETAILS ===--- ---=== SKIPPY RESULTS ===--- Run Frame nFrames stars muErr muRms nuErr nuRms rot az el --------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== LTMATCH RESULTS ===--- Run Field nFields alt az nGood rowMean rowSig colMean colSig rot ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== SPECTROSCOPY DATA SUMMARY ===--- Summary Checked (y/n): yes QA Procedures Done (y/n): yes UT Exp Time flavor comment (S/N)^2 totals ========================================== b1 r1 b2 r2 ----- sequence 35362, plate -9999 ------- 22:25 35362 0.0 bias ----- sequence 35363, plate 2100 ------- 22:32 35363 10.0 flat 22:34 35364 2.0 arc ----- sequence 35365, plate -9999 ------- 23:37 35365 0.0 bias 23:42 35366 0.0 bias ----- sequence 35368, plate -9999 ------- 01:06 35368 0.0 bias 01:08 35369 0.0 bias ----- sequence 35370, plate 2314 ------- 01:37 35370 10.0 flat 01:39 35371 2.0 arc 02:02 35372 1200.1 target 02:20 35373 900.1 target 02:37 35374 900.1 target 02:55 35375 900.1 target 03:13 35376 900.1 target 03:41 35378 10.0 flat 03:43 35379 2.0 arc 04:11 35380 1500.2 target 04:39 35381 1500.1 target ----- sequence 35382, plate -9999 ------- 04:50 35382 0.0 bias ----- sequence 35383, plate 2334 ------- 05:04 35383 10.0 flat 05:06 35384 2.0 arc 05:25 35385 900.1 target 05:47 35386 1200.1 target 06:15 35387 1500.1 target 06:43 35388 1500.1 target 07:10 35389 1500.1 target 07:21 35390 10.0 flat 07:23 35391 2.0 arc ----- sequence 35392, plate -9999 ------- 07:30 35392 0.0 bias ----- sequence 35393, plate 2267 ------- 07:52 35393 10.0 flat 07:54 35394 2.0 arc 08:18 35395 1200.1 target 08:40 35396 1200.1 target 09:01 35397 900.1 target ----- sequence 35398, plate 2292 ------- 09:17 35398 10.0 flat 09:19 35399 2.0 arc 09:43 35400 1200.1 target 10:01 35401 900.1 target 10:18 35402 900.1 target ----- sequence 35403, plate 2100 ------- 10:37 35403 10.0 flat 10:39 35404 2.0 arc 11:09 35405 1500.1 target ----- sequence 35406, plate 2272 ------- 11:28 35406 10.0 flat 11:31 35407 2.0 arc 11:51 35408 900.1 target 12:13 35409 1200.1 target 12:41 35410 1500.1 target ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE I ===--- Time Instrument Az Alt Rot Scale pos offset pos offset pos offset ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 02:03Z 4 0 37.68 0.0018 59.30 0.0012 210.98 0.0112 1.000150 03:45Z 4 0 -16.66 0.0018 63.54 0.0012 165.73 0.0112 1.000000 03:55Z 4 0 -21.99 0.0018 62.84 0.0012 161.28 0.0112 0.999970 05:15Z 8 2334 0.43 0.0012 62.43 0.0010 180.16 0.0152 0.999970 06:47Z 8 2334 -42.61 0.0012 55.18 0.0010 144.94 0.0152 0.999970 08:20Z 1 2267 58.90 0.0042 62.04 0.0003 228.29 0.0145 1.000140 09:18Z 9 2292 77.00 0.0020 58.86 0.0002 241.47 0.0247 1.000140 11:04Z 6 2100 100.40 0.0036 62.61 0.0004 -98.05 0.0301 1.000140 11:30Z 5 2272 -50.67 -0.0008 65.12 0.0023 137.36 0.0052 1.000140 ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE II ===--- ---=== DATA TAPE SUMMARY ===--- Goes: JL Stays: JL ---=== FOCUS LOG ===--- setmir piston Temp Wind Time Inst scale M1 M2 Foc Az Alt (C) MPH Dir filt fwhm ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 02:02Z 4 0 1.00015 -1481 128 200 38 59.3 -1.2 6 237 - We rebooted the sp1 mechanicals, after which we could talk to them. 2) Between moving the telescope to 6 degrees alt for opening and moving back to 30 deg alt after opening, the MCP stopped acknowledging commands from the TCC. Our first clue was the "LTA19" error in the telrun session, plus no commands from the tcc were acknowledged. We rebooted the MCP, but it failed to come up after two hard reboots. At that point we called in Craig, since he was on-site. He delved into the MCP and murmur logs and saw that the TCC was sending messages to the MCP, but there was no response, but as he said, "there was no smoking gun". The third MCP reboot worked, except ... 3) The TPM display for axis positions, weather data, inst id, etc. (TPM 1) stopped being displayed after the above problem. No doubt TPM1 didn't come up properly after our MCP crate reboot. Because the telescope was live and collecting data, we decided not to go to the lower enclosure to reboot the TPM card right away. Peregrine called later and we told him our plan to reboot later. 4) Some iop sessions we wound up restarting because of broken pipe errors, also related to the reboots. ------------------------------------ TCC timeouts - 3-4 times tonight, sop commands did not finish because TCC timeout. It could be related with problem 2. Perhaps MCP did not respond promptly. We did not check MCP log.
