APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Monday December 26, 2005 (MJD 53731) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Swing: Dan Long Night: Kaike Pan Mike Harvanek Steph Snedden (by phone, more than once) ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Science! ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- We got good data for plates 1541, 2340 and 2349 but finished none. With data from last night and tonight, 2340 has 3.33 hrs of exposure time and S/N^2 of only 38.5 in r1. Last night, 2075 had 3.58 hrs of exposure time and S/N^2 of only 35.4 in r1. Both 2340 and 2075 are Segue faint plates. Connie Rockosi is aware of this situation and is looking into it. About half the night was lost to weather (clouds and dust). Folklore web pages are currently unavailable. See the main log for details on how to access the folklore html files directly. The mcp crashed shortly after closing (12:55Z). ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Afternoon: Spectro focus checked. No changes made. Still set for between 3 and 4 C. No problems encountered during checkout. Imager dewar changed. Night: The folklore web pages are currently unavailable. The html files can be found on sdsshost at /p/www_server/apache_devel/docs/folklore and on sdsshost2 at /home/usrdevel/snedden/folklore (Thanks Steph!) So, if you need to read folklore, log on to host or host2, cd to the appropriate directory given above, find the desired category, cd into it, cd into the archive and start "more-ing" files. Folklore cannot be written to at the moment so if you have something to folklore, save it and send it as an email for now. Photometric overhead at sunset but clouds are nearby and the satellite image shows more are on the way so we begin with spectroscopy. Plate 1541 (cartridge 2): Low z. Needed to clear offsets and use a spiralPattern search to find the fk5 star. We obtained 2 good exposures (2400 sec total) before switching to a higher priority plate. Plate 2340 (cartridge 1): Segue faint. Needed to clear offsets and use an fk5 to acquire the field. Seeing has deteriorated to 2". Light clouds starting around 04:00Z. We had a few wind gusts in the mid 30s to low 40s starting around 04:20Z. The sustained wind speed was in the mid to upper 20s though and all other weather conditions (clouds, dust, humidity) looked okay so we elected to remain open while monitoring the wind closely. Increasing clouds starting around 05:25Z. We got 8 good exposures (9600 sec total) before this plate expired. Even with the 2400 sec of data obtained last night we still could not declare this plate done. So, this plate has 12000 sec (3.33 hrs) of exposure time on it but still is not finished! A mid-Cal was obtained as requested by SoS. The last exposure (frame 35910) has low S/N^2 (2.0) for r1 and a scattered light warning from SoS but we are still calling it good. Plate 2075 (cartridge 6): Segue faint. Needed an fk5 to find the field but this was mostly due to clouds. We started a science exposure but soon had no guide stars. We ended up aborting the exposure when we had to close for dust around 06:45. The dust dropped below 2000 and we opened again around 11:45Z. Plate 2349 (cartridge 4): Survey. Needed an fk5 to find the field. Seeing is pretty bad (2.5"?). We were able to obtain one usable exposure that was cut short by clouds (1530 sec total) before closing for the night. SoS warned of a bad sky residual. The mcp crashed shortly after closing (12:55Z). We rebooted it and it appeared to recover normally. DIMM worked well once we found Polaris. endNight rejoiced. ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End Begin End Frame ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5955 21:54Z 22:18Z 100 O 133.12 139.26 52 ignore ---=== IMAGING RUN DETAILS ===--- ---=== SKIPPY RESULTS ===--- Run Frame nFrames stars muErr muRms nuErr nuRms rot az el --------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== LTMATCH RESULTS ===--- Run Field nFields alt az nGood rowMean rowSig colMean colSig rot ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== SPECTROSCOPY DATA SUMMARY ===--- Summary Checked (y/n): YES QA Procedures Done (y/n): YES UT Exp Time flavor comment (S/N)^2 totals ========================================== b1 r1 b2 r2 ----- sequence 35887, plate -9999 ------- 21:57 35887 0.0 bias ----- sequence 35888, plate 2340 ------- 22:12 35888 10.0 flat 22:15 35889 2.0 arc 22:26 35890 2.1 arc 22:28 35891 2.1 arc ----- sequence 35892, plate -9999 ------- 23:52 35892 0.0 bias 23:58 35893 0.0 bias 00:03 35894 0.0 bias ----- sequence 35895, plate 1541 ------- 15.8 13.4 17.9 13.5 not done 01:15 35895 10.0 flat 01:17 35896 2.0 arc 01:41 35897 1200.1 target 02:04 35898 1200.1 target ----- sequence 35899, plate 2340 ------- 38.6 29.1 45.4 37.4 tonight 02:30 35899 10.0 flat 11.5 9.4 13.7 10.8 53730 02:33 35900 2.0 arc 50.1 38.5 59.1 48.2 not done 02:57 35901 1200.1 target 03:19 35902 1200.1 target 03:42 35903 1200.1 target 04:04 35904 1200.1 target 04:27 35905 1200.1 target 04:50 35906 1200.1 target 05:12 35907 1200.1 target 05:15 35908 10.0 flat 05:17 35909 2.0 arc 05:41 35910 1200.1 target ----- sequence 35911, plate 2075 ------- clouds and dust - no data 06:13 35911 10.0 flat 06:15 35912 2.0 arc ----- sequence 35913, plate 2349 ------- 6.2 2.8 5.6 2.7 not done 12:15 35913 10.0 flat 12:17 35914 2.0 arc 12:46 35915 1530.5 target ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE I ===--- Time Instrument Az Alt Rot Scale pos offset pos offset pos offset ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 01:21Z 2 1541 -11.89 -0.0018 56.66 0.0035 169.93 0.0081 1.000040 02:41Z 1 2340 35.39 0.0021 57.98 0.0032 209.20 -0.0016 1.000140 06:32Z 6 2075 86.83 0.0024 64.67 0.0042 251.88 -0.0027 1.000140 12:28Z 4 2349 -70.66 -0.0026 70.18 0.0028 119.22 -0.0073 1.000260 ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE II ===--- ---=== DATA TAPE SUMMARY ===--- Goes: JL Stays: JL ---=== FOCUS LOG ===--- setmir piston Temp Wind Time Inst scale M1 M2 Foc Az Alt (C) MPH Dir filt fwhm ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 01:21Z 2 1541 1.00004 -395 994 160 -12 56.6 4.2 24 238 ---- 1.5" 02:42Z 1 2340 1.00014 -1383 93 80 35 58.0 3.6 15 259 ---- 2.0" 12:28Z 4 2349 1.00026 -2568 -744 250 -71 70.1 2.3 27 291 ---- 2.4" ---=== WEATHER LOG ===--- Wind Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust DIMM Sky 22:18Z 43 10 13 291 (WNW) 323 - Clear 22:50Z 43 9 16 275 (W) 347 - Clear 23:22Z 43 12 15 268 (W) 535 - Clear 23:53Z 41 14 16 275 (W) 697 - Clear 00:23Z 39 15 17 251 (WSW) 937 - Clear 00:50Z 39 14 21 244 (WSW) 1033 - clear 01:20Z 39 14 21 238 (WSW) 1553 - clear 01:50Z 39 14 20 254 (WSW) 1568 - clear 02:20Z 38 14 16 267 (W) 1588 - clear 02:52Z 38 14 17 266 (W) 1167 - clear 03:22Z 37 13 21 269 (W) 854 - clear 03:53Z 37 14 31 274 (W) 648 - clear 04:24Z 38 15 19 297 (WNW) 1052 - light clouds 04:54Z 37 15 21 277 (W) 954 - light clouds 05:25Z 37 14 25 279 (W) 1050 - increasing clouds 05:56Z 38 15 34 295 (WNW) 1319 - clouds 06:27Z 37 15 25 289 (WNW) 2471 - clouds 06:57Z 37 14 22 268 (W) 1953 - clouds, dust 07:28Z 37 13 22 285 (WNW) 2848 - clouds, dust 08:00Z 37 12 12 280 (W) 11731 - clouds, dust 08:33Z 37 11 18 265 (W) 13366 - clouds, dust 09:05Z 36 14 21 262 (W) 18323 - clouds, dust 09:37Z 35 14 13 241 (WSW) 14720 - clouds, dust 10:09Z 35 15 12 266 (W) 14239 - light clouds, dust 10:41Z 35 16 9 269 (W) 11237 - clear, dust 11:14Z 34 16 17 293 (WNW) 5780 - light clouds, dust 11:46Z 34 16 18 296 (WNW) 1406 - clouds 12:18Z 35 11 20 293 (WNW) 1187 - light clouds ---=== TELESCOPE STATUS ===--- No early ventilation because it's colder in the enclosure than outside. 00:10Z Enclosure doors opened, enclosure off. 00:30Z Fans and blowers on, louvers opened. 06:45Z Enclosure on, doors closed, fans and blowers off, louvers closed (dust and clouds). 11:45Z Enclosure off. 12:50Z Enclosure on, doors closed.
