APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Tuesday December 27, 2005 (MJD 53732) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Swing: Dan Long Night: Mike Harvanek Kaike Pan Support: Kurt Biery (by phone) ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Science! ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- Could someone (Brian Yanny?) please look at the data from plates 2340 (mjds 53730 and 53731) and 2075 (mjd 53730) and let us know if they are done or not? If they are done, please notify the pluggers (or Steph Snedden) so these cartridges can be replugged. We will try not to observe these plates until we hear more. Thanks. The second half of night: bad seeing, cloudy. From 11:30Z, high winds. we finished two plates: 1541 and 2047, and got data for plate 2051 and 2294. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Afternoon: There was a problem with the murmur log today. Since around sunrise no new information was going to the murmur log. A murmur window just showed the repeating line /linuxp/prd/astroda/v15_10/bin/dscMurPipe: Got unexpected retval=0 on hdr read. Expected 6 bytes. This was traced (Thanks Kurt) to /astrolog/murmur.log getting too large. The file was moved to murmur.log.old3 and a new one started. What is this quasi duplicate of the murmur log? Does anyone/anything use it? Can we periodically clear it or move it (say with cleanupMurmur) to keep it from getting too large? No other problems during the afternoon checkout. Sepctrograph focus checked but not changed. It was quite happy with the ~3C temperatures in the enclosure, which also happens to be roughly the outside temperature as well. 23:05Z Doors Open, Louvers Open, Fans On 00:20Z Enclosure Open Night: 01:02Z: Plate 1541 (cartridge 2): Low z. stars on goto field. Plate is done with total 4800s exposure time, plusing signals we got from last night as shown: MJD b1 r1 b2 r2 53731 15.8 13.4 17.9 13.5 53732 29.6 18.1 30.7 16.7 ------------------------------- Total 45.4 31.5 48.6 30.2 03:00Z: plate 2047 (cart 8): Seque. Because plate 2340 is likely done and that there is no other available plate at the time, we head to this plate about 20 min before it becomes available. After setting up things, we wait for about 5 min, and start science exposures about 10 min before its earliest available moment shown in the database. Although the first 15 min exposure give a (S/N)^2 of 1.9 in r1 (however, the old sos results saythat the (S/N)^2 is about 4.5!) we still call it good but increase exposure time to 20 min for other exposures. Because there is no another available plate to work on except plate 2340 till 5:30Z, we decide to take extra 20 min exposure on this plate, partially because sos reported the r1 (S/N)^2 of the first exposure is only 1.9. Plate done with a total exposure time of 4500s. 05:00Z: plate 2051 (cart 7), Seque. Stars on goto field. lost about 10min thick-cloudy-time due to no available plate. Four 20 min exposures were obtained. Sos reports that r1 (S/N)^2 of all exposure is below 2.0 (but the old Sos gives (S/N)^2 greater than 2.0). 07:05Z: plt 2294 (cart 5): Chunk. FK5 is used. Attempting to collect data through thick clouds. Seeing (~3.0") is another killer that caused low S/N. The r2 (S/N)^2 of some exposures (exp. number 35959, 60, and 65) is below 2.0. We sticked on this plate during last 4.5 hours, but still did not get it done due to bad weather condition. 11:45Z close for high winds. 12:30Z: endNight rejoiced. ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End Begin End Frame ------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== IMAGING RUN DETAILS ===--- ---=== SKIPPY RESULTS ===--- Run Frame nFrames stars muErr muRms nuErr nuRms rot az el --------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== LTMATCH RESULTS ===--- Run Field nFields alt az nGood rowMean rowSig colMean colSig rot ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== SPECTROSCOPY DATA SUMMARY ===--- Summary Checked (y/n): yes QA Procedures Done (y/n): yes UT Exp Time flavor comment (S/N)^2 totals ========================================== b1 r1 b2 r2 22:06 35923 2.0 arc 22:11 35924 0.0 bias 22:31 35925 10.0 flat 22:34 35926 2.0 arc 22:38 35927 2.1 arc 22:40 35928 2.1 arc ----- sequence 35929, plate -9999 ------- 23:49 35929 0.0 bias 23:52 35930 0.0 bias 00:33 35931 0.0 bias ----- sequence 35932, plate 1541 ------- 29.6 18.1 30.7 16.7 01:05 35932 10.0 flat 01:07 35933 2.0 arc 01:35 35934 1200.1 target 01:57 35935 1200.1 target 02:20 35936 1200.1 target 02:23 35937 10.0 flat 02:25 35938 2.0 arc 02:50 35939 1200.1 target ----- sequence 35940, plate 2047 ------- 23.7 8.6 32.3 11.9 03:16 35940 10.0 flat 03:18 35941 2.0 arc 03:37 35942 900.1 target 04:00 35943 1200.1 target 04:22 35944 1200.1 target 04:45 35945 1200.1 target ----- sequence 35946, plate 2051 ------- 11.0 -- 21.4 24.1 05:18 35946 10.0 flat 05:20 35947 2.0 arc 05:47 35948 1200.1 target 06:09 35949 1200.1 target 06:32 35950 1200.1 target 06:54 35951 1200.1 target 06:58 35952 10.0 flat 07:00 35953 2.0 arc ----- sequence 35954, plate 2294 ------- 54.1 22.8 53.3 11.9 07:25 35954 10.0 flat 07:27 35955 2.0 arc 07:53 35956 1200.1 target 08:15 35957 1200.1 target 08:38 35958 1200.1 target 09:00 35959 1200.1 target 09:23 35960 1200.1 target 10:01 35961 1800.1 target 10:33 35962 1800.1 target 10:37 35963 10.0 flat 10:39 35964 2.0 arc 11:20 35965 1800.2 target 11:35 35966 723.0 target ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE I ===--- Time Instrument Az Alt Rot Scale pos offset pos offset pos offset ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 01:11Z 2 1541 -9.13 -0.0014 56.89 0.0020 172.24 0.0067 1.000000 03:17Z 8 2047 -4.09 0.0002 48.70 0.0012 176.43 -0.0168 1.000000 05:22Z 7 2051 -18.84 -0.0015 49.70 0.0008 164.06 -0.0297 1.000000 07:32Z 5 2294 88.33 -0.0004 55.28 0.0044 248.57 -0.0096 1.000210 09:31Z 5 2294 50.51 -0.0004 79.14 0.0044 225.91 -0.0096 1.000180 ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE II ===--- ---=== DATA TAPE SUMMARY ===--- Goes: JL Stays: JL ---=== FOCUS LOG ===--- setmir piston Temp Wind Time Inst scale M1 M2 Foc Az Alt (C) MPH Dir filt fwhm ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 00:35Z 2 1541 1.00000 0 1257 0 121 30.0 2.1 19 359 01:11Z 2 1541 1.00000 0 1310 150 -9 56.9 1.9 15 346 --- 2.0 03:17Z 8 2047 1.00000 0 1285 100 -4 48.7 2.3 16 329 --- 1.7 05:22Z 7 2051 1.00000 0 1282 100 -19 49.7 2.4 9 328 --- 1.8 07:31Z 5 2294 1.00021 -2074 -550 0 88 55.1 1.9 18 11 --- 1.6 09:30Z 5 2294 1.00018 -1778 -302 50 51 79.0 2.1 29 7 --- 2.6 ---=== WEATHER LOG ===--- Wind Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust DIMM Sky 22:23Z 35 8 12 337 (NNW) 682 - Partly Cloudy 22:54Z 35 7 16 353 (NNW) 635 - Partly Cloudy 23:25Z 35 8 23 343 (NNW) 666 - Partly Cloudy 23:58Z 35 7 14 0 (N) 571 - Mostly Clear 00:30Z 35 7 9 326 (NW) 615 - Mostly Clear 00:57Z 35 8 5 350 (NNW) 609 - Mostly Clear 01:27Z 35 7 10 353 (NNW) 592 - Mostly Clear 01:58Z 35 7 9 17 (NNE) 529 - Mostly Clear 02:29Z 35 7 9 351 (NNW) 603 - Mostly Clear 03:01Z 36 6 18 321 (NW) 452 - Mostly Clear 03:31Z 35 6 10 1 (N) 441 - Mostly Clear 04:02Z 34 4 2 354 (NNW) 349 - lightly cloudy 04:32Z 35 5 10 354 (NNW) 298 - Mostly Clear 05:03Z 35 4 12 331 (NNW) 309 - cloudy 05:34Z 36 5 18 352 (NNW) 283 - cloudy 06:04Z 34 3 15 343 (NNW) 286 - cloudy 06:34Z 33 3 19 10 (N) 233 - cloudy 07:07Z 37 6 21 358 (NNW) 165 - cloudy 07:37Z 35 5 11 15 (NNE) 138 - cloudy 08:08Z 35 6 25 26 (NNE) 158 - cloudy 08:38Z 36 5 20 359 (NNW) 150 - cloudy 09:09Z 34 3 24 25 (NNE) 117 - cloudy 09:39Z 35 6 23 24 (NNE) 149 - cloudy 10:09Z 35 6 26 18 (NNE) 124 - cloudy 10:39Z 34 2 21 17 (NNE) 67 - cloudy 11:09Z 37 12 27 20 (NNE) 81 - cloudy 11:41Z 37 14 23 22 (NNE) 201 - windy 12:13Z 38 16 32 26 (NNE) 39 - ---=== TELESCOPE STATUS ===--- 23:05Z Doors Open, Louvers Open, Fans On 00:20Z Enclosure Open 12:00Z enclosure on, louvers close, Fan off due to high winds.
