APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Friday January 27, 2006 (MJD 53763) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Swing: K. Pan Night: H. Brewington, M. Harvanek ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Science! ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- Finished 6 plates (1507, 2397, 2384, 2319, 2363, 2367). Obtained data on another plate (1987). sp1 collimator motor failed to move properly during a collimation adjustment. Collimator A moved to the position -3000, rather than moving -3000 units. Near the end of the night (T = -6.5C) the telescope failed to move north from az = 121. We were able to move it south from 121 though and from here, it did move north to the desired position (+260) for the field. Then, upon moving it to stow at the end of the night, the telescope went to az = 119 instead of 121. Howard had trouble getting the axis to initialize so he could move it to 121 but after about 10 tries it finally initialized. He moved it to 121 and things appeared to work okay from then on. Dimm failed after about 4 hours for unknown reasons. It was NOT a date mismatch problem. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Afternoon: ---------- Spectrograph focus checked. The best focus temp is around 2-3 C. As usual, details in problem section. 23:00Z Fans on, louvers open. West door cracked, east door open. Night: ------ The air in the Lindy cart tires seems to have helped as the cart no longer appears to be scraping on the ground. Clouds nearby with occasional light cirrus overhead so we begin with spectroscopy. 01:13Z Plate 1507 (cartridge 8): Merged. An fk5 was used to acquire the field in twilight. When combined with data from 53762, this plate was done in 3 exposures (3000 sec total). The call for a postCal came too late. Although it's clear overhead, clouds are forming just to the north of us so we stay with spectroscopy. 02:42Z Plate 2397 (cartridge 1): Segue. Guide stars on the gotoField. This plate was finished in 5 exposures (6300 sec total). Lots of SoS warnings. We took a postCal as requested. Clouds nearby. Light cirrus overhead at one point so we stick with spectroscopy. 05:10Z Plate 2384 (cartridge 6): Segue. An fk5 was needed to acquire the field. This plate was finished in 3 exposures (2900 sec total). Lots of SoS warnings. Nearby clouds and variable seeing so we stay with spectroscopy. 06:22Z Plate 2319 (cartridge 7): Seguefaint. Guide stars on the gotoField. This plate was finished in 4 exposures (6000 sec total). There was only a whopping fiber warning for this plate. We did a postCal for this plate while we waited for SoS results. Occasional light clouds and poor seeing kept us doing spectroscopy. 08:35Z Plate 2363 (cartridge 3): Survey. Guide stars on the gotoField. This plate was finished in 3 exposures (3900 sec total). Occasional light clouds and poor seeing kept us doing spectroscopy. 10:04Z Plate 2367 (cartridge 4): Survey. Guide stars on the gotoField. The preCal showed sp1 had gone out of collimation. Howard issued a sp1> mechPiston -3000 Collimators B and C moved properly but A did not. It moved to the position -3000 rather than moving -3000 units. Howard corrected collimator A's position by issuing a sp1> mechMoveColl 7749 0 0 The next preCal looked okay. We lost 23 minutes to this problem. Seeing was lousy but we managed to finish this plate in 3 exposures (4512 sec total). We did a postCal for this plate as requested. 12:12Z We attempted to go to the next field but the telescope would not move north in az from 121 (T = -6.5). Howard had seen this problem before. He moved the telescope 21 degrees south to az = 100, then issued another gotoField and this time the telescope moved north to the proper az for the field (+260). We lost about 8 minutes because of this problem. 12:20Z Plate 1987 (cartridge 5): Survey. Guide stars on the gotoField. We obtained a single 1200 sec exposure before the sky became too bright. Upon moving the telescope to stow at the end of the night, the telescope went to az = 119 instead of 121. Howard had trouble getting the axis to initialize so he could move it to 121 but after about 10 tries it finally initialized. He moved it to 121 and things appeared to work okay from then on. Dimm failed after about 4 hours for unknown reasons. It was NOT a date mismatch problem. endNight rejoiced. ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End Begin End Frame ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5995 21:56Z 22:27Z 100 O 165.36 173.09 66 ignore ---=== IMAGING RUN DETAILS ===--- ---=== SKIPPY RESULTS ===--- Run Frame nFrames stars muErr muRms nuErr nuRms rot az el --------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== LTMATCH RESULTS ===--- Run Field nFields alt az nGood rowMean rowSig colMean colSig rot ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== SPECTROSCOPY DATA SUMMARY ===--- Summary Checked (y/n): YES QA Procedures Done (y/n): YES UT Exp Time flavor comment (S/N)^2 totals ========================================== b1 r1 b2 r2 ----- sequence 36767, plate -9999 ------- 21:57 36767 0.0 bias ----- sequence 36768, plate 2141 ------- 22:06 36768 10.0 flat 22:08 36769 2.0 arc 22:11 36770 2.1 arc 22:14 36771 2.1 arc 22:26 36772 10.0 flat 22:28 36773 2.0 arc 22:34 36774 2.1 arc 22:37 36775 2.1 arc ----- sequence 36776, plate -9999 ------- 23:52 36776 0.0 bias ----- sequence 36777, plate 2141 ------- 23:55 36777 0.0 bias ----- sequence 36778, plate -9999 ------- 00:17 36778 0.0 bias ----- sequence 36779, plate 1507 ------- 17.1 10.6 16.6 13.4 tonight 01:24 36779 10.0 flat 6.0 3.9 5.7 5.4 53762 01:27 36780 2.0 arc ------------------- 01:55 36781 900.1 target 23.1 14.5 22.3 18.8 DONE 02:13 36782 900.1 target 02:36 36783 1200.1 target ----- sequence 36784, plate 2397 ------- 14.0 16.3 35.7 108.5 DONE 02:56 36784 10.0 flat 02:58 36785 2.0 arc 03:19 36786 900.1 target 03:41 36787 1200.1 target 04:04 36788 1200.1 target 04:32 36789 1500.1 target 05:00 36790 1500.1 target 05:02 36791 10.0 flat 05:05 36792 2.0 arc ----- sequence 36793, plate 2384 ------- 17.1 13.5 24.5 35.1 DONE 05:18 36793 10.0 flat 05:21 36794 2.0 arc 05:44 36795 1200.1 target 06:02 36796 900.1 target 06:18 36797 800.1 target ----- sequence 36798, plate 2319 ------- 54.9 53.6 68.7 56.0 DONE 06:31 36798 10.0 flat 06:33 36799 2.0 arc 07:01 36800 1500.1 target 07:29 36801 1500.1 target 07:56 36802 1500.1 target 08:25 36803 1500.1 target 08:28 36804 10.0 flat 08:30 36805 2.0 arc ----- sequence 36806, plate 2363 ------- 20.9 16.5 19.3 20.5 DONE 08:41 36806 10.0 flat 08:44 36807 2.0 arc 09:13 36808 1500.1 target 09:36 36809 1200.1 target 09:59 36810 1200.1 target ----- sequence 36811, plate 2367 ------- 17.1 17.7 18.7 16.6 DONE 10:11 36811 10.0 flat bad -
