APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Wednesday February 22, 2006 (MJD 53789) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- swing: Jurek Krzesinski night: Kaike Pan, Mike Harvanek support: Howard Brewington (DIMM), Eric Neilsen (by phone) ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Science! ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- We finished 1 plate (2212) and obtained useful signal on another 3 plates (2418, 2403, 2355). A large portion of the night was lost to clouds. We tested the fix to endNight in iop v4_18_1. The corrections to the mjds for which the idDiskSummary files contain no imaging data (fields, gangs, md5sum) should be completed (mjds 53773 through 53789). Would John Hendry or Eric please verify this and close PR 6897 if all is well? We declared iop v4_18_1 current. Howard got the new DIMM running. He still needs to rewrite the procedure. Please do not attempt to operate the DIMM until the new procedure is in place. DIMM appeared to worked well. The gaps in the data shortly before 01:30 MST and from 01:30 to 04:30 MST are due to clouds, not malfunction. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Afternoon checkout: ------------------- Spectrographs need a focus tweak. No problems to report. Night: ------ Partly cloudy so we begin with spectroscopy. 01:18Z Plate 2418 (cartridge 8): Survey. Still way too bright for guide stars so an FK5 was used to acquire the field. We got set up on this plate in early twilight but by the time it became dark enough for science the clouds had thickened. The first exposure was declared bad (low S/N^2). The sky improved and the 2nd exposure (1800 sec) was good. This plate expired shortly before the 2nd exposure finished. The call for the postCal came too late. 03:05Z Plate 2403 (cartridge 4): Segue faint. Guide stars on the gotoField. We obtained 4 good exposures (5700 sec total) before this plate expired. SoS warned of whopping fibers and a bad sky residual. A postCal was taken as requested. 05:20Z Plate 2212 (cartridge 5): Survey. Guide stars on the gotoField. This plate was finished in 3 exposures (3600 sec total). We did a postCal while we waited for the SoS results. 06:52Z Plate 2355 (cartridge 9): Survey. Guide stars on the gotoField. Clouds again became problematic. The first 2 exposures were good. The next 3 were declared bad (low S/N^2). We then did a postCal as requested by SoS. The following exposure was good but the last exposure was bad (low S/N^2). So, we got 3 good exposures (4500 sec total) and 4 bad ones before this plate expired. 10:29Z Plate 1809 (cartridge 1): Survey. No guide stars but the FK5 was there so it's almost certainly due to clouds rather than pointing. Clouds prevented us from obtaining any data for this plate. We closed at 11:55Z due to clouds. After talking to Eric tonight it was decided to test the fix to endNight in iop v4_18_1. With Eric on the phone we ran endNight on 53787 from the test iop and it appeared to work correctly. Since that was successful, we then ran im> createIdApoDiskLog on mjds 53773 (first night of bright time) through 53788. According to Eric, this redid only the little bit of endNight that needed to be redone. At the end of the night we ran endNight from the test iop. endNight rejoiced and we declared iop v4_18_1 current and updated the white board. The watcher servers have been restarted with iop v4_18_1. PR 6897 has been reassigned to John Hendry for verification/closing. The endNight corrections to the mjds for which the idDiskSummary files contain no imaging data (fields, gangs, md5sum) should now be completed. John Hendry or Eric should verify this and close PR 6897 if all is well. Howard got the new DIMM up and running. He is still rewriting the procedure. Please do not operate the DIMM until the new procedure is ready. Kaike noticed that the new DIMM appears to give better seeing values. According to Kaike, the old DIMM gave values that were approximately 0.5" better than the guider while the new DIMM gives values a full 1" better than the guider. DIMM appeared to work well tonight. The gaps in the data shortly before 01:30 MST and from 01:30 to 04:30 MST are due to clouds, not malfunction. We closed the DIMM around 04:30 MST (11:30Z) due to clouds. ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End Begin End Frame ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6032 23:09Z 23:57Z 100 O -150.74 -138.90 48 ignore ---=== IMAGING RUN DETAILS ===--- ---=== SKIPPY RESULTS ===--- Run Frame nFrames stars muErr muRms nuErr nuRms rot az el --------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== LTMATCH RESULTS ===--- Run Field nFields alt az nGood rowMean rowSig colMean colSig rot ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== SPECTROSCOPY DATA SUMMARY ===--- Summary Checked (y/n): YES QA Procedures Done (y/n): YES UT Exp Time flavor comment (S/N)^2 totals ========================================== b1 r1 b2 r2 ----- sequence 37555, plate -9999 ------- 23:31 37555 0.0 bias ----- sequence 37556, plate 1809 ------- 00:04 37556 10.0 flat 00:06 37557 2.0 arc 00:12 37558 2.1 arc 00:14 37559 2.1 arc 00:30 37560 2.1 arc 00:32 37561 2.1 arc ----- sequence 37562, plate -9999 ------- 00:54 37562 0.0 bias ----- sequence 37563, plate -9999 ------- 01:10 37563 0.0 bias ----- sequence 37564, plate 2418 ------- 5.0 2.7 7.0 4.4 not done 02:00 37564 10.0 flat 02:02 37565 2.0 arc 02:26 37566 1200.1 target declared bad - low S/N^2 02:58 37567 1800.1 target ----- sequence 37568, plate 2403 ------- 39.7 23.9 46.9 28.3 not done 03:22 37568 10.0 flat 03:24 37569 2.0 arc 03:47 37570 1200.1 target 04:10 37571 1200.1 target 04:43 37572 1800.1 target 05:10 37573 1500.1 target 05:13 37574 10.0 flat 05:15 37575 2.0 arc ----- sequence 37576, plate 2212 ------- 19.7 20.5 19.7 14.5 DONE 05:30 37576 10.0 flat 05:33 37577 2.0 arc 05:51 37578 900.1 target 06:09 37579 900.1 target 06:41 37580 1800.1 target 06:44 37581 10.0 flat 06:46 37582 2.0 arc ----- sequence 37583, plate 2355 ------- 11.0 8.6 9.8 7.9 not done 07:00 37583 10.0 flat 07:02 37584 2.0 arc 07:31 37585 1500.1 target 07:59 37586 1500.1 target 08:27 37587 1500.1 target declared bad - low S/N^2 08:54 37588 1500.1 target declared bad - low S/N^2 09:22 37589 1500.1 target declared bad - low S/N^2 09:25 37590 10.0 flat 09:27 37591 2.0 arc 09:56 37592 1500.1 target 10:24 37593 1500.1 target declared bad - low S/N^2 ----- sequence 37594, plate 1809 ------- 11:24 37594 10.0 flat 11:26 37595 2.0 arc ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE I ===--- Time Instrument Az Alt Rot Scale pos offset pos offset pos offset ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 01:55Z 8 2418 72.71 0.0016 43.87 0.0031 234.85 -0.0055 1.000010 03:26Z 4 2403 148.68 0.0021 47.93 0.0029 -68.72 -0.0199 1.000230 05:34Z 5 2212 87.51 0.0008 58.26 0.0026 249.29 -0.0170 1.000020 07:05Z 9 2355 45.55 0.0010 79.61 0.0032 221.51 0.0504 1.000130 ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE II ===--- ---=== DATA TAPE SUMMARY ===--- Goes: JL Stays: JL ---=== FOCUS LOG ===--- setmir piston Temp Wind Time Inst scale M1 M2 Foc Az Alt (C) MPH Dir filt fwhm ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 01:55Z 8 2418 0.99991 889 2159 220 73 43.7 0.6 10 294 ---- 2.2" 03:26Z 4 2403 1.00023 -2271 -572 120 149 48.0 0.6 8 322 ---- 1.6" 05:35Z 5 2212 1.00002 -198 1073 80 87 58.4 0.6 8 308 ---- 1.1" 07:05Z 9 2355 1.00013 -1284 126 70 45 79.7 0.1 1 190 ---- 1.4" ---=== WEATHER LOG ===--- Wind Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust DIMM Sky 21:09Z 36 -5 19 259 (W) 403 - 21:41Z 38 -3 13 269 (W) 422 - 22:13Z 37 -4 17 246 (WSW) 443 - 22:45Z 36 -4 7 279 (W) 457 - 23:17Z 37 -1 4 228 (SW) 495 - 23:47Z 36 -3 10 254 (WSW) 497 - 00:18Z 35 -2 15 289 (WNW) 540 - 00:49Z 33 -2 11 275 (W) 501 - partly cloudy 01:11Z 33 -2 12 265 (W) 514 - 01:42Z 33 -1 12 296 (WNW) 528 - 02:13Z 33 -2 11 307 (NW) 605 - 02:43Z 33 -3 11 306 (NW) 521 - 03:14Z 33 -3 8 314 (NW) 603 - 03:44Z 33 -3 7 312 (NW) 545 - 04:15Z 33 -3 6 315 (NW) 574 - 04:46Z 33 -4 8 321 (NW) 619 - 05:18Z 32 -4 6 274 (W) 570 - 05:49Z 32 -4 6 288 (WNW) 575 - 06:20Z 31 -3 5 274 (W) 590 - 06:51Z 33 -2 1 251 (WSW) 588 - 07:21Z 31 -4 1 232 (SW) 563 - 07:51Z 32 -3 3 234 (SW) 568 - 08:23Z 33 -2 1 223 (SW) 558 - 08:53Z 32 -4 1 217 (SW) 587 - 09:24Z 34 -3 1 248 (WSW) 538 - 09:55Z 34 -2 1 342 (NNW) 519 - 10:25Z 34 -2 2 317 (NW) 534 - 10:56Z 34 -1 0 213 (SSW) 484 - 11:27Z 34 2 2 198 (SSW) 583 - 11:58Z 33 3 2 185 (S) 540 - 12:28Z 34 4 6 171 (S) 542 - ---=== TELESCOPE STATUS ===--- 00:40Z Enclosure doors opened, fans and blowers on, louvers opened. 00:55Z Enclosure off. 11:55Z Enclosure on, doors closed, fans and blowers off, louvers closed.
