APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Sunday March 5, 2006 (MJD 53800) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- swing: Jurek Krzesinski night: Viktor Malanushenko, Howard Brewington support: Jon Brinkman (phone) ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Science! ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- There were problems during the afternoon checkout; see log. The DIMM is working again; see log. We declared the following plates done: 2128, 2383, and 2018. We got some signal on the following plates: 2427, 2428, and 2359. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- afternoon checkout: ------------------ Problems starting servers. While trying to grab instruments we've got an error sp1> grabInst -handlers -1300 Error: requestListen spectro: Neither 30310 nor 30307 appears to exist see tb in the problem seciton. We tried to kill servers: start_servers -k Then after some time (>5 min): restarted them: start_servers -n -i -s but they didn't last long for the same reason. host2 was reboot, murmur was cleaned and then all went back to normal. Spectrographs focus set for the temperature 6 C. Night: ------ After a reboot of the DIMM computer this afternoon, the DIMM is operating again. And, I also checked the earlier issue about Polaris (i.e., Star 19) being reported by the Select button, via the console window, as Star-0. However, I found that Polaris still has its usual name, viz., "Star 19." I also played with the problem of DIMM forgetting the time/date when it's powered down. The factory suggested that I try the "Sleep" mode. Although the date and time are remembered when the scope is placed in sleep-mode, and then reactivated, the main-power switch is left on during this type of shutdown process. I'm not sure that I like the idea of the scope being powered-up during its downtime. I will contact the manufacture again to see if there's another way to resolve this date/time recall problem. 01:50Z We had thin/scattered clouds at sunset/twilight, so we started with spectro. 02:00Z Cart 03, plate 2382 (segue133). Guide stars on goToField. Plate was declared done after tonight's signal was added to a previous night's; see below. We completed four exposures on this plate; however, the last one was bad because of scattered clouds. So, this plate could not be declared done. 04:47Z Cart 01, plate 2427 (chunk135). Guide stars on goToField. We completed four exposures. But because of thin clouds, only two of the four exposures were good. So, we could not declare this plate done. 06:56Z Cart 04, plate 2359 (chunk123). Guide stars on goToField. We completed seven exposures. Because of clouds, however, only four were good. So, we could not declare this plate done either. 10:20Z Cart 08, plate 2128 (chunk109). Guide stars on goToField. We needed just one short exposure to finish this plate. And, it was declared done when tonight's signal was added to last night's; see below. This plate was declared done; in fact, we were able to add some extra signal with an additional exposure in twilight. endNight finished and was happy.
