APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Saturday April 1, 2006 (MJD 53827) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Kaike Pan Mike Harvanek ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Science! ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- The first 4 hours of the night were lost to clouds. Photometric thereafter but poor seeing prevented us from imaging. We finished 5 plates (2022, 2232, 1713, 2135, 1716). No problems to report. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Afternoon: ---------- Everything worked fine. Spectro focus checked and no adjustment made. Spectro collimation currently set for +6 C. Night: ------ Threatening clouds and a rising dust count delayed ventilation until about 03:20Z (when the dust count appeared to be stable). The clouds finally thinned and we opened around 05:40Z to rapidly clearing skies. Still some clouds so we begin with spectroscopy. 06:02Z Plate 2022 (cartridge 4): Survey. Guide stars on the gotoField. Finished in 3 exposures (2500 sec total). The request for a postCal came too late. Photometric but seeing is variable and generally not good enough for imaging so we stick with spectroscopy. 07:16Z Plate 2232 (cartridge 6): Survey. We needed an fk5 to acquire the field. When combined with previous data (53826), this plate was finished in a single 800 sec exposure. Seeing still variable and generally not good enough for imaging. 08:00Z Plate 1713 (cartridge 9): Survey. Guide stars on the gotoField. When combined with previous data (53826), this plate was finished in a single 1000 sec exposure. Seeing still variable and generally not good enough for imaging. 08:42Z Plate 2135 (cartridge 8): Survey. Guide stars on the gotoField. When combined with previous data (53823), this plate was finished in 2 exposures. However, we are running out of plates to do tonight so we decided to get some bonus S/N on this plate. We obtained 3 exposures in all (2500 sec total). SoS gave a max sky residual warning. Seeing still variable and generally not good enough for imaging. 09:50Z Plate 1716 (cartridge 1): Survey. We needed an fk5 to acquire the field. The first science exposure was accidentally taken before the preCal. Seeing deteriorated during this plate (up to 2.5"). This plate was finished in 4 exposures (4800 sec total). SoS gave 2 max sky residual warnings. A postCal was obtained as requested. endNight rejoiced. ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End Begin End Frame ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6082 23:54Z 00:14Z 100 O -102.04 -97.01 47 ignore ---=== IMAGING RUN DETAILS ===--- ---=== SKIPPY RESULTS ===--- Run Frame nFrames stars muErr muRms nuErr nuRms rot az el --------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== LTMATCH RESULTS ===--- Run Field nFields alt az nGood rowMean rowSig colMean colSig rot ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== SPECTROSCOPY DATA SUMMARY ===--- Summary Checked (y/n): YES QA Procedures Done (y/n): YES UT Exp Time flavor comment (S/N)^2 totals ========================================== b1 r1 b2 r2 ----- sequence 38431, plate -9999 ------- 23:57 38431 0.0 bias ----- sequence 38432, plate 2432 ------- 00:07 38432 10.0 flat 00:09 38433 2.0 arc 00:14 38434 2.1 arc 00:16 38435 2.1 arc ----- sequence 38436, plate -9999 ------- 00:27 38436 0.0 bias ----- sequence 38437, plate 2022 ------- 17.6 16.4 15.4 17.5 DONE 05:52 38437 10.0 flat collimation check 05:55 38438 2.0 arc collimation check 06:18 38439 10.0 flat 06:21 38440 2.0 arc 06:40 38441 900.1 target 06:57 38442 900.1 target 07:11 38443 700.1 target ----- sequence 38444, plate 2232 ------- 5.4 4.7 6.1 5.4 tonight 07:36 38444 10.0 flat 14.8 10.8 18.3 12.1 53826 07:38 38445 2.0 arc ------------------- 07:55 38446 800.1 target 20.2 15.5 24.4 17.5 DONE ----- sequence 38447, plate 1713 ------- 6.4 6.0 6.8 7.1 tonight 08:13 38447 10.0 flat 15.9 10.9 17.8 13.1 53826 08:15 38448 2.0 arc ------------------- 08:36 38449 1000.1 target 22.3 16.9 24.6 20.2 DONE ----- sequence 38450, plate 2135 ------- 16.1 14.2 15.2 16.1 tonight 08:51 38450 10.0 flat 5.1 3.4 5.0 4.0 53823 08:53 38451 2.0 arc ------------------- 09:12 38452 900.1 target 21.2 17.6 20.2 20.1 DONE 09:30 38453 900.1 target 09:44 38454 700.1 target ----- sequence 38455, plate 1716 ------- 23.0 15.4 27.4 25.8 DONE 10:20 38455 900.2 target 10:23 38456 10.0 flat 10:25 38457 2.0 arc 10:49 38458 1200.1 target 11:16 38459 1500.1 target 11:39 38460 1200.2 target 11:42 38461 10.0 flat 11:44 38462 2.0 arc ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE I ===--- Time Instrument Az Alt Rot Scale pos offset pos offset pos offset ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 06:24Z 4 2022 114.02 0.0028 80.53 0.0052 -72.15 0.0474 1.000200 07:43Z 6 2232 277.81 -0.0025 76.82 0.0020 105.63 0.0180 1.000050 08:21Z 9 1713 29.72 -0.0016 64.33 0.0037 204.91 0.0127 1.000240 08:59Z 8 2135 -11.63 -0.0114 82.55 0.0030 169.06 0.0581 1.000140 10:06Z 1 1716 -28.66 -0.0008 66.27 0.0033 155.57 -0.0073 1.000200 ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE II ===--- ---=== DATA TAPE SUMMARY ===--- Goes: JL Stays: JL ---=== FOCUS LOG ===--- setmir piston Temp Wind Time Inst scale M1 M2 Foc Az Alt (C) MPH Dir filt fwhm ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 06:23Z 4 2022 1.00020 -1975 -397 120 114 80.4 4.6 17 271 ---- 1.5" 07:43Z 6 2232 1.00005 -494 843 130 278 76.9 4.3 16 268 ---- 1.8" 08:20Z 9 1713 1.00024 -2370 -719 100 30 64.3 3.7 28 266 ---- 1.7" 08:59Z 8 2135 1.00014 -1383 72 100 -11 82.6 3.6 24 268 ---- 1.6" 10:05Z 1 1716 1.00020 -1975 -327 170 -28 66.3 3.2 14 270 ---- 1.9" ---=== WEATHER LOG ===--- Wind Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust DIMM Sky 00:12Z 46 20 21 256 (WSW) 1223 - mostly cloudy 00:43Z 46 21 21 228 (SW) 1398 - mostly cloudy 01:10Z 46 21 26 251 (WSW) 1556 - mostly cloudy 01:43Z 45 19 19 263 (W) 2142 - mostly cloudy 02:13Z 44 19 17 263 (W) 1723 - mostly cloudy 02:43Z 44 19 24 241 (WSW) 1804 - mostly cloudy 03:13Z 43 19 14 279 (W) 1637 - mostly cloudy 03:43Z 42 18 21 271 (W) 1492 - mostly cloudy 04:13Z 42 18 19 268 (W) 1431 - mostly cloudy 04:45Z 41 17 19 279 (W) 1354 - mostly cloudy 05:16Z 41 17 22 283 (WNW) 1229 - mostly cloudy 05:48Z 40 16 18 279 (W) 1262 - partly cloudy 06:19Z 40 17 13 261 (W) 1237 - partly cloudy 06:49Z 40 17 20 271 (W) 1237 - clear 07:20Z 39 16 20 294 (WNW) 1191 - clear 07:51Z 39 14 19 273 (W) 1155 - clear 08:22Z 38 14 22 264 (W) 1171 - clear 08:52Z 38 13 21 259 (W) 1221 - clear 09:22Z 37 12 16 266 (W) 1295 - clear 09:53Z 37 12 18 278 (W) 1354 - clear 10:23Z 36 14 13 297 (WNW) 1091 - clear 10:54Z 37 16 19 293 (WNW) 1053 - clear 11:25Z 36 14 14 296 (WNW) 1042 - clear 11:57Z 36 7 19 290 (WNW) 1415 - clear 12:30Z 37 4 14 304 (NW) 1708 - clear 13:00Z 36 7 6 350 (NNW) 1569 - clear ---=== TELESCOPE STATUS ===--- 03:20Z Enclosure doors opened, fans and blowers on, louvers opened. 05:40Z Enclosure off. 11:57Z Enclosure on, doors closed, fans and blowers off, louvers closed.
