APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Wednesday April 12, 2006 (MJD 53838) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Tour Guide: John Barentine ET: Jian Ge Suvrath Mahadevan ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- ET Science! ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- Observed five ET plates tonight. There was some minor instrument trouble that may have resulted in about 1/2 hour's worth of lost data. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Afternoon --------- No trouble during checkout. Night ----- Began ventilating around 01:30Z, just before sunset. Winds were nearly calm out of the WSW, the sky was perfectly clear horizon to horizon, dust and humidity were low. During twilight we put on Cart 6 (Plate E8024). The ET crew spent the next few hours calibrating their instrument and we opened just before 05:00Z. 05:01Z Cart 6 Plate E8024. No GSOGTF. Had to do an fk5InFiber number 10, in which I found a dim glow. Offsets of A=-7, D=-8 nearly centered the star. The initial focus guess was -19 for the airTemp, and a best focus of about -50 was found after a proper focus loop. The seeing worsened just as we got on this field with the wind swinging around from the east and picking up speed. Seeing improved as the wind continued its azimuthal sojourn toward the south. Got one 50-minute exposure here. 06:16Z Cart 7 Plate E8025. GSOGTF and no significant focus or scale change needed. On the sky quickly here. Seeing got progressively worse as the wind speed strengthened to almost 20 MPH sustained. Focus also slid dramatically; toward the end I had to adjust it from -50 to -100 to improve the guider FWHMs. One 50 minute exposure here. 07:20Z Cart 8 Plate E8026. No GSOGTF. fk5InFiber number 10 -- no dice. The next 30 minutes saw spiralPattern run a total of six times, eventually locating the FK5 star at an (A,D,R) = (-10,-20,330). WAY, WAY off. There was some trouble with the ET instrument during this time, so we stayed on thi field longer than usual, after the science exposure ended, while it was fixed. 09:20Z Cart 4 Plate E8022. No GSOGTF. Cleared last plate's offsets and tried again, without luck. fkInFiber number 10, but nothing. Resorted once again to spiralPattern and found a glow at (A,D,R) = (-20,-10,+60). Did an additional offset A=-7 to center, stickied, than back to the field. Better seeing during this plate than in the past two plates or so. Did one 50-minute exposure. 10:30Z Cart 9 Plate E8027. No GSOGTF with previous plate's offsets still sticky. Cleared the offsets, did an fk5InFiber number 10, and this time found a glow immediately. Did A=+5, D=-2 to center; stickied. Note that throughout the past two plate with the big offsets there were no errors two large to correct on the fiducial crossings, so it's a bit of a mystery as to why this was such a problem. The rest of this plate was uneventful. Yet one more 50 minute exposure here. Closed for the night at 11:45Z. ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End Begin End Frame ------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== IMAGING RUN DETAILS ===--- ---=== SKIPPY RESULTS ===--- Run Frame nFrames stars muErr muRms nuErr nuRms rot az el --------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== LTMATCH RESULTS ===--- Run Field nFields alt az nGood rowMean rowSig colMean colSig rot ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== SPECTROSCOPY DATA SUMMARY ===--- Summary Checked (y/n): yes QA Procedures Done (y/n): n/a UT Exp Time flavor comment (S/N)^2 totals ========================================== b1 r1 b2 r2 ----- sequence 38603, plate -9999 ------- 00:52 38603 0.0 bias 01:07 38604 0.0 bias ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE I ===--- Time Instrument Az Alt Rot Scale pos offset pos offset pos offset ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 05:10Z E8024 -56.43 -0.0006 66.61 0.0037 132.41 0.0079 1.000000 06:20Z E8025 -26.76 -0.0015 57.26 0.0037 157.62 -0.0127 1.000180 07:50Z E8026 195.23 0.0110 68.03 0.0059 21.76 0.0000 1.000180 09:30Z E8022 129.09 0.0073 80.54 0.0083 -56.48 0.0561 1.000200 10:37Z E8027 124.72 0.0029 66.47 0.0071 -72.24 0.0141 1.000200 ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE II ===--- ---=== DATA TAPE SUMMARY ===--- Goes: JL Stays: JL ---=== FOCUS LOG ===--- setmir piston Temp Wind Time Inst scale M1 M2 Foc Az Alt (C) MPH Dir filt fwhm ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 05:14Z E8024 1.00000 0 1089 -50 -58 65.8 11.7 10 125 -- 1.9 06:20Z E8025 1.00018 -1778 -362 -50 -27 57.2 12.9 15 174 -- 1.9 06:47Z E8025 1.00018 -1778 -404 -100 -37 54.3 12.3 18 149 -- 1.8 07:50Z E8026 1.00018 -1778 -362 -25 195 68.0 11.6 18 158 -- 1.6 09:31Z E8022 1.00020 -1975 -467 50 129 80.6 10.7 20 146 -- 1.5 10:44Z E8027 1.00020 -1975 -524 -25 126 67.6 10.9 20 157 -- 1.5 ---=== WEATHER LOG ===--- Wind Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust DIMM Sky 23:22Z 64 20 9 241 (WSW) 695 - Clear 23:54Z 61 20 8 192 (SSW) 731 - Clear 00:24Z 60 20 12 212 (SSW) 717 - Clear 00:55Z 59 19 12 229 (SW) 684 - Clear 01:25Z 56 19 6 238 (WSW) 721 - Clear 01:55Z 54 18 2 258 (WSW) 725 - Clear 02:25Z 54 18 2 251 (WSW) 745 - Clear 02:55Z 54 18 2 253 (WSW) 867 - Clear 03:26Z 54 17 2 205 (SSW) 849 - Clear 03:56Z 54 17 1 217 (SW) 869 - Clear 04:26Z 53 17 1 182 (S) 976 - Clear 04:57Z 54 17 1 143 (SE) 984 - Clear 05:28Z 54 18 14 135 (SE) 955 - Clear 05:58Z 55 18 16 180 (S) 837 - Clear 06:31Z 55 18 16 179 (S) 802 - Clear 07:03Z 53 18 13 137 (SE) 937 - Clear 07:35Z 53 23 17 152 (SSE) 1185 - Clear 08:07Z 53 25 16 158 (SSE) 1256 - Clear 08:37Z 52 27 20 156 (SSE) 1515 - Clear 09:07Z 51 27 17 144 (SE) 1433 - Clear 09:37Z 51 28 19 153 (SSE) 1397 - MstlyClr 10:08Z 51 28 17 161 (SSE) 1361 - MstlyClr 10:39Z 51 28 17 150 (SSE) 1410 - MstlyClr 11:10Z 50 29 15 163 (SSE) 1490 - MstlyClr 11:40Z 49 31 24 146 (SE) 1635 - MstlyClr ---=== TELESCOPE STATUS ===--- 01:30Z Doors and louvers open, fans on 04:50Z Enclosure off 11:45Z Enclosure on, doors and louvers closed, fans off Telescope is parked at 121,30 with Cart 9 (Plate E8027) mounted Counterweights at 250 Spectro autofill reconnected No interlocks bypassed Dewar weights at 11:58Z Imager: 119lbs 18psi Spectro: 194lbs 20psi ---=== SOFTWARE USED ===--- IOP/SOP: v4_19_0 Watcher: v2_31_0 MCP: v6_1_3 TPM: tpm_v3_3_0 AstroDa: v15_11 TCC: TCC 2.7.2.1 August 6 2004 sdssProcedures: SoS: v5_1_0 hoggPT: v1_6_9 plate-mapper: v4_3_1 ---=== MIRROR NUMBERS ===--- PRIMARY: -------- Scale: 1.000000 MIGS TONIGHT NOMINAL Axial A -5.8570 -5.8440 Axial B -5.6710 -5.6770 Axial C 0.9370 0.9420 Trans D -10.0050 -9.9940 Lateral E 10.3886 10.3759 Lateral F 11.9507 11.9380 GALILS Commanded: 4700. -2450. 3000. -7800. 3300. 3000.
