APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Tuesday May 16, 2006 (MJD 53872) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Steph Snedden Olena Malanushenko Shannon Watters Mike Harvanek (swing) Eric Neilsen (by phone) ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Shakedown. ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- Shakedown summary - night 1 1) Some Kurt's DA shakedown tasks completed succesfully 2) IOP change required some fine-tuning, but then ran successfully. We will have a new test IOP for tomorrow with one small change. 3) No pointing model taken, since imager and spectroscopy checkouts indicated pointing was good, and the fiducial tables were not any better than last months'. 4) Binned scan on sky completed (run 6147) and recovery from binned scanning was without problems. 5) A small amount of spectro data were taken, but Moon caused all but one exposure to be declared bad. Still to do: 1) Close Kurt's PRs 2) Check changes to sdssProcedures 3) Declare operational test software current ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Shakedown Tasks: ================ New fiducial tables were built. After examining the tables and comparing them with the current versions, it was decided to keep the current tables and not install the new ones. Two successful (yahoo!) test exposures were taken with the engcam. sdsshost and sdssmth were removed from the network. New VxWorks kernel with increased mbufs. We switched to the new VxWorks kernel per Kurt's instructions. You can see the mbufShow results in problem section. We switched to astroDa to v15_12. The video readout is clean, no ragged edges seen on the screens. The primary and secondary mig values were not getting into the murmur log and so were not making it into logTool although they were showing up at the command line when we typed m4l in iop. Eric was called again. He said the problem was due to the fact that cleanupMurmur was run from the current iop, not test iop. Steph did a cleanupMurmur from the test iop and the mig values started showing up in the murmur log again. Restarting logTool should then get the mig values back into the log. Night: ------------- The EngCamera is mounted. But as we have so large ShakeDown program, Steph made the decision to do Imager and Spectro checkout first and based on skippy results and how we find stars on Spectro see if the pointing model needs to be adjusted or continue to use the current one for next month. We unmounted EngCam and mounted Imager. 4:00- Open Telescope. We have problem with auto recording information to the log. Writing some information manually, some form iop session using i4l command. The problem has been fixed when Steph cleanUpMurmur absed on Eric's recommendation. As the current log was opened and we wrote some information in the log already we continue to work with log in this way. 4:41Z - Run 6144, bias. 5:21Z - Run 6145, run imaging for checking of imager condition. 37 N stripe - hole area -science, startLambd=-37.5. Aborted drift after 5 minutes ot observations because the seeing is bad and the moon is rising. The imager is alife, but photo 4 did not show drift of data. The skippy was very happy. Next we tested a binned scan on-sky for Connie. Issued track command: track 167,0.0 fk5 /scanvelocity=(0.0275,0) 6:04Z - Run 6146, 4147 init4Bin 4 4 16050 -keepSize Runs 6146 and 6147 for 4*4 binning. The result is ok. We change the binning to reverting to normal imaging. Run 6148 - bias. Run 6149 - test run with normal imaging. The reverting from binning scan to normal imaging is ok too. Donuts were taken while we did the imager checkout, but the seeing was not good at the time and we were at fairly low altitude. If we get the chance we should do the donuts again on a better night. For better or worse they are located on Phoenix in /data/photo/optics/53872. Steph changed the permission of access to everybody, and we could close and opened log again and save information. After that we could see auto loading of information to the log. 8:10 We are doing spectroscopy.
