APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Sunday May 28, 2006 (MJD 53884) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- John Barentine Olena Malanushenko ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Science! ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- We have had photometric conditions for all the night. We considered imaging once stripes became available around 07:00Z, but seeing was not stable during the majority of the night, averaging about 1.4-1.5 arcsec, but with excursions up to 2 arcseconds. We did spectro all night instead. We have finished 5 plates (1800, 1796, 1815, 1731 and 2544). One of them is requested by Brian with priority 4. (Another requested plate has been finished last night, but we had sos problem and ask help to evaluate it - see previous log). The science exposures for plate 1800 in r1 camera have sky multiplets of lines. Also, apoplotsky for plate 2544 clearly show several ground levels on the plots especially for r2 and b2 cameras. Please, check the reduction of these plates. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Afternoon --------- All telescope systems are checked and work properly. Spectro focus is set for +12 deg C, given the colder than expected overnight temperatures last night. Night ----- 2:15Z open telescope Cartridge 1, plate 1800, chunk. Wind 23, humidity 22%, dust 2400,T=12.9C FSonGTF, Efficiency 80%, seeing below 1.0 3:30 Pre-Calibration 3:41 (exp 900), 3:59 (900), 4:17(600) - Science Reduction of r1 cameras shows unusual s/n ratio about 65. QA: bias f=39488: b1 1226/1022, b2 1210/1185, r1 1172/1230, r2 452/1327. (Apo_plotbias gave very different histograms compare the expected one for both observed biases. We observed two more biases and the result was the same. But on sos session on John's computer the histograms were ok. So, I rebooted of sos session and histograms were good after that). Flat f=39493 and Arc f=39494 are ok. Apo_plotsky for f=39495 are good for each cameras beside r1. There is a problem with calculations and visualization. We checked the science exposures and found that spectra for r1 camera have sky multiplets of lines. So, the signal, obtained with this camera, is good, but the calculation does not work properly for this plate. We decide that this plate is "DONE" anyway as smallest s/n for other cameras is 15.6. Cartridge 2, plate 1796,chunk Wind 26, humidity 24%, dust 2400,T=12.5C GoToField did not show stars. Go to Fk5 and found star with a=-17 and d=+5. Did sticky offset and GoToFiled, but still did not find guider stars. Finally we found stars using SpiralPattern and total offsets were A=+10, D=0, and R=+67. Efficiency 80%, seeing 1.2 4:55 Pre-calibration 5:02(expopsure 900), 5:20(900), 5:37(900) Science The plate is DONE with s/n=14.5. The plate is DONE. 11:00Z Closed telescope endNight is completed. Total dust for this night is around 21K counts. No any spikes. We thinks that there is not nessary to clean mirror now. ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End Begin End Frame ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6180 22:53Z 23:12Z 100 O -61.10 -56.46 39 ignore Doghouse bias ---=== IMAGING RUN DETAILS ===--- ---=== SKIPPY RESULTS ===--- Run Frame nFrames stars muErr muRms nuErr nuRms rot az el --------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== LTMATCH RESULTS ===--- Run Field nFields alt az nGood rowMean rowSig colMean colSig rot ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== SPECTROSCOPY DATA SUMMARY ===--- Summary Checked (y/n): QA Procedures Done (y/n): UT Exp Time flavor comment (S/N)^2 totals ========================================== b1 r1 b2 r2 ----- sequence 39487, plate -9999 ------- 22:54 39487 0.0 bias 22:59 39488 0.0 bias ----- sequence 39488, plate 2544 ------- 23:09 39489 10.0 flat 23:12 39490 2.0 arc 23:22 39491 10.0 flat 23:24 39492 2.0 arc ----- sequence 39493, plate 1800 ------- 03:33 39493 10.0 flat 03:35 39494 2.0 arc 03:58 39495 900.1 target 04:16 39496 900.1 target 04:29 39497 600.1 target 04:34 39498 0.0 bias 04:36 39499 0.0 bias ----- sequence 39500, plate 1796 ------- 04:58 39500 10.0 flat 05:00 39501 2.0 arc 05:19 39502 900.1 target 05:37 39503 900.1 target 05:49 39504 600.1 target ----- sequence 39505, plate 1815 ------- 06:05 39505 10.0 flat 06:07 39506 2.0 arc 06:28 39507 900.1 target 06:45 39508 900.1 target 07:03 39509 900.1 target ----- sequence 39510, plate 1731 ------- 07:21 39510 10.0 flat 07:23 39511 2.0 arc 07:42 39512 900.1 target 07:59 39513 900.1 target 08:19 39514 1000.1 target ----- sequence 39515, plate 2544 ------- 08:37 39515 10.0 flat 08:39 39516 2.0 arc 09:08 39517 1200.1 target 09:31 39518 1200.1 target 09:54 39519 1200.1 target 10:21 39520 1500.1 target 10:35 39521 660.1 target ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE I ===--- Time Instrument Az Alt Rot Scale pos offset pos offset pos offset ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 03:50Z 1 1800 8.99 -0.0011 66.58 0.0033 187.53 -0.0058 1.000090 06:25Z 6 1815 -26.75 -0.0043 62.48 0.0030 157.42 -0.0079 1.000090 07:19Z 4 1731 -14.70 -0.0055 62.99 0.0027 167.47 -0.0066 1.000190 10:14Z 8 2544 223.01 0.0014 80.97 0.0033 47.52 0.0167 1.000040 ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE II ===--- ---=== DATA TAPE SUMMARY ===--- Goes: JL Stays: JL ---=== FOCUS LOG ===--- setmir piston Temp Wind Time Inst scale M1 M2 Foc Az Alt (C) MPH Dir filt fwhm ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 22:57Z 8 0 1.00005 -494 922 50 121 30.0 16.1 26 269 03:50Z 1 1800 1.00009 -889 202 -200 9 66.6 12.9 16 263 -- 0.98 06:25Z 6 1815 1.00009 -889 336 -75 -27 62.5 11.8 5 267 -- 1.15 07:18Z 4 1731 1.00019 -1876 -408 0 -14 63.0 11.3 14 284 -- 1.40 10:14Z 8 2544 1.00004 -395 766 -25 223 80.9 10.4 9 272 -- 1.40 ---=== WEATHER LOG ===--- Wind Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust DIMM Sky 21:49Z 62 19 20 264 (W) 2474 - Clear 22:21Z 61 19 22 255 (WSW) 2455 - Clear 22:52Z 63 21 24 263 (W) 2106 - Clear 23:23Z 62 18 17 253 (WSW) 1864 - Clear 23:53Z 63 20 23 258 (WSW) 1865 - Clear 00:25Z 61 18 23 252 (WSW) 2082 - Clear 00:57Z 61 18 27 235 (SW) 1784 - 01:29Z 58 17 21 258 (WSW) 2065 - 02:01Z 56 15 16 265 (W) 2128 - 02:31Z 55 15 18 260 (W) 2092 - 03:03Z 55 15 14 262 (W) 2128 - 03:34Z 55 16 18 266 (W) 2410 - 04:05Z 54 17 17 255 (WSW) 2383 - 04:36Z 54 18 20 265 (W) 2384 - 05:06Z 53 19 14 262 (W) 2271 - 05:37Z 54 19 13 268 (W) 2316 - 06:07Z 53 20 12 278 (W) 2672 - 06:38Z 53 20 11 275 (W) 2399 - 07:09Z 52 21 4 264 (W) 2434 - 07:39Z 52 22 10 283 (WNW) 2329 - 08:09Z 52 23 14 278 (W) 2309 - 08:40Z 51 23 6 265 (W) 2315 - 09:11Z 51 23 17 285 (WNW) 2242 - 09:41Z 50 24 14 286 (WNW) 2221 - 10:12Z 50 25 10 280 (W) 2229 - 10:46Z 50 25 6 271 (W) 2343 - 11:17Z 49 25 9 275 (W) 2582 - ---=== TELESCOPE STATUS ===--- 01:25Z Fans and blowers on, 02:15Z Open telescope 11:15Z Telescope is closed, fans off. cart 5 (plate 2160) is mounted. Temperatures in the enclosure at the time of focus check today were: tpm_TM_PMSSAvg 9.64357 tpm_TM_TelairAvg.VALA 10.0425 Motor positions were: sp1 Coll_motor_A 14819 Coll_motor_B 14838 Coll_motor_C 14806 sp2 Coll_motor_A 3233 Coll_motor_B -180 Coll_motor_C 622 Results of a postCalib showed that we were just barely in spec for XSIGMA and WSIGMA, so I gave a 2 degree margin by mechPistoning -200 in both sp1 and sp2. The following postCalib showed XSIGMA and WSIGMA numbers backing reasonably away from the spec limit, so we should be in good shape for tonight.
