APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Thursday June 15, 2006 (MJD 53902) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Days: Dan Long Night: Mike Harvanek Jurek Krzesinski Shannon Watters Also Wik: Steph Snedden Visitor: Jackie Diehl (bringer of food) ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Sparsely sage rudimentary in time spectro tests and other shake items! ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- We completed all the sparse-plugging tests on both cartridges 3 & 4. We have decided not to have these cartridges replugged until we hear from Craig that the test data are good. Craig, please let us know what you think about the data. We confirmed that the PT FF lamp was changed. We verified the changes in the new version of Procedures. We did the darks and biases for spectro monthly checkout. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Afternoon --------- The afternoon check was trouble free. There was a curiosity though. After yesterday's careful tweaking of the spectrographs to get all parameters in spec, today 3 of the 4 XMIN readings were in the yellow. The only difference is that today cartridge 1 was used, and yesterday it was cartridge 2. The XMIN readings are still 4 to 8 pixels from being out of spec (red), so I didn't make another change today. If the low values show up in other cartridges and cartridge 2 turns out to be the oddball, I'll then go ahead and tweak accordingly. Focus is currently set for about 17 C. Details of focus check in the problems section. High wind speed and dust levels in excess of 7000, prevented late afternoon ventilation. Night ----- The watcher complained that id6 was unresponsive: no response (not responding: 2006-06-16 02:50:22Z) Photo 2 crate was rebooted at approximately 03:23Z. We confirmed that the PT FF lamp was changed. Thanks Norm. We verified all changes in the new version of Procedures. We did all 3 sparsely-plugged tests on both cartridges 3 and 4. The details are given below: CARTRIDGE #4, EXERCISE 1 bias: 39690, good flat: 39691, 10 sec exp time, good flat: 39692, 50 sec exp time, flat: 39693, 200 sec exp time, bias: 39694, bias: 39695, good arc: 39696, 40 sec exp time, arc: 39697, 180 sec exp time, To begin with we checked the images for the number of plugged fibers. We counted 16 fibers in sp1 and only 15 fibers in sp2 (1 fiber missing). EXERCISE 2 We unplugged the fibers from the even-numbered bundles. We unplugged the fibers from the odd-numbered bundles and replaced them with different fibers from the same bundles. We counted 7 fibers on sp1 images. We counted 8 fibers on sp2 image. bias: 39698, bias: 39699, good flat: 39700, 10 sec exp time flat: 39701, 50 sec exp time flat: 39702, 200 sec exp time bias: 39703, bias: 39704, good arc: 39705, 40 sec exp time arc: 39706, 180 sec exp time While setting up for ex. 3 we noticed that the fiber from bundle 11 wasn't plugged, so we must have missed it. EXERCISE 3 bias: 39707, bias: 39708, good flat: 39709, 10 sec exp time flat: 39710, 50 sec exp time we noticed too many fibers plugged in this time, so we checked at cartridge and found the one which we supposed to unplug (bundle 9). We did that and repeated the sequence again. We MAY have left fiber 10 from bundle 25 in for exercises 1,2 & 3. It should have been swapped with a different fiber from the same bundle 25 for exercise 2; and then fiber 10 should have been plugged back in for exercise 3. bias: 39711, bias: 39712, good flat: 39713, 10 sec exp time flat: 39714, 50 sec exp time flat: 39715, 200 sec exp time bias: 39716, bias: 39717, good arc: 39718, 40 sec exp time arc: 39719, 180 sec exp time -------------------------------------------------------------------------- CARTRIDGE #3, EXERCISE 1 bias: 39720 bias: 39721, good flat: 39722, 10 sec exp time flat: 39723, 50 sec exp time flat: 39724, 200 sec exp time bias: 39725 bias: 39726, good arc: 39727, 40 sec exp time arc: 39728, 180 sec exp time EXERCISE 2 We unplugged the fibers from the even-numbered bundles. We unplugged the fibers from the odd-numbered bundles and replaced them with different fibers from the same bundles. bias: 39729, bias: 39730, good flat: 39731, 10 sec exp time flat: 39732, 50 sec exp time flat: 39733, 200 sec exp time bias: 39734, bias: 39735, good arc: 39736, 40 sec exp time arc: 39737, 180 sec exp time EXERCISE 3 bias: 39738, bias: 39739, bias: 39740, good flat: 39741, 10 sec exp time flat: 39742, 50 sec exp time flat: 39743, 200 sec exp time bias: 39744, critical error: ln2 empty - we refilled spectrograph dewars, waited for ccd temp. to drop down to nominal level and resumed the test. bias: 39745, bias: 39746, good arc: 39747, 40 sec exp time arc: 39748, 180 sec exp time The spectrographs asked for a fill around 08:21Z. The last fill had occurred around 22:30Z and we thought we still had a couple of hours before the next fill. So we had the telescope at 90 degrees (and so the hoses were disconnected) to give us easier access to the cartridge fibers for the sparsely-plugged tests. We got a critical error around 08:21Z. We had just started a 200 sec test exposure and as soon as the exposure finished, we moved the telescope and filled the spectrographs. However, the ln2 temp and the ccd temp on both ccd 2 and ccd 3 continued to rise even after the fill had completed. Jurek then issued a cc stopfillseq and cc startfillseq for sp2 and temperatures started to drop. The warmest readings were: sp2> cc 2 tcheck CAMERA 2 LN2 TEMP NOMINAL 77 K MEASURED 128 K CCD TEMP DAC SET AT 115 = -0.52 V = -90 C MEASURED -65 C sp2> cc 3 tcheck CAMERA 3 LN2 TEMP NOMINAL 77 K MEASURED 90 K CCD TEMP DAC SET AT 115 = -0.52 V = -90 C MEASURED -84 C Both ccd 1 and ccd 4 on sp1 were fine the whole time. We did the darks for spectro monthly checkout. Note that all 3 darks had an exptime = 180 s but a darktime = 900 s. We're not sure why the exptime is not 900 s. We also did 20 biases for spectro monthly checkout.
