APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Saturday July 1, 2006 (MJD 53918) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Swing: Elena Malanushenko Night: Viktor Malanushenko Steph Snedden Shannon Watters Support: Fritz Stauffer (phone) ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Science! ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- Two plates finished and signal on a third plate. We had a variety of problems as well, detailed in the log body. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Swing: ----- No problems to report. Spectro focus was checked, and found to be right for the expected temperatures, so no changes were made. Night: ----- Clouds to the north and west, but no immediate threat of rain, and clear overhead. We opened for spectroscopy. 03:13Z - Cartridge 3, plate 2539 - SEGUE bright 146 - declared done. ---------- Used an FK5 to find the field because it was bright twilight. It was in the fiber on the slew. We had a mix of clouds, Moon and bad seeing. This was another problematic bright SEGUE plate, where the SoS values had little resemblance to reality. Since this is a holiday weekend, we doubt Brian will be available to check S/N values, so we did an eyeball estimate of S/N from the IDL quick 1-d plots of the brightest and faintest reddening standards on the plate, measured at 5000A (a somewhat arbitrary choice). The faintest reddening standard gave a S/N of about 15, the brightest gave 35, so we will call this plate done in four exposures totaling 5400 s. There were actually five exposures taken, but we lost the last one in a series of events that I still don't quite understand. We accidentally did an instChange 12 minutes before the last exposure was finished. That exposure ended while we were on the sky acquiring the new field, after a loadCart and preCal were issued. The next frame that read out in sequence was the arc from the precal. So, we lost a science exposure and a flat as a result of the early instChange. The sequence of events is detailed in the problems section. 05:40Z - Cartridge 1, plate 2198 - Legacy chunk115 - declared done ---------- Needed an FK5 to find the field. We fought a wave of thicker clouds that reduced our efficiency on this plate. Finished the plate with a total exposure time of 4500 s. 07:40Z - Cartridge 6, plate 2542 - SEGUE faint 147 - not done ---------- No Guide stars on goToField. No FK5 either, even with offset hunting. At this point we tried reloading the cartridge and doing another goToField. The final position of the second goToField was very different than the position after the first goToField. At first we thought this might be another problem between the TCC and MCP, like a few nights ago, where a slew stopped prematurely, but it appears to be a different problem. It looks like the telescope went back to the plate 2198 coordinates. We believe a loadCart with the proper cartridge and plate was issued, so we really don't know why the coordinates were wrong. Here is the sequence of events for those who want to peruse the TCC logs: 07:38Z - instChange to mount cartridge 6 cartridge 6, plate 2542 is loaded into SOP 07:42Z - goToField ends at coordinates 281.6,45,121 (plate 2198 position) 08:03Z - second goToField ends at coordinates 58,71,130 Once we were pointing to the right place, an FK5 was easily found. We managed to complete three exposures for a total exposure time of 3600 s before ... 09:43Z - Both Viktor and Steph's X sessions froze at the same time (both running from landru). After a quick phone call to Fritz to make sure there were no extra things we had to do besides reboot, we restarted landru. We had an exposure in progress at the time, which never read out and was lost. After the reboot, we had no time to complete another exposure before twilight, so we closed. Including the lost exposure, this cost us about an hour of on-sky time. We also lost information from the activities portion of logTool, when a new one was started. 10:30Z Closed up. endNight finished, but said it could not find the irsc images to copy. ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End Begin End Frame ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6231 23:36Z 23:53Z 100 O -17.00 -12.62 43 ignore ---=== IMAGING RUN DETAILS ===--- ---=== SKIPPY RESULTS ===--- Run Frame nFrames stars muErr muRms nuErr nuRms rot az el --------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== LTMATCH RESULTS ===--- Run Field nFields alt az nGood rowMean rowSig colMean colSig rot ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== SPECTROSCOPY DATA SUMMARY ===--- Summary Checked (y/n):y QA Procedures Done (y/n):y UT Exp Time flavor comment (S/N)^2 totals ========================================== b1 r1 b2 r2 ----- sequence 40062, plate -9999 ------- 23:14 40062 0.0 bias 00:21 40063 0.0 bias ----- sequence 40064, plate 2539 ------- 00:48 40064 2.1 arc 00:50 40065 2.1 arc 01:00 40066 0.0 bias 03:28 40067 10.0 flat 03:30 40068 2.0 arc 04:02 40069 1500.1 target 04:30 40070 1500.1 target 04:53 40071 1200.1 target 05:15 40072 1200.1 target ----- sequence 40073, plate 2198 ------- 05:44 40073 2.0 arc 06:18 40074 1500.1 target 06:21 40075 10.0 flat 06:23 40076 2.0 arc 07:02 40077 1200.1 target ----- sequence 40084, plate -9999 ------- 10:24 40084 0.0 bias ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE I ===--- Time Instrument Az Alt Rot Scale pos offset pos offset pos offset ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 03:14Z 3 2539 186.00 -0.0006 64.33 0.0015 9.50 0.0089 1.000200 05:41Z 1 2198 -42.57 -0.0023 67.43 0.0024 143.75 0.0089 1.000100 ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE II ===--- ---=== FOCUS LOG ===--- setmir piston Temp Wind Time Inst scale M1 M2 Foc Az Alt (C) MPH Dir filt fwhm ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 03:14Z 3 2539 1.00020 -1975 -543 -50 186 64.3 14.2 16 80 - 1.6" 05:41Z 1 2198 1.00010 -988 269 -50 -43 67.4 13.0 14 78 - 2.1" ---=== WEATHER LOG ===--- Wind Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust DIMM Sky 23:00Z 65 43 1 244 (WSW) 605 - 23:32Z 69 45 1 259 (W) 592 - 00:03Z 64 40 1 289 (WNW) 524 - 00:36Z 63 38 4 87 (E) 508 - 00:44Z 63 37 1 68 (ENE) 482 - 01:16Z 62 37 14 70 (ENE) 550 - Partly Cloudy 01:48Z 60 37 16 68 (ENE) 508 - " 02:20Z 59 37 19 74 (ENE) 516 - " 02:51Z 58 37 19 74 (ENE) 501 - " 03:21Z 57 36 19 81 (E) 522 - " 03:52Z 56 37 16 75 (ENE) 583 - " 04:23Z 56 38 13 90 (E) 635 - " 04:53Z 56 39 18 84 (E) 657 - " 05:25Z 55 40 14 86 (E) 780 - " 05:55Z 55 40 14 85 (E) 803 - " 06:25Z 54 41 13 90 (E) 743 - " 06:56Z 54 41 15 110 (ESE) 767 - " 07:27Z 53 43 11 94 (E) 798 - " 09:56Z 54 41 8 91 (E) 830 - " 10:28Z 54 40 9 82 (E) 784 - " 11:00Z 54 40 4 87 (E) 788 - " 11:32Z 54 40 13 75 (ENE) 777 - " ---=== TELESCOPE STATUS ===--- 01:3Z - Doors opened.
