APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Saturday August 12, 2006 (MJD 53960) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Swing: Kaike Pan Night: Steph Snedden Shannon Watters Support: Eric Neilson French Leger Connie Rockosi Fritz Stauffer ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Shakedown ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- We weren't able to do on-sky shake items due to bad weather. It wasn't trouble-free (see problems) but we were able to finish some shakedown activities: We did the monthly spectro check-out. Checked the fiducials, but there were too many missed crossings. Performed a test of the new NE lamps by taking 5 back-to-back arcs without turning the lamps off. The PT FF lamp was changed. ...and we dealt with problems. The grade 5 N2 will probably need changing in a day or two. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Afternoon: Engineering crew still work on the spectrographs, and release the telescope to observers at 6:30pm. Per French, they work around for the communication problem between arc lamps and SOP, MCP. Now when SOP turns lamps on, it should say they are on. But when lamps fail while SOP turns them on, SOP will not know. French left rotator at -180 for their working convienence. During afternoon PT checkout, the air pressure gauge and purge are gauge values are not matched their indicated numbers, they adjusted to indicated values. id 4 was found dead during the checkout, photo 2 was rebooted. The camra pressure was found to be 15, 2 below the indicated 17. since engineering crew just pumped the ccd4 dewar, no spectro checkout was performed. No other problem to report. Night: Night: ----- Since this is the first night of shakedown after summer shutdown, we expected to encounter problems. We were not disappointed. To start with, Sp2's CCD temperatures levelled off above the nominal range. We called Connie. See the problems section for the resolution. Once this was fixed, we had spectro monthly checkout scheduled. We encountered a problem with the weather server and weather info not getting into the fits headers. See the problems section. We then had problems with the sp2 mechanicals, where a mechPiston -7000 sent actuator A to -12000 approximately and didn't move B or C. Subsequent moves produced unexpected results as well. See the problems section. Once all the actuators had gone to a limit, they all started moving properly. We finished the shakedown portion of the monthly spectro check-out; positioned the fibers on the CCD's, 25 bias exposures, and 3 darks. He also did more cleaning of the rotator read heads (without removing them). Unfortunately, it looks like more work is needed, and only the azimuth fiducial crossings were good. alt fiducials 1 and 5 were never read. Fiducials 3 and 4 were only read in one direction. Was the alt read head moved? Many rotator fiducials were still not read. Missing fiducials are (some are duplicates because of the wrap): 1, 2, 3, 5, 21, 22, 23, 24, 25, 26, 27, 37, 38, 39, 40, 41, 46, 76, 77, 78, 79, 81, 97, 98, 99, 100, 101, 102, 103, 113, 114, 115, 116, 117 Many of the rot fiducials that were read were only read twice, although there were four crossings. NE Lamp Test: ============= We took 5 arcs (post cal) without turning the lamps off to test the new helical NE lamps. After he started cooling sp2, the temperatures leveled out above the nominal again. We called Connie and she changed the TSET voltage so that the set temperature dropped into the nominal range. Mirror Numbers Problem ====================== We couldn't get the mirror numbers. After issuing a "m4l" command an error was returned: caget (part of tpm) failed to get proper value for tpm_MIG1A while executing "error "caget (part of tpm) failed to get proper value for $channel"" invoked from within "if {$cagetFailed} { error "caget (part of tpm) failed to get proper value for $chann el" } else { keylset migList $channel $channelValue ..." Weather Handler Problem =========================== We started the spectro monthly checkout and took our first flat on sp1. We waited for almost 10 minutes for the results to appear in SOS. Steph had noticed that we were also missing some biases from initializing SOP sessions and when she tried a 'load cart' from her terminal it gave us an error: SOPGUI: loadCartridge -latest 5 2172 /linuxp/prd/iop/v4_25_0/params/cartridgeInfo.par Loading map: /data/spectro/plugMapM/plPlugMapM-2172-53956-02.par Reading /data/spectro/plugMapM/plPlugMapM-2172-53956-02.par Taking absolute values of GUIDE fiberId Taking absolute values of ALIGNMENT fiberId Coordinates are 238.7363 19.32499 Starting weather Handler can't read "weatherData(airtemp)": no such element in array can't read "weatherData(airtemp)": no such element in array while executing "if { $weatherData($structtemp) != 0 } { set temp [format %.2f [expr $weatherData($structtemp)]] if { $temp > -30 && $temp < 40 } { ..." He had Steph issue a "show weather" command in the TCC and then all the missing exposures showed up in SOS one at a time but the air temp isn't listed for any exposures. This means we don't have any weather info for logtool. It turns out that IOP gets the weather information from Marmot but the weather information has been moved to Pod by the 3.5m group; we weren't aware of the change until yesterday. Steph changed her copy of weather.tcl to get weather info from pod instead of marmot, but that didn't fix anything. Fritz was called and said that marmot linked to pod, so weather.tcl shouldn't need changing and the problem occurred as a result of yesterday's work, where weather data was thrown out if an application didn't ask for it within a certain time frame (I think that's what Fritz said...) any way, he fixed that. SP2 Mechanical Problems ======================= While doing the spectro monthly checkout we noticed sp2 was out of focus so we did a 'goSpecFocus' and it suggested that we move the collimator pistons -29,000. We didn't want to do such a large move all at once so we issued a 'mechPiston -7000' command. It moved A to -11,800 but didn't move B or C. We tried to move A back twice with 'mechMoveColl 4000 0 0' but each time A only moved about 30. We thought the angle might be a problem so we tried to move B and C with 'mechMoveColl 0 -4000 -4000' but only B moved; to -13,800. Now we were even more confused so we tried a small move of 100 for all 3 motors but only C moved; to -12,300. Now we thought all 3 motors may have been 'homed' so we tried another move of 100 for all 3 and it worked. The mechPiston and mechMoveColl commands worked fine after that.
