APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Tuesday August 29, 2006 (MJD 53977) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Swing: Kaike Pan Night: Howard Brewington Shannon Watters ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Scienza! ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- The humidity was too high to open so we started the night with a sparse-plugged plate test on cart 4. The results were similar to those done on MJD 53966 with the same cart. We did a test of the rotator at different altitudes while charting the rotator current. French has the results. During the test we had a MCP axes error (problems section). We eventually started to vent and installed the imager. The bellows pressure was low after we unlatched the Tbars (problems section) and when we moved the counterweights up they overshot there position (log section). Naturally the humidity increased and we had to quit venting. The humidity did another nose dive and when we began venting. We had to readjust the bellows pressure again and had an iop error while trying an imager bias (problems section). We eventually opened the enclosure and encountered another iop error when we started the scan of 82 N (problems section). We only scanned from lambda=-179 to -170.5 (including set up and ramps) before we had to close again because of humidity. We never made it back onto sky. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Afternoon: ---------- Spectro focus checked but no adjustment made, focus still set for approximatey 15 C. No problem to report. Night: ------ 02:55Z Running sparse-plugged plate test on cart 4 (plate 9999 on SoS). bias: 40518, good bias: 40519, good flat: 40520, 10 sec exp time, good flat: 40521, 50 sec exp time, good flat: 40522, 200 sec exp time, good bias: 40523, good bias: 40524, good arc: 40525, 40 sec exp time, good arc: 40526, 180 sec exp time, good bias: 40527, good We compared tonight's arcs to the arcs taken on MJD 53966 with the same sparse-plugged plate (when they were declared 'good') and the images look the same for each camera. 03:50Z Running rotator current test. We'll give printouts of the Strip Tool results to French. Started with the altitude at 90. Moved the rotator from 0 to +150, back through 0 to -150. The current was ~1200 units (what are the units?) and flat moving to +150 and ~-1000 units and flat moving to -150. Changed altitude to 60. While moving back to 0 from -150 Howard heard a humming noise from the rotator during the last 5 degrees of movement. The current was ~1200 and flat moving to +150 but it started at ~-1000 while moving from +150 to -150 and gradually decreased to ~-1200 units. While moving back to 0 from -150 Howard heard the humming again. We moved it back to -150 and then to 0 and heard it again. We moved it to 150 and heard it there as well. It only makes the sound when moving in the positive direction and when the motor seems to be ramping down for the last few degrees. Changed altitude to 30. While moving from 0 to +150 the current ramped up to ~1550 and stayed flat. While moving from +150 to -150 the current started at ~-1000 and gradually decreased to ~-1800. Changed altitude to 6. No humming noise while moving from -150 to 0 this time. While moving from 0 to +150 the current ramped up to ~1550 and stayed flat. While moving from +150 to -150 the current started at ~-1000 and gradually decreased to ~-1800. 06:45Z The humidity dropped into the 70's at 05:35Z. At 06:05Z we started to vent and install the imager. The bellows pressure was 40 psi with the TBars latched but dropped to 33 psi when we unlatched them so we adjusted them back to 40 psi with the intent of adjusting them back when we latched them again. When we moved the counterweights back to 690 they all moved to different positions above 700. We brought them back down to 650 and again up to 690. They wound up closer to the correct position but on visual inspection #1 looks like it was too high again. We were finished installing the imager at 06:30Z and were getting ready to open when the humidity climbed to 85%, so we stopped venting. The humidity is currently 95% with a 1.1C dew point depression. 08:05Z The humidity dropped to an acceptable level at 07:30Z so we waited 1/2 hour and began ventilating. The bellows pressure was low again (problem section). 08:07Z iop Error (problems section). We rebooted the crates and that seemed to fix the problem. 08:10Z Run 6291On-telescope imager bias while we vent and continue to watch the weather. 08:40Z We opened the enclosure and tried to start imaging 82 N and had an iop error (problesm section). This cost us 5-10 minutes because we had to back up and restart the drift. 08:52Z Strip 82 N; Run 6293. Started at lambda=-179. Skippy happy at frame 12. In focus at frame 17. The altitude axis has been working fine so we quit clearing it. The imager bellows pressure was 40 psi with the TBars latched and it dropped to 33 psi when we unlatched them so we adjusted the pressure to 40 psi with the intent of readjusting it after latching them while taking the imager off at the end of the night. We had to close due to humidity but when the humidity decreased and we started ventilating again we found the pressure had dropped to 36 psi (unlatched), so we adjusted it again. When we went to turn the bellows pressure down to 33 psi (before latching the TBars) we found it had decreased to 35 psi. It didn't increase after latching them so we adjusted it back to 40 psi and checked again 10 minutes later to make sure it was stable.
