APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Friday September 22, 2006 (MJD 54001) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Howard Brewington Steph Snedden Visitor: Mike Harvanek Jurek Krzesinski ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Science of the Supernova kind! (82 S) ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- o Tests were run to induce "flop" in the offending r1 element that caused such awful flat and arc images yesterday. No "flop" seen. o Clouds, followed by high humidity. No science photons. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Afternoon: --------- Fritz swapped the pool disk on ad4 with the one on ad3 (not the card, according to his email). We ran a bias to make sure archiving was not disturbed by the swap. It was okay - all file transfers made it from the pool to 'host2/files1. We leave it to Kurt to monitor the checksum errors and see if they move from ad4 to ad3. The ad1 monitor went bad partway through the bias. Fritz replaced it. The compressed air desiccant canister on the east wall of the lower enclosure is showing a hint of pink, but mostly blue. It should be okay, but should be watched. We tried to induce a flop of lens element(s) (or whatever caused the awful r1 images yesterday) in r1 by moving sp1 around on the rotator at three different altitudes and taking arcs. The arcs all looked fine. No flop. The details of the tests follow the problem section of the log. The north fork temperature sensor was loose from its block. We reseated it and wrapped a little tape to hold it to the block as security. I know, French. Tape. Inelegant. Night: ----- Cloudy overhead at sunset, so we wait to open. Weather conditions do allow us to ventilate the building. 02:46Z Clouds getting worse. 04:10ZHumidity climbing. 04:18Z Landru's fvwm2 locked up on Howard, when he did a Firefox reload page. Steph notes that she hasn't had this problem, and she usually doesn't run any browsers on Landru (occasionally Mozilla). Howard restarted his sessions on Landru, and started Mozilla instead of Firefox. We'll see if that helps. Howard doesn't like Mozilla, though. It's too slow. 08:53Z Humidity better, but the clouds remained. 10:30Z After a few short-lived sucker holes (which tempted us), we gave up when we reached the point of no (scientific) return, and closed. endNight quickly rejoiced. ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End Begin End Frame ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6386 23:09Z 01:04Z 100 O 58.11 87.05 56 ignore 6387 01:59Z 02:24Z 100 O 100.76 106.91 55 bias ---=== IMAGING RUN DETAILS ===--- ---=== SKIPPY RESULTS ===--- Run Frame nFrames stars muErr muRms nuErr nuRms rot az el --------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== LTMATCH RESULTS ===--- Run Field nFields alt az nGood rowMean rowSig colMean colSig rot ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== SPECTROSCOPY DATA SUMMARY ===--- Summary Checked (y/n):n QA Procedures Done (y/n):n UT Exp Time flavor comment (S/N)^2 totals ========================================== b1 r1 b2 r2 ----- sequence 40734, plate -9999 ------- 22:54 40734 0.0 bias 23:02 40735 0.0 bias 23:51 40740 2.0 arc 23:56 40741 2.0 arc 00:01 40742 2.0 arc 00:09 40743 2.0 arc 00:13 40744 2.0 arc 00:18 40745 2.0 arc 00:22 40746 2.0 arc 00:31 40747 2.0 arc 00:35 40748 2.0 arc 00:39 40749 2.0 arc 00:43 40750 2.0 arc ----- sequence 40751, plate -9999 ------- 04:51 40751 0.0 bias ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE I ===--- Time Instrument Az Alt Rot Scale pos offset pos offset pos offset ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE II ===--- ---=== FOCUS LOG ===--- setmir piston Temp Wind Time Inst scale M1 M2 Foc Az Alt (C) MPH Dir filt fwhm ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 23:10Z 5 0 1.00000 0 1257 0 121 30.1 13.4 24 258 ---=== WEATHER LOG ===--- Wind Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust DIMM Sky 22:52Z 58 41 22 247 (WSW) 1726 - Most cloudy 00:14Z 52 39 21 264 (W) 1597 - ' 00:44Z 51 40 21 259 (W) 1466 - ' 01:14Z 51 40 17 262 (W) 1481 - ' 01:45Z 51 40 18 263 (W) 1376 - ' 02:17Z 51 41 18 273 (W) 1305 - ' 02:49Z 52 41 17 267 (W) 1290 - Cloudy 03:21Z 51 42 21 269 (W) 1166 - ' 03:53Z 51 43 21 266 (W) 1148 - ' 04:26Z 51 43 24 257 (WSW) 1081 - ' 04:59Z 51 43 23 259 (W) 985 - ' 05:32Z 50 44 27 255 (WSW) 834 - ' 06:04Z 50 44 22 260 (W) 819 - ' 06:36Z 49 45 21 252 (WSW) 821 - ' 07:08Z 48 46 18 269 (W) 886 - ' 07:40Z 48 45 22 271 (W) 894 - ' 08:12Z 47 41 24 290 (WNW) 1420 - ' 08:44Z 47 39 15 268 (W) 1373 - ' 09:17Z 46 38 20 270 (W) 1431 - Most cloudy 09:49Z 46 36 17 277 (W) 1445 - ' 10:21Z 46 35 19 275 (W) 1499 - ' ---=== TELESCOPE STATUS ===--- 00:30Z started building ventilation. 00:45Z opened doors. 06:03Z closed doors and turned off building ventilation. 09:21Z Reopened doors and started building ventilation. 10:38Z Closed up. Spectro autofill connected, but we forced a manual fill after an autofill stopped after only 20 lbs of LN2 were delivered. The spectro fill system was left in "auto" mode for Wendell to monitor during the day, but it should last until the late afternoon. ---=== SOFTWARE USED ===--- IOP/SOP: v4_26_0 Watcher: v2_34_0 MCP: v6_3_2 TPM: tpm_v3_3_0 AstroDa: v15_12_1 TCC: TCC 2.7.2.1 August 6 2004 sdssProcedures: v2_19 SoS: v5_1_4 hoggPT: v1_6_9 plate-mapper: v4_3_1 ---=== MIRROR NUMBERS ===--- PRIMARY: -------- Scale: 1.000000 MIGS TONIGHT NOMINAL Axial A 24.6810 24.6750 Axial B 26.2550 26.2540 Axial C 25.3350 25.3490 Trans D 13.5630 13.5760 Lateral E 9.9441 9.9568 Lateral F 11.5316 11.5316 GALILS Commanded: 4600. -2000. 2650. -9300. -9800. -9800. The movement of the telescope was intended to move the offending element in r1 that caused the out of focus, comatic images we saw yesterday. Of course, no "flop" was noticed today.
