APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Thursday October 19, 2006 (MJD 54028) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Swing: Viktor Malanushenko Observer: Mike Harvanek and Elena Malanushenko Visitors: Don York, Michael Clark, Anita Houck, Robert Wilson-Black, Juli Wilson-Black ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Science! ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- Photometric all night but the seeing was unstable and worse than survey standards for much of the time. Imaged 82 S from lambda +111 to +179 (including ramps) and from lambda -176.5 to -122 (including ramps). There are 2 runs because we stopped to do 72 N. Note that there is about a 5 degree gap between the 2 runs. Imaged 72 N from lambda -148 to -137 (including ramps) and from lambda -140 to -135 (including ramps - actually, this isn't much more than a ramp) in survey conditions. There are probably not enough good data in these 2 runs (especially the 2nd) to be useful. Both runs were longer but were marred by bad seeing. Both Hartmann exposures for the spectro collimation check (frames 41119, 41120) had 3 sec rather than 2 sec exposure times. Weirdness with the DIMM. See the log for details. The cloud camera artifact still appears to be present but at a very low level (e.g., 05:34:00). ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Afternoon: ---------- Telescope has been checked. All systems work fine. Spectro Collimation has been done and focusing on expected night temp.= +4.0 C. The PT has been checked also. It work good; has been obtained biases and Dom Flats. Open the doors and start vent. at 23:50Z Night: ------ Both Hartmann exposures for the spectro collimation check (frames 41119, 41120) had 3 sec rather than 2 sec exposure times. Around 00:30Z, we mounted the imager, closed up the building and did an on-telescope bias (run 6467). The teamster died around 01:01Z and we forced a restart. We removed the enclosure around 01:05Z. Weirdness with the DIMM tonight. The setup went okay and everything seemed to be working properly but we kept getting the message that the seeing measurement was unsuccessful. So, we got no information out of it, even though there appeared to be no problem. However, around 04:40Z (22:40 local time), the problem solved itself and we started getting information. Weird. 01:40Z Run 6468: Supernova, 82 S, start lambda +111. Skippy is good from the beginning. In focus by frame 21 (lambda +113.3). Seeing starts off between 2" and 3" but eventually (frame 56, lambda +118.6) improves to 1.5" to 2". seeingRun started calling the seeing "good" around frame 249 (lambda +147.6). Ended the drift at 06:11Z, frame 460 (lambda +179) to do Segue 72 N imaging. 06:15Z Run 6469 : Segue, 72 N, start lambda -148. Everything (skippy, focus, seeing) good from the beginning. The seeing went bad at frame 80 (lambda -137) and stayed bad for 60 frames. When the seeing improved, we ended the drift and backed up to redo the portion obtained in bad seeing. 07:42Z Run 6470: Segue, 72 N, start lambda -140. Everything (skippy, focus, seeing) good from the beginning. The seeing for all the frames changed from good to acceptable around frame 30 or so. The seeing from frame 39 (lambda -135) on changed to bad around frame 60 or so. At this point, we did not have enough time to go back and redo the rest of the stripe so we ended the drift and went back to supernova imaging. Since we're not sure how much (if any) data from runs 6469 & 6470 will be usable, we billed the time from 06:15Z to 08:22Z to "other weather problem". 08:22Z Run 6471: Supernova, 82 S, start lambda -176.5. We were not able to begin where we left off in run 6468. There is about a 5 degree gap. Sorry, Rick. Skippy and focus good from the beginning. Seeing started out around 2" and proceeded to bounce around between 1.4" and 2". seeingRun called the seeing "good" between frames 159 and 179 and between frames 239 and 329. The rest of the time, it called the seeing "bad". The drift was ended at frame 371 (lambda -122) due to twilight. The cloud camera artifact still appears to be present but at a very low level (e.g., 05:34:00). ltMatch did not run tonight. Photometric all night but the seeing was unstable and worse than survey standards for much of the time. endNight rejoiced. The spectro auto-fill system was connected and left in the "auto" mode but a fill was NOT forced as per French's instructions. ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End Begin End Frame ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6466 21:49Z 22:13Z 100 O 64.62 70.77 55 ignore 6467 00:34Z 00:59Z 100 O 106.15 112.38 56 bias on-telescope 6468 01:41Z 06:12Z 82 S 111.36 -180.64 468 science all good 6469 06:16Z 07:40Z 72 N -147.65 -126.49 155 science bad seeing after -137 6470 07:43Z 08:19Z 72 N -139.68 -130.70 73 science bad seeing after -135 6471 08:24Z 12:02Z 82 S -176.36 -121.56 379 science all good ---=== IMAGING RUN DETAILS ===--- See the main log. ---=== SKIPPY RESULTS ===--- Run Frame nFrames stars muErr muRms nuErr nuRms rot az el --------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6468 9 4 45 0.200 0.140 -0.700 0.112 -0.00270 201 56 6468 78 4 125 0.000 0.127 -0.100 0.141 -0.00310 201 56 6468 130 4 118 -0.000 0.174 -0.300 0.139 -0.00244 201 56 6468 181 4 90 -0.300 0.169 -0.700 0.155 -0.00163 201 56 6468 231 4 52 0.200 0.119 -0.800 0.120 -0.00076 201 56 6468 281 4 50 -0.000 0.154 -1.500 0.115 -0.00186 201 56 6468 334 4 39 0.300 0.138 -1.400 0.119 -0.00135 201 56 6468 384 4 38 0.100 0.200 -1.900 0.155 -0.00161 201 56 6468 435 4 26 0.300 0.141 -2.500 0.154 0.00346 201 56 6469 10 4 85 -2.400 0.136 -2.100 0.127 0.01029 114 66 6469 61 4 81 -3.700 0.128 -1.600 0.144 0.00744 118 65 6469 112 4 35 -3.800 0.170 -1.700 0.137 0.00545 122 63 6470 18 4 72 -1.900 0.135 -1.600 0.153 0.02330 147 73 6471 17 4 34 -1.700 0.180 -4.400 0.114 -0.01706 237 40 6471 67 4 51 -1.900 0.174 -4.900 0.147 -0.01692 237 40 6471 119 4 31 -2.100 0.148 -5.400 0.118 -0.01775 237 40 6471 170 4 44 -2.200 0.139 -5.700 0.100 -0.01716 237 40 6471 220 4 70 -2.300 0.175 -5.900 0.119 -0.01711 237 40 6471 273 4 41 -2.100 0.157 -6.300 0.097 -0.01694 237 40 6471 323 4 40 -2.500 0.119 -6.500 0.093 -0.01752 237 40 ---=== LTMATCH RESULTS ===--- Run Field nFields alt az nGood rowMean rowSig colMean colSig rot ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== SPECTROSCOPY DATA SUMMARY ===--- Summary Checked (y/n): YES QA Procedures Done (y/n): N/A UT Exp Time flavor comment (S/N)^2 totals ========================================== b1 r1 b2 r2 ----- sequence 41116, plate 2441 ------- 21:29 41116 0.0 bias 22:11 41117 10.0 flat 22:13 41118 2.0 arc 22:27 41119 3.0 arc 22:29 41120 3.0 arc ----- sequence 41121, plate -9999 ------- 00:07 41121 0.0 bias 00:42 41122 0.0 bias ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE I ===--- Time Instrument Az Alt Rot Scale pos offset pos offset pos offset ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 02:32Z imager -20.49 0.0000 55.41 0.0000 72.69 0.0000 1.000000 06:45Z imager 62.69 0.0000 64.91 0.0000 158.71 0.0000 1.000000 07:48Z imager 33.71 0.0000 73.33 0.0000 136.54 0.0000 1.000000 08:53Z imager -57.26 0.0000 39.96 0.0000 44.84 0.0000 1.000000 ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE II ===--- ---=== DATA TAPE SUMMARY ===--- Goes: JL Stays: JL ---=== FOCUS LOG ===--- setmir piston Temp Wind Time Inst scale M1 M2 Foc Az Alt (C) MPH Dir filt fwhm ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 02:33Z imager 1.00000 0 -228 -128 -20 55.4 4.8 18 9 i'23 1.8" 04:02Z imager 1.00000 0 -329 -229 -20 55.4 4.7 9 25 i'23 1.3" 05:08Z imager 1.00000 0 -306 -206 -20 55.4 4.7 16 25 i'23 1.4" 06:45Z imager 1.00000 0 -316 -192 63 64.9 4.6 18 15 i'23 1.1" 07:48Z imager 1.00000 0 -398 -259 34 73.3 5.0 4 21 i'23 1.4" 08:53Z imager 1.00000 0 -242 -193 -57 40.0 3.7 3 51 i'23 1.7" 09:58Z imager 1.00000 0 -269 -220 -57 40.0 5.2 16 354 i'23 1.3" ---=== WEATHER LOG ===--- Wind Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust DIMM Sky 19:53Z 41 12 7 354 (NNW) 170 -
