APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Thursday November 9, 2006 (MJD 54049) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Swing: Shannon Watters Night: Kaike Pan, Elena Malanushenko Help: Stephanie Snedden ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Shake Down ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- It was photometric but the seeing was bad the most of night. It was the first night of Shakedown with new iop, tpm, and watcher. We homed and relaxed mirrors, made a new pointing model, and checked imager on sky with real Supernova scan. Stripe 82 S has been observed for lambda from 157 to -123 (including ramps) with variable seeing conditions. Also we observed out of focus donuts and telescope bias. Frames for donuts are saved in the folder of /home/kpan/donuts. The new test iop works well everywhere but did not work properly only with server, mcpMenu and logTool (see log) We closed the telescope and connect the spectro autofill. It start to fill immediatly, but took only 35 lb. Is it need to take more? ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Afternoon: --------- We had a problem starting the PT server (see problems). We tried to start the servers using the test version of iop (v4_28) but we could not (windows appeared then disappeared) each time. So, we started the current version of iop v4_27 on server. Didn't change the spectro focus. We don't know what the temp will be when/if the night crew gets to using the spectrographs tonight (shakedown). Night: ------ It is clear and photometric. Temperature is 5Cm humidity is 43%, wind is up to 23 mph. 00:15 Telescope is opened just after sunset. Spectro dewars are forced to fill but they have took only 23 lb and we completed their filling manually. We set up the test version of iop v4_28_0 for all programs. McpMenu does not woth with test iop and we use current. We do not see any changes in Watcher GUI which we expected to see. The tape section is still there. Also we could not get mirrow numbers (m4l) and focus (f4l) for logTool using test iop and got them using another session with current iop. >>>> im> m4l Error: invalid command name "dp_connect_safe" im> f4l Error: invalid command name "dp_connect_safe" im> s4l UT Exp Time flavor comment =============================================== Error: can't read "platesObserved": no such variable im> iopVer v4_28_0 >>> We homed and relaxed the primary and homed the secondary. The mirror numbers looked good. 3:05Z Eng Cam is mounted and we took a pointing model. The erros are ~2". New model looks good and has been applied. We used average size grid file GRID_7_5_30_85_T_0_34.DAT;1 with 35 points. See calculations in problem section. 04:45 Mounted imager 05:58Z Run 6536. Supernova, Stripe 82S. Drift started at lambda=137. The drift had been ended at frame 37 because of low altitude position. 05:20Z Run 6537. Stripe 82 N. Drift started at lambda=157 at 5:20Z. Ramp started at lambda 158 (frame 16) at 5:24Z. Science started at lambda=160 (frame 29) at 5:32Z. Skippy and focus are good from the beginning. It is clear and photometric but seeing is bad (2.0--2.5") from the beginning. 10:31 end science, frame 529, lambda -125. 10:39 - end drift, frame 543, lambda -123. 10:41 Run 6538 -- Out of focus donuts... The start focus position is -163, and we have good frames 10-12. Change focus to +173 with frames 13-14, and to -463 with frames 15-17. End drift. 11:54 Run 6539, telescope bias. Total 35 frames. We moved telescope away from moon and El Paso illumination, and point to az=150, alt=40. Run 6539, frames 35. Un-mounted imager and switched to spectroscopy. The sop did not start to work with test iop versions and gave the error. When Kaike tried to grabInst from a SoP assoocated with the test version IOP, he got an error of: sp1> SOPGUI: grabInstruments -handlers 900 ************************************************** ====>>>>>>RELAY SERVER FAILED TO START!!!!<<<===== ************************************************** invalid command name "dp_connect_safe" ************************************************** invalid command name "dp_connect_safe" invalid command name "dp_connect_safe" while executing the program - see problem section. So he started a new SOP session with current version IOP. The session works fine then. After switching back to spectro, we still had about 15 min to morning twilight, we tried to get one exposure for plate 2432 (cart 4). But we lost this period of time because of a problem in seeting up the guiderMac. In the first three attempts, Kaike just deleted 2 from SenSys2, it didn't work properly. After we close, we tried to setting up the guiderMac, this time, typing into "SenSys". This solved the problem. 12:10Z. It is twilight already and we go to close. endNight is finished. During the endNight, we had many messages: (log to old,, not archiving) which are in the problem session . We closed the telescope and connect the spectro autofill. It start to fill immediatly, but took only 35 lb. Is it need to take more? We was going to spool the SN data, but it seems already done? ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End Begin End Frame The test iop is supposed to start 4 servers whereas the current iop would only start 3 servers (master, imager, spectro). We were able to use the current iop (v4_27) to start the 3 servers without problems.
