APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Saturday January 13, 2007 (MJD 54114) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Shannon Watters Steph Snedden Mike Harvanek (swing) Bob Pfaffenberger (support) Dan Long (support by phone) visitor: Elisa Snedden ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Science! But of course! ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- A little science, a lot of cloud. Mike determined that the problem with the "cart not in doghouse" can also be caused by the wire to the sensor being loose. We have to be careful to not abuse the wire. Completed one plate and got some signal on aother before the clouds and high humidity got us, Plate 2635 (baotest) is done Acquired signal on Plate 2425 (Legacy), but it is not done. Explored the spectro collimator mirror tilt limits. Details below. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Afternoon: ---------- The 90 degree alt fiducial did not read in either direction. The 45 degree alt fiducial did not read going up. Spectro collimation was not adjusted. Details are in the Problems section. We had the problem where the altitude brake would not release because the system thought the imager cart was not in the doghouse. We now think this problem is caused by the imager cover being set on or rolling over the wire to the sensor on the floor. Observers please be careful when stowing and retrieving the imager cover to make sure you are not hitting this wire. If you see the alt brake not releasing because of the imager cart, try wiggling the sensor wire first to see if this solves the problem. Also note that if the bolt that depresses the plunger in the sensor is extended too far, this will cause the sensor to fail just the same as if the bolt is not extended far enough. Finally, note that there are 3 states of the red light in this sensor. If the red light is off, the sensor is not functional and the wire needs to be wiggled. If the red light is on but dim, that means the sensor thinks the cart is NOT in place. If the red light is on and bright, the sensor thinks the cart IS in place. Night: ------ 01:37Z - Cart 3, plate 2635 - BAOTest Needed an FK5 to find the field. Done with a total exposure time of 5700 s. 03:55Z - Cart 4, plate 2425 - Legacy GSOGTF Poor seeing and a few clouds reduced the efficiency. We had to abort the 3rd exposure because of clouds. A total exposure time of 2400 s gave useable signal, but the plate is NOT done. ----- Note to Dan: we are still needing to use two guider flats when we goToField (but I think you already knew that). Son-of-Spectro stopped updating sometime after 00:00Z. We did a sos_stop, sos_start and a sos_redo for the current MJD and we were back in business. Skies were photometric, but we had clouds approaching from the south and fog a few miles to the east so we did not switch to imaging. Good thing, because soon the seeing blew up. David had mentioned that the spectro QA apoplots do not look right. We agree. The SoS reduction shows a drop in flux on the plots from about 5800A to 6600A, so it is not handling things well there. 06:07Z - The cloud ceiling was low enough that we thought it prudent to close. The wind gusts had also just reached closure limit. ---------- While waiting for it to clear, we worked on finding the limit to the spectro collimator actuator motion in the blueward wavelength tilt direction. The untilted collimator positions are: sp1: sp2: a 1934 5813 b 1338 5806 The different collimator motors reach their limits at: sp1: sp2: a -13255 -11301 b 43998 45044 Note that for both spectrographs, b has more range of movement that a. Presumably, this is because one side of the mirror will be tilted further away from the actuator zero point than the other - the nature of a tilt. To do a one step mechMoveColl to go to the limit of a, you would use: sp1> mechMoveColl -15188 15188 0 sp2> mechMoveColl -17114 17114 0 The wavemin and wavemax with NO tilt are: b1 r1 b2 r2 wavemin 3803.1 5766.6 3790.0 5779.8 wavemax 6173.9 9220.9 6161.4 9221.8 At the tilt limit, before focussing, wavemin and wavemax are: b1 r1 b2 r2 wavemin 3511.3 5320.4 3454.8 5273.8 wavemax 5853.2 8757.9 5790.7 8697.2 b1 was out of focus so we did a mechPiston 500 move on sp1 to bring b1 into better focus, ignoring any focus changes to r1. After b1 and b2 were in as good a focus as we could get, the wavemin and wavemax were: b1 r1 b2 r2 wavemin 3512.5 5319.8 3456.1 5273.6 wavemax 5852.7 8757.3 5790.7 8693.3 David said he would like us to go blueward of 3500A for his test. It looks like we can't quite get to 3500A on sp1, and don't get below 3455 on b2. An email was sent to David to see if we should continue with his UV response test at shakeup. ---------- The weather only got worse through the night. Humidity rose, and by the end of the night we had snow flurries. We gave it up at 12:00Z. ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End Begin End Frame ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6673 21:51Z 22:07Z 100 O 149.83 154.03 42 ignore ---=== IMAGING RUN DETAILS ===--- ---=== SKIPPY RESULTS ===--- Run Frame nFrames stars muErr muRms nuErr nuRms rot az el --------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== LTMATCH RESULTS ===--- Run Field nFields alt az nGood rowMean rowSig colMean colSig rot ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== SPECTROSCOPY DATA SUMMARY ===--- Summary Checked (y/n): y QA Procedures Done (y/n): y UT Exp Time flavor comment (S/N)^2 totals ========================================== b1 r1 b2 r2 ----- sequence 42454, plate -9999 ------- 21:44 42454 0.0 bias ----- sequence 42455, plate 2670 ------- 23:36 42455 10.0 flat 23:38 42456 2.0 arc ----- sequence 42457, plate -9999 ------- 23:48 42457 0.0 bias 23:55 42458 0.0 bias ----- sequence 42459, plate 2635 ------- 01:31 42459 0.0 bias 01:49 42460 10.0 flat 01:51 42461 2.0 arc 02:15 42462 1201.0 target 02:38 42463 1200.0 target 03:06 42464 1501.0 target 03:09 42465 10.0 flat 03:11 42466 2.0 arc 03:45 42467 1800.0 target ----- sequence 42468, plate 2425 ------- 04:01 42468 10.0 flat 04:04 42469 2.0 arc 04:28 42470 1200.0 target 04:50 42471 1200.0 target 05:21 42472 1200.0 target 08:17 42473 10.0 flat Collimator motor tilt tests 08:19 42474 2.0 arc " " 08:23 42475 2.0 arc " " 08:25 42476 3.0 arc " " 08:50 42477 10.0 flat " " 08:52 42478 2.0 arc " " 09:03 42479 10.0 flat " " 09:05 42480 2.0 arc " " 10:00 42481 10.0 flat " " 10:02 42482 2.0 arc " " 10:07 42483 10.0 flat " " 10:09 42484 2.0 arc " " 10:30 42485 10.0 flat " " 10:33 42486 2.0 arc " " ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE I ===--- Time Instrument Az Alt Rot Scale pos offset pos offset pos offset ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 01:56Z 3 2635 -0.91 0.0003 57.37 0.0027 179.21 0.0030 1.000050 04:10Z 4 2425 84.24 0.0003 34.35 0.0030 239.38 0.0019 1.000220 ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE II ===--- ---=== FOCUS LOG ===--- setmir piston Temp Wind Time Inst scale M1 M2 Foc Az Alt (C) MPH Dir filt fwhm ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 01:56Z 3 2635 1.00005 -494 1100 350 -1 57.4 0.8 24 204 - 1.3 04:10Z 4 2425 1.00022 -2173 -309 250 84 34.3 0.1 18 198 - 2 ---=== WEATHER LOG ===--- Wind Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust DIMM Sky 20:35Z 38 22 23 204 (SSW) 1614 - 21:07Z 38 22 24 188 (S) 1979 - 21:40Z 38 23 24 218 (SW) 2207 - 22:11Z 37 21 28 225 (SW) 2067 - 22:42Z 39 22 20 206 (SSW) 1640 - 23:13Z 37 17 28 214 (SW) 1674 - 23:43Z 35 18 30 209 (SSW) 1815 - 00:13Z 34 18 23 202 (SSW) 1874 - clear 00:43Z 32 18 19 208 (SSW) 2049 - clear 01:13Z 33 17 20 214 (SW) 2105 - clear 01:34Z 33 18 19 205 (SSW) 1924 - clear 02:04Z 33 18 20 209 (SSW) 1902 - clear 02:34Z 33 18 26 220 (SW) 1941 - clear 03:05Z 33 19 23 224 (SW) 1858 - clear 03:36Z 32 20 19 210 (SSW) 2128 - part cloudy 04:06Z 32 19 18 204 (SSW) 2263 - part cloudy 04:36Z 31 17 20 191 (S) 2172 - part cloudy 05:07Z 31 17 20 194 (SSW) 1816 - most cloudy 05:37Z 32 18 28 213 (SSW) 1782 - most cloudy 06:07Z 31 18 23 205 (SSW) 1632 - most cloudy 06:39Z 31 18 30 212 (SSW) 1563 - cloudy 07:10Z 30 17 25 204 (SSW) 1688 - cloudy 07:43Z 30 19 26 211 (SSW) 1566 - cloudy 08:14Z 30 19 23 213 (SSW) 1566 - cloudy 08:47Z 29 19 28 221 (SW) 1459 - cloudy 09:19Z 28 22 19 199 (SSW) 1401 - cloudy 09:50Z 26 22 21 202 (SSW) 1793 - cloudy 10:20Z 27 23 33 201 (SSW) 1206 - cloudy 10:52Z 27 24 32 206 (SSW) 1116 - cloudy 11:24Z 26 24 27 212 (SSW) 1351 - cloudy ---=== TELESCOPE STATUS ===--- 23:45Z Enclosure doors opened, fans and blowers on, louvers opened. 00:15Z Enclosure off. 06:07Z Closed enclosure.
