APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Monday February 26, 2007 (MJD 54158) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Stephanie Snedden Dan Oravetz Suvrath Mahadevan (UF) Scott Fleming (UF) ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- ET Science! ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- Note to Jon: endNight failed at the ir cam transfer. See the log. Seven ET exposures were done and six plates observed. A few problems. See the log. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Afternoon: ---------- Afternoon checkout went smoothly. Received benign error message in telrun: "too few replies on port LTA11:" Emailed Russell regarding this issue and will try to remedy in the afternoon by rebooting the guider. ET Night 2: ----------- 00:30Z - Opened enclosure doors and began ventilation. 01:51Z - Started with Cartridge 6, plate E8016. GSOGTF Two 50-minute exposures with the iodine cell in place (2Xdata). 03:50Z - Cartridge 9, plate E8017. GSOGTF One 50-minute exposure with the iodine cell in place (data). 04:25Z - We had a repeat of last month's problem with the manipulator arm's PLC unit. Once again the arm refused to let us move up or down, and gave us the "limit beeps" whenever we tried to move either up or down. We power cycled the PLC and that seemed to fix the problem ... for now. 04:54Z - Cartridge 3, plate E8024. GSOGTF One 50-minute exposure with the iodine cell in place (data). 06:02Z While slewing to the field for Cartridge 5, rotator aborted several times and then both altitude and rotator aborted. Multiple attempts at initializing the axes failed. There were no obvious interlocks tripped. We rebooted the MCP, reset the amplifiers and tried again ... still no response. As a last ditch effort before calling engineers, we opened the doghouse door to look at the cart interlock and it was okay. We closed the doghouse door and then ... SPOOF ... amplifiers worked and we had control of the axes. We did get an MCP error message: "DID48 interrupt with no set time (2007-02-27 06:13:56Z sdssmcp) (DID48 interrupt with no set time (2007-02-27 06:13:56Z sdssmcp): 2007-02-27 06:14:14Z )" but this could have been related to the MCP reboot. 06:44Z - Cartridge 5, plate E8025. Needed an fk5. One 50-minute exposure with the iodine cell in place (data). 07:46Z - Cartridge 1, plate E8026. GSOGTF One 50-minute exposure with the iodine cell in place (data). One 50-minute exposure with the iodine cell out (template). 09:57Z - Cartridge 8, plate E8021. Used an fk5 with accidentally cleared offsets. One 50-minute exposure with the iodine cell in place (data). One 50-minute exposure with the iodine cell out (template). 12:04Z - During the cartridge change procedure for switching out Cartridge 8 for the final cartridge of the night, Cartridge 7, the Stop button was thrown too soon before the rotator had reached 0. As a result, Cartridge 8 was lowered onto the cart at an angle and one corner was resting atop one of the guiding posts causing the Cartridge to be tilted. In this configuration, Cartridge 8 could not be lowered onto the cart nor mounted back onto the telescope. We proceeded to unbolt the post and the Cartridge came to a gentle landing and sat flat on the cart. We re-mounted Cartridge 8, reset the MCP card (which had become unresponsive, apparently unrelated to the cartridge problem) and rotated to 0. The slithead latches were cycled and appear to work as they should. The post was re-bolted to the cart plate and everything seems to perform as it should. As a precautionary note, we let the engineers know and suggested that the integrity of the slithead latches be verified. The test (not CVS ci'd yet) version of iop with the new ir camera URL failed during endNight because of ssh agent forwarding problems, apparently. Here is what we got back from endNight: Should the PT data for 54158 be processed by mtPipe? n Transfering of ircam images to /data/mt/54158/ircam The authenticity of host 'irsc.apo.nmsu.edu (192.41.211.39)' can't be established.
