APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Saturday August 18, 2007 (MJD 54331) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Swing: ----- Steph Snedden Audrey Simmons Observers: --------- Dmitry Bizyaev Dan Oravetz ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Science! ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- We lost the first part of the night to clouds and very brief rain. Spectroscopy. Finished Cartridge 6, plate 1963. Got good signal on Cartridge 8, plate 2801 (we actually observed it twice because a Pre-Calib. was not taken during the first sequence) and accumulated enough (S/N)^2 to declare it done, but we need an executive decision to make the final call. See "log" section. Got good signal on Cartridge 7, plate 2311, but did not declare it done because of confusion with the criteria listed in the documentation for declaring SEGUE bright plates done. See "log" section. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Evening: ------- Checkout went smoothly. No problems to report. Spectro focus set for 14 C using Cartridge 8. 01:50Z - Began ventilation. Doors opened halfway, louvers and fans on. Night: ----- 03:55Z - Very brief, very light rain. Closed doors most of the way. 05:10Z - Sky is clearing. Opened doors all the way. 06:02Z - Enclosure off. 06:24Z - Cartridge 6, plate 1963, seguefaint102 Needed an fk5 to acquire the field. 06:37Z - Pre-Calib. 06:44Z - 20-minute exposure. 07:08Z - Post-Calib. Seeing: 1.1" - 1.3". SoS warned of a Whopping fiber # 59. FINISHED THIS PLATE. 07:19Z - Cartridge 8, plate 2801, segue166 Guide stars found on gotoField. 07:26Z - 15-minute exposure. 07:44Z - 15-minute exposure. 08:02Z - Post-Calib. Seeing: 1.1 - 1.2". SoS recommended Post-calibs which were taken anyway. We forgot to take a Pre-Calib. with the above two science exposures for Cartridge 8, but the signal in these exposures is excellent in b2 (more than enough to declare the plate done when combined with last night's data). We didn't realize the Pre-Calib. hadn't been taken until after observations started on Cartridge 7. We decided to continue observing Cartridge 7 instead of switching to put Cartridge 8 back on because: 1) both are priority-2 SEUGE-bright plates; 2) signal had already been accumulated on Cartridge 7 last night and we naturally wanted to try to finish it; 3) Cartridge 7 expired well before Cartridge 8 (Cartridge 8 was available until twilight). After observing Cartridge 7 until its expiration, we re-mounted Cartridge 8 and tried to "legally" finish it (i.e. with a Pre-Calib. this time) before the night's end because there were no other cartridges available and we had the time left to try. Towards the bottom of this section is the summary of observations and the second attempt at Cartridge 8. Disregarding the observations made without the Pre-Calib., the observations from last night combined with the observations made during the second attempt at finishing Cartridge 8 (those listed below) yield b1=12.9, r1=25.1, b2=21.9, and r2=23.4 as the summed (S/N)^2 values. So, it certainly won't take much to finish this plate on the next MJD (54332), weather permitting. Of course, if the data taken without the Pre-Calib. are okay, then this cartridge can certainly be declared done. Nonetheless, we will leave this plate plugged until the no-Pre-Calib.-data is formally analyzed, at which point a decision can be made as to whether the plate is satisfactorilly completed, or if it needs to be observed again to finish it. Sorry for the inconvenience. 08:13Z - Cartridge 7, plate 2311, segue126 Guide stars found on gotoField. 08:21Z - 15-minute exposure. 08:40Z - Pre-Calib. 08:52Z - 15-minute exposure. 09:10Z - 20-minute exposure. 09:33Z - 20-minute exposure. 09:56Z - 20-minute exposure. Seeing: 1.1" - 1.3". SoS warned of Bad sky residuals, Whopping fibers, and Scattered light warnings. The above exposures yield the following summed (S/N)^2 values for Cartridge 7: 16.8=b1, 4.5=r1, 16.6=b2, 21.4=r2. Since both b1 and b2 are greater than 15.0, our first thought was that this cartridge could be declared done, but each one of the exposures had a (S/N)^2 value < 2.0 in r1 leading us to the following confusion. The documentation under "Spectroscopy: Deciding if a plate is done" lists the usual criteria for declaring a SEGUE bright done: SEGUE (The bright plates) Summed (S/N)^2 > 15 in BOTH b1 and b2 **OR** Summed (S/N)^2 > 30 in either b1 OR b2 but, it also discusses what to do if a camera is < 2.0 for (S/N)^2: "(S/N)^2 < 2 on an individual exposure often happens with the bright plates, even under good observing conditions. It is permitted if other cameras are getting (S/N)^2 > 2. In that case, you would use the summed (S/N)^2 > 30 in b1 or b2." We ran into confusion here because it doesn't specify whether or not it makes a difference as to which camera is < 2. In the case tonight, only r1 was < 2 and that was for every exposure. So if it doesn't matter that r1 was < 2 each time because we were able to accumulate b1 and b2 > 15.0, then this plate can be considered done. Our hunch is that the documentation is saying that the if one of the blue cameras is < 2, then resort to the (S/N)^2 > 30 criterion, because the blue camera values are the deciding factor under the conditions where there are no cameras < 2, but we're not sure and would like clarification on this subject. Including the plate that will be plugged for MJD 54332 (Cart 6, plate 2624), there are three priority-4 SEGUE-faint plates that do not yet have signal that will tie up most of the night (not to mention imaging possibilities), so we figured rather than unplug this plate at the chance that it really does matter that r1 < 2, we would just wait for clarification. Again, sorry for any inconvenience. 10:32Z - Cartridge 8, plate 2801, segue166 Guide stars found on gotoField. 10:37Z - Pre-Calib. 10:43Z - 15-minute exposure. 11:02Z - 20-minute exposure. 11:25Z - Post-Calib. Seeing: 1.1" - 1.4". SoS warned of Bad sky residuals, Whopping fibers, and Scattered light warnings. 11:50Z - Enclosure on, doors and louvers closed, fans off. 12:29Z - endNight rejoiced. ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End Begin End Frame ------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== IMAGING RUN DETAILS ===--- ---=== SKIPPY RESULTS ===--- Run Frame nFrames stars muErr muRms nuErr nuRms rot az el --------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== LTMATCH RESULTS ===--- Run Field nFields alt az nGood rowMean rowSig colMean colSig rot ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== SPECTROSCOPY DATA SUMMARY ===--- Summary Checked (y/n): y QA Procedures Done (y/n): y UT Exp Time flavor comment (S/N)^2 totals ========================================== b1 r1 b2 r2 ----- sequence 45990, plate -9999 ------- 00:09 45990 0.0 bias 00:42 45991 0.0 bias ----- sequence 45992, plate 2801 ------- 00:48 45992 10.0 flat 00:51 45993 2.0 arc 00:55 45994 2.0 arc 00:57 45995 2.0 arc 01:24 45996 3.0 arc 01:26 45997 3.0 arc ----- sequence 45998, plate 1963 ------- 59.7 54.9 66.7 53.4 06:40 45998 10.0 flat 06:43 45999 2.0 arc 07:07 46000 1201.0 target 07:11 46001 10.0 flat 07:13 46002 2.0 arc ----- sequence 46003, plate 2801 ------- (NO PRE-CAL TAKEN THIS SEQUENCE) 07:43 46003 901.0 target 08:01 46004 903.0 target 08:04 46005 10.0 flat 08:07 46006 2.0 arc ----- sequence 46007, plate 2311 ------- 16.8 4.5 16.6 21.4 08:38 46007 901.0 target 08:42 46008 10.0 flat 08:45 46009 2.0 arc 09:09 46010 901.0 target 09:32 46011 1201.0 target 09:55 46012 1200.0 target 10:18 46013 1201.0 target 10:23 46014 10.0 flat 10:25 46015 2.0 arc ----- sequence 46016, plate 2801 ------- 12.9 25.1 21.9 23.4 (W/ PRE-CAL) 10:39 46016 10.0 flat 10:42 46017 2.0 arc 11:01 46018 901.0 target 11:24 46019 1200.0 target 11:27 46020 10.0 flat 11:30 46021 2.0 arc ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE I ===--- Time Instrument Az Alt Rot Scale pos offset pos offset pos offset ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 07:00Z 6 1963 -5.82 0.0004 56.92 0.0037 175.07 0.0279 1.000330 07:26Z 8 2801 79.79 -0.0001 64.17 0.0042 245.89 0.0279 1.000370 08:22Z 7 2311 14.04 -0.0006 46.36 0.0029 191.92 0.0279 1.000460 09:36Z 7 2311 -12.50 -0.0004 46.58 0.0032 169.33 0.0175 1.000460 10:44Z 8 2801 287.16 -0.0010 69.81 0.0029 117.56 0.0282 1.000360 ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE II ===--- ---=== FOCUS LOG ===--- setmir piston Temp Wind Time Inst scale M1 M2 Foc Az Alt (C) MPH Dir filt fwhm ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 07:00Z 6 1963 1.00033 -3259 -1847 -310 -6 56.9 17.7 8 272 ---- 1.2" 07:26Z 8 2801 1.00037 -3654 -2192 -310 80 64.2 17.5 10 287 ---- 1.2" 08:22Z 7 2311 1.00046 -4543 -2917 -350 14 46.4 17.4 7 267 ---- 1.3" 09:36Z 7 2311 1.00046 -4543 -2898 -330 -12 46.6 17.3 8 268 ---- 1.2" 10:44Z 8 2801 1.00036 -3552 -2131 -320 287 69.8 16.5 9 213 ---- 1.1" ---=== WEATHER LOG ===--- Wind Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust DIMM Sky 00:11Z 70 48 7 261 (W) 732 - Mostly cloudy 00:41Z 65 46 4 269 (W) 787 - Mostly cloudy 01:14Z 65 47 7 268 (W) 719 - Mostly cloudy 01:47Z 64 49 5 264 (W) 669 - Mostly cloudy 02:19Z 62 50 1 262 (W) 1524 - Mostly cloudy 02:52Z 63 49 5 266 (W) 1444 - Clouds 03:24Z 63 49 3 262 (W) 1290 - Clouds 03:56Z 64 49 5 196 (SSW) 1201 - Clouds 04:28Z 63 48 3 248 (WSW) 926 - Clouds 05:00Z 65 47 8 262 (W) 826 - Partly cloudy 05:32Z 64 47 6 274 (W) 827 - Partly cloudy 06:04Z 64 47 9 267 (W) 891 - Mostly clear 06:35Z 64 47 8 277 (W) 850 - Mostly clear 07:06Z 63 47 5 268 (W) 789 - Clear 07:36Z 63 47 7 271 (W) 827 - Clear 08:07Z 63 47 7 268 (W) 867 - Clear 08:39Z 63 47 6 267 (W) 838 - Clear 09:10Z 63 47 7 264 (W) 833 - Clear 09:40Z 63 47 8 266 (W) 913 - Clear 10:11Z 62 47 8 244 (WSW) 1075 - Clear 10:41Z 61 46 9 214 (SW) 1269 - Clear 11:14Z 61 45 8 233 (SW) 1086 - Clear 11:46Z 60 47 9 235 (SW) 1070 - Clear 12:17Z 60 47 8 257 (WSW) 1010 - Clear 12:50Z 62 45 8 274 (W) 853 - Clear 13:22Z 62 45 6 269 (W) 820 - Clear ---=== TELESCOPE STATUS ===--- 01:50Z - Began ventilation.
