APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Friday October 26, 2007 (MJD 54400) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Shannon Watters Steph Snedden Audrey Simmons (swing) Dan Oravetz Jon Brinkmann (RAID wrangler) Fritz Stauffer (RAID wrangler) Gretchen VanDoren (film crew handler) Kris Koenig (Interstellar Studios) Anita Berkow (Interstellar Studios) Krista Shelby (Interstellar Studios) ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- SEGUEScience! with a little shakedown thrown in. ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- We observed five SEGUE plates under bright moon. Brian, please check S/N and let the pluggers know ASAP if any need to be replugged. However, we are running out of middle of night plates, so we can also continue to reobserve the same plates for that time of night and get extra signal. The pluggers need to know before 2:30 if they are to get new plates ready for tonight. The west slithead latch responded a little slower than the east latch on all cartridges tonight, as reported by the LED on the control panel. Jon, the new TCC is putting the wrong positions in the fits RA and DEC header keywords, but the correct values for RADEG and DECDEG. Details are in the problems section. This may mean Brian will have to rewrite the RA and Dec values in tonight's headers, but he ought to be able to use the RADEG and DECDEG values. We should roll back to the old TCC, so please contact Shannon in the afternoon with instructions. We MUST roll back before we resume SN imaging. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Afternoon: --------- We had two afternoon delays: 1 - Jon and Fritz were trying to install the RAID on sdsshost2. They were unsuccessful, since the old kernel didn't recognize the RAID card. They will try to get drivers that will work, but not until Monday. We reverted back to running 'host2 from the older drive. 2 - There was a film crew here to shoot the SDSS telescope for a documentary for the International Year of the Telescope. This did not actually delay opening, however. We did not do a complete focus check (hartmann exposures) of the spectrographs because of both of the above delays, but did take a flat and arc to verify that focus was good. Night: ----- We opened at sunset for SEGUE bright time spectroscopy 00:53Z - Cartridge 3, plate 2309 - SEGUE bright Needed an FK5 in twilight. Seeing was good (started at 1.4, but then went subarcsec) Took two 15 minute exposures on this plate plus a pre- nad post-cal. According to Brian, we will need two more exposures, so this plate is NOT done. 02:19Z - Cartridge 5, plate 2815 - SEGUE bright GSOGTF. Seeing was good (around 1 asec FWHM) This is a high-priority plate, according to Brian. We took six exposures totaling 95 minutes, and will wait for Brian's feedback as to how many more (if any) it will need. Pre-, mid- and post-cals also taken. 04:43Z - Cartridge 4, plate 2816 - SEGUE bright GSOGTF. Seeing degraded to 1.7 asec FWHM. Six 15-minute exposures were taken, with pre-, mid- and post-cals. We took more exposures on this plate than the four that Brian estimated we would need, because there were no other cartridges available to observe until about 08:00Z. This also leaves us with a gap for Saturday night, since there are no other bright plates that cover this time range. We have a choice of acquiring extra signal on this plate or replugging with a slightly earlier plate; 2625 and having a large gap when nothing is available. We leave that choice to Brian. Note that we actually took a seventh exposure, however, the flat field lamps were accidentally turned on before the science exposure ended, when a post-cal started prematurely. The exposure was labeled "bad" and we took a second post-cal. We were surprised that SOP let us start the post-cal before the science readout ended. 07:28Z - Cartridge 8, plate 2682 - SEGUE bright GSOGTF. Seeing a little better at 1.5 asec FWHM. We took extra time to do a focus sweep since the UTmin is actually 08:17Z, so we had plenty of time. We still started science exposures early at 07:47Z. We took four 15-minute exposures with pre- and post-cals. 09:13Z - Cartridge 7, plate 2713 - SEGUE bright GSOGTF. Seeing varied from 1.2 to 1.7 asec FWHM. Seven fifteen minute exposures were taken, with pre-, mid- and post-cals. endNight rejoiced ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End Begin End Frame ------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== IMAGING RUN DETAILS ===--- ---=== SKIPPY RESULTS ===--- Run Frame nFrames stars muErr muRms nuErr nuRms rot az el --------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== LTMATCH RESULTS ===--- Run Field nFields alt az nGood rowMean rowSig colMean colSig rot ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== SPECTROSCOPY DATA SUMMARY ===--- Summary Checked (y/n):y QA Procedures Done (y/n):QATopTen & some images checked UT Exp Time flavor comment (S/N)^2 totals ========================================== b1 r1 b2 r2 ----- sequence 46925, plate -9999 ------- 23:40 46925 0.0 bias ----- sequence 46926, plate 0 ------- 23:47 46926 0.0 bias ----- sequence 46927, plate -9999 ------- 23:50 46927 0.0 bias ----- sequence 46928, plate 2713 ------- 23:53 46928 10.0 flat focus check 23:56 46929 2.0 arc ----- sequence 46930, plate 2309 ------- 01:22 46930 10.0 flat 01:25 46931 2.0 arc 01:44 46932 900.0 target 02:02 46933 900.0 target 02:06 46934 10.0 flat 02:08 46935 2.0 arc ----- sequence 46936, plate 2815 ------- 02:25 46936 10.0 flat 02:28 46937 2.0 arc 02:46 46938 901.0 target 03:04 46939 901.0 target 03:22 46940 900.0 target 03:40 46941 901.0 target 03:44 46942 10.0 flat 03:46 46943 2.0 arc 04:05 46944 900.0 target 04:28 46945 1201.0 target 04:31 46946 10.0 flat 04:34 46947 2.0 arc ----- sequence 46948, plate 2816 ------- 04:48 46948 10.0 flat 04:51 46949 2.0 arc 05:10 46950 901.0 target 05:27 46951 901.0 target 05:45 46952 901.0 target 06:03 46953 900.0 target 06:07 46954 10.0 flat 06:09 46955 2.0 arc 06:28 46956 900.0 target 06:46 46957 901.0 target 07:05 46958 10.0 flat actually a science + flat (see log) 07:08 46959 2.0 arc 07:11 46960 10.0 flat 07:14 46961 2.0 arc ----- sequence 46962, plate 2682 ------- 07:42 46962 10.0 flat 07:45 46963 2.0 arc 08:04 46964 900.0 target 08:22 46965 901.0 target 08:40 46966 901.0 target 08:58 46967 901.0 target 09:01 46968 10.0 flat 09:03 46969 2.0 arc ----- sequence 46970, plate 2713 ------- 09:23 46970 10.0 flat 09:25 46971 2.0 arc 09:45 46972 901.0 target 10:03 46973 901.0 target 10:20 46974 900.0 target 10:24 46975 10.0 flat 10:27 46976 2.0 arc 10:46 46977 900.0 target 11:03 46978 901.0 target 11:21 46979 900.0 target 11:39 46980 901.0 target 11:42 46981 10.0 flat 11:44 46982 2.0 arc ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE I ===--- Time Instrument Az Alt Rot Scale pos offset pos offset pos offset ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 01:27Z 3 2309 30.34 0.0063 43.95 0.0006 205.38 0.0351 1.000360 02:49Z 5 2815 -34.31 0.0045 54.96 -0.0016 151.61 0.0090 0.999990 04:53Z 4 2816 31.12 0.0038 42.66 -0.0007 206.12 0.0300 1.000010 07:40Z 8 2682 112.76 0.0050 43.94 0.0014 -101.93 0.0173 1.000450 09:27Z 7 2713 76.03 0.0054 48.71 0.0007 238.01 0.0210 1.000320 ---=== FOCUS LOG ===--- setmir piston Temp Wind Time Inst scale M1 M2 Foc Az Alt (C) MPH Dir filt fwhm ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 01:27Z 3 2309 1.00036 -3555 -1965 -225 30 43.9 10.8 3 323 -- 1.4 02:49Z 5 2815 0.99999 99 1022 -225 -34 55.0 10.4 2 290 -- 1.1 04:53Z 4 2816 1.00001 -99 875 -250 31 42.7 10.4 1 291 -- 1.7 07:40Z 8 2682 1.00045 -4444 -2776 -300 113 43.9 10.3 1 309 -- 1.5 09:27Z 7 2713 1.00032 -3160 -1680 -250 76 48.7 9.9 7 356 -- 1.8 ---=== WEATHER LOG ===--- Wind Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust DIMM Sky 23:26Z 58 17 2 306 (NW) 405 - clear 23:56Z 54 15 4 264 (W) 470 - ' 00:26Z 50 15 4 260 (W) 404 - ' 00:57Z 49 15 1 203 (SSW) 391 - ' 01:27Z 51 12 2 324 (NW) 372 - ' 01:58Z 51 11 7 314 (NW) 467 - ' 02:28Z 50 12 2 260 (W) 486 - ' 02:59Z 50 11 2 324 (NW) 475 - ' 03:31Z 50 10 3 324 (NW) 431 - ' 04:03Z 50 10 1 321 (NW) 452 - ' 04:34Z 50 13 0 202 (SSW) 432 - ' 05:05Z 50 15 6 352 (NNW) 416 - ' 05:36Z 50 13 3 63 (ENE) 403 - ' 06:08Z 50 13 3 10 (N) 404 - ' 06:38Z 49 13 4 354 (NNW) 391 - ' 07:08Z 50 13 2 291 (WNW) 427 - ' 07:40Z 50 13 1 308 (NW) 527 - ' 08:10Z 50 12 1 348 (NNW) 550 - ' 08:40Z 49 10 5 70 (ENE) 452 - ' 09:11Z 49 12 4 5 (N) 430 - ' 09:41Z 49 13 3 26 (NNE) 420 - ' 10:11Z 49 14 7 358 (NNW) 433 - ' 10:41Z 49 14 7 5 (N) 422 - ' 11:12Z 49 10 10 59 (ENE) 392 - ' 11:45Z 48 6 11 87 (E) 354 - ' ---=== TELESCOPE STATUS ===--- 00:00Z - Started enclosure ventilation 00:21Z - opened enclosure 12:10Z - closed enclosure.
